These cultural differences urge us to conduct a
survey to compare Vietnamese gift giving culture
to British gift giving culture. (Concentrating on
some popular occasions of both countries such as
wedding, funeral, anniversary and business, we
found out the following similarities and differences
which go along with their reasons).
Gift giving is defined as the “voluntary “voluntary
transfer from one person to another without transfer from one person to another without
compensation”compensation”.
(McGrath, 1995)
Similarities
1. Facial expression,
hand gesture and
presentation of the
gifts are some
common aspects in
non - verbal
communication
between two
cultures. First, not
only gift giver but
also receiver look
very happy and has
smile on their face.
In British
In Viet Nam
2. The most typical point is that when
giving gifts or receiving gifts, people in
two cultures often use both hands.
3. In both countries, people always wrap
the gift in bright, colorful and tissue paper.
Trying to make gifts more charming and
nicer is always one of the major purposes
of the giver.
Differences
The British tend to
receive at once.
1. In verbal communication, the first
difference is that when being
given a gift
while the
Vietnamese may
refuse on the first
offer, even on the
second and on the
third one.
2. There are some differences in the
time when people open gifts
Normally, the British
choose to open
presents as soon as it
is given to them.
Nonetheless,
the Vietnamese
do not do this
until all the
guests come
back home
3. Types of gifts also vary across culture
In Viet Nam, the most common
gift is money.
The Vietnamese always buy very
expensive gifts because they
think the more expensive gifts
are, the more pleasant the
receivers will feel.
The British, by contrast,
choose meaningful gifts
instead of the expensive
gifts. The expense of gifts is
not as important as the
meaning behind them.
ConclusionConclusion
We can say the gift giving style of British and
Vietnamese people have some similarities.
However, there are also some differences
because of two different cultures.
