INTRODUCTION
•This Project connectsVaranasi canttwith the Godowlia.
•A joint venture of Vishwa Samudra Engineering (VSE) with Bartholet Maschinenbau AG, a Switzerland
based ropeway equipment supplier is executing this project.
•Operation and Maintenance of the ropeway project under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
•The total cost of the pilot project is estimated to be Rs. 424 crores which will be divided into the Central
and State Governments in the 80:20 ratio.
•The ropeway will have 5 major stations –Varanasi Cantt, Kashi Vidyapith, Rath Yatra, Girja Ghar, and
Godowlia.
3

DESIGN AND STRUCTURE
•The connectivity project has been designed with a maximum capacity to carry 3,000 passengers per hour per
direction (PPHPD).
•It can carry a passenger load of about 96,000 passengers per day in both directions.
•Around 153 gondolas or cabins will be deployed on this stretch, and each gondola can carry ten passengers.
•A total of 30 towers will be built for the ropeway, and the height of the towers will vary from 10 metresto 55 metres.
4

CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES
•The construction of the cable car system requires the installation of several towers and cables, which could affect the natural
beauty of the river Ganges.
•The construction of the cable car system could require the acquisition of land and relocation of residents, which could lead to
social unrest.
•The project also has the potential to disrupt the ecological balance of the river and its surrounding areas, which could have
long-term consequences.
•Due to the construction work noise pollution also occur.
5

IMPACT
•Reduced traffic congestion:The ropeway will provide an alternative mode of transportation, reducing the number of vehicles
on the road and alleviating traffic congestion.
•Enhanced connectivity:The ropeway will connect Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station to other parts of the city, making it
easier for people to travel and explore the city's attractions.
•Boost to tourism: The ropeway will offer a unique and scenic way for tourists to experience the city, taking them over the
Ghats and offering breathtaking views of the Ganges.
•Economic benefits:The ropeway project is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate local economic
growth.
•Environmental benefits: The ropeway will be an eco-friendly mode of transportation, reducing carbon emissions and
contributing to a cleaner environment.
6
