Variables
Variable is any characteristic of an individual. It can take on different values for different individuals
Quantitative Discrete Continuous Qualitative Ordinal Categorical Types of Variables Variables
Quantitative Variables “A variable that quantifies an element of a population.” Numeric value that it makes sense to do arithmetic operations (+, -, x, /) Finding an arithmetic “average” makes sense EX: H eight Age Income Test Scores
Two Types of Quantitative Variables It can assume an uncountable number of values, i.e. can assume any value along a line interval, including every possible value between any two values. Discrete Variables Continuous Variables
Qualitative Variables “A variable that categorizes or describes an element of a population .” Arithmetic operations are not meaningful . Ex: Gender Martial Status Weather
Two Types of Qualitative Variables Ordinal Variables Nominal Variables It incorporates an ordered position, or ranking. It categorizes (or describes, or names) an element of a population.
