1882 Vande Mataram from Anand Math written by BankimChandra Chatterji enjoys the status of the National Song of India . Anand Math was published in 1882 Written in Bengali and Sanskrit

The beautiful English rendering of this song was given by Sri Aurobindo Mother, I salute thee! Rich with thy hurrying streams, bright with orchard gleams, Cool with thy winds of delight, Dark fields waving Mother of might, Mother free. Glory of moonlight dreams, Over thy branches and lordly streams, Clad in thy blossoming trees, Mother, giver of ease Laughing low and sweet! Mother I kiss thy feet, Speaker sweet and low! Mother, to thee I salute.

1896 It was first sung from a political platform at the 1896 session of the  Indian National Congress . Rahimatullah M sayani was the President of that session

1905 First movies made by Heera Lal Sain ends with the Vande Mataram Smt. Sarla Devi Chaudharani , niece of Dr. Ravindranath Tagore sang  Vande Mataram  in 1905 Congress Convention, Banaras, despite ban on its singing by the British Government.

1906 In March 1906, the Barisal Parishad was created and a Provincial Conference of Bengal held at Barisal. The delegates defied the ban imposed by the government and took out a massive procession through the city chanting Vande Mataram . They braved lathi -charges shedding blood and the conference came to an abrupt end.

1907 Bande Mataram – weekly edition by Sri Aurobindo

1907 Overseas in 1907, at Stuttgart in Germany, the convention of international socialist congress was to start. Many respectful leaders, Pt. Shyamaji Verma ,  Madam Cama , Vinayak Sawarkar  were to attend it. To pass a resolution on the India's freedom, Madam Cama initiated the speech by flouting the 1st modern India flag with Vande Mataram inscribed on it, at the centre, in Devanagari script It was for  the first time  that a flag of proposed independent India was hoisted.

1911 That Janagan Gana Mann written by Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore in 1911 and first sung on the second day of annual session of Indian National Congress held at Calcutta on 27 December 1911, on the first day of the session Vande Mataram having been sung as usual .

1937 . In 1937, the Congress working Committee appointed a sub committee of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose and Acharya Narendra Dev as members to review the eligibility of  Vande Mataram to the status of national anthem. The committee was to take the guidance of Rabindra Nath Tagore. Finally, the Congress Working Committee ordered the same year that only first two stanzas of it should be sung. Later in Haripur Congress convention in 1938 for the first time only first two stanzas of  Vande Mataram  were sung.

Subhashchandra Bose  had adopted this song for his Indian National Army. It was broadcast in their programs from  Singapore radio station.

1939 On 1 July 1939, in  Harijan , he published an essay in which he said that " Vande Mataram was a powerful battle cry" and that he himself "as a lad" was enthralled by it: "It never occurred to me that it was a Hindu song or meant only for Hindus. Unfortunately, now we have fallen on evil days. All that was pure gold has become bsae metal today. In such times, it is wisdom not to market pure gold and let it be sold as base metal. I would not risk a single quarrel over singing Vande Mataram at a mixed gathering. It will never suffer from disuse. It is enthroned in the hearts of millions."

First day of the Constituent Assembly

Netaji -Liberating “Mother India” Bharat Mata Rajendra Prasad (3 Dec1884 -28 Feb 1963), who was presiding the  Constituent Assembly  on 24 January 1950, made the following statement which was also adopted as the final decision on the issue: ...The composition consisting of words and music known as Jana Gana Mana is the National Anthem of India, subject to such alterations as the Government may authorise as occasion arises, and the song Vande Mataram , which has played a historic part in the struggle for Indian freedom, shall be honored equally with Jana Gana Mana and shall have equal status with it. (Applause) I hope this will satisfy members.  (Constituent Assembly of India, Vol. XII, 24-1-1950) That  Bande Mataram   should ever have been challenged on the ground that it was too Hindu and not secular enough for a country where there were some millions of Muslims is a sad symptom of national decadence.--- Amal Kiran “Mother India” issue of 14 October 1950
