RECREATION AND
LEISURE
MODULE 1-FOUNDATION OF RECREATIONAND LEISURE

Recreation
Recreation often refers to public agencies that provide facilities like parks, playgrounds, aquatic
centers, sports fields, and community centers.
These facilities are available in numerous cities, towns, counties, and park districts.
People may see these facilities as:
An outlet for the youth.
A way to achieve family togetherness.
A space for pursuing hobbies, sports, or social activities.
A place for growth and development for people of all ages.

Recreation
Recreation can also be found in senior centers, golden age clubs, sheltered workshops for
people with cognitive disabilities, or physical rehabilitation centers.
Some people prefer recreational travel by trailer, motorcoach, airplane, train, or cruise ship.
The travel and tourism industry has seen significant expansion, with travel clubs becoming
increasingly popular.
Some airlines focus on short trips through extended travel.
Disney introduced a family-focused line of cruise ships, expanding travel and tourism options.
Resort destinations like Vail, Orlando, and Las Vegas have enhanced tourism with new services,
lodging, and a growing number of timeshares.

Recreation
For younger generations, recreation and leisure have evolved to emphasize adventure, risk,
excitement, and fulfillment.
Technology has become a central part of recreation, with activities like internet-based games,
social networking, music sharing, and instant messaging.
Recreation may range from sedentary activities, such as using a computer, to extreme sports,
such as skateboarding on massive ramps.
The X-Games, promoted by ESPN, have helped define extreme sports culture, including activities
like inline skating, BMX racing, snowboarding, surfing, streetball, and motor cycling.
Participation in these activities can be as a player, spectator, or through video games.

Recreation
Environmentalists focus on the impact of traditional and emerging outdoor recreational
activities on natural surroundings like forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes
The environmental movement now includes a growing global awareness of these impacts.
Recreation and leisure are important forms of human experience, contributing to economic
development and government responsibility.
These concepts are not new; recreation and leisure have fascinated humans since ancient times,
including during the golden age of Athens.
Forms of play have been either condemned and suppressed or highly valued and encouraged,
depending on the society.

There is now widespread acceptance of the value of play, recreation, and leisure.
Governments at all levels in the U.S. have taken responsibility for providing or supporting leisure
opportunities through recreation and park systems, tourism support, and sport facilities.
Nonprofits and various commercial enterprises also offer recreational opportunities and
experiences.
Over the past two decades, the range of recreation and leisure opportunities has significantly
expanded.

Diversity in Participation
Recreation is often thought of as sports, games, or social activities, but it encompasses a wide
range of leisure pursuits.
These include travel and tourism, cultural entertainment, participation in the arts, hobbies,
social clubs, nature activities (e.g., camping, hunting, fishing), special events, and fitness
activities.
Activities considered nontraditional 10 years ago have now become mainstream.
Recreation opportunities have expanded dramatically in the past 10–30 years, in ways that were
once unimaginable.

Diversity in Participation
Recreation can be enjoyed with large groups or as a solitary experience.
It can be physically demanding or primarily a mental activity.
Participation may range from a lifetime commitment to a single, isolated experience.
The diversity of recreational activities can be viewed in three dimensions:
Horizontal plane: The variety of different recreational activities and experiences.
Vertical plane: The depth or intensity of participation.
Third plane: The complexity of why people participate (psychological), who they participate with
(social), the time spent (free vs. obligated time), and the economic costs.

Why we should Study Recreation
and Leisure

The Importance and Impact of Recreational
Activities in the Educational Curriculum
“All Work and no Play make Jack a dull boy”goes a popular saying.

The Importance and Impact of Recreational
Activities in the Educational Curriculum
•Students are more enthusiastic to learn in outdoor learning activities as compared to traditional
indoor setting and also more motivated. They also develop a better attitude towards the
environment and more responsible behavior
•It helps in building communication skills and team building as students have to work in groups to
solve problems. There will be more discussions of ideas and feedbacks and helps students to
resolve conflict among themselves
•It also helps in boosting memory as there is more practical experience and the information can
be soaked up wholly by the brain in a more fresh and fascinating environment

The Importance and Impact of Recreational
Activities in the Educational Curriculum
•It also helps in moral development as students get the opportunity to undertake leadership,
question actions and regulations and accept responsibility for their own behavior.
•Enhances peer relationships and interpersonal skills. Students can also excel in areas other than
academics where they have an interest. Recreational activities can give a chance to discover
talents other than academic excellence which can later help one in the career and life as a
whole.

DIFFERENT MOTIVATORS FOR LEISURE &
RECREATION
1. Being with others reduces loneliness -Many people nowadays find their primary social
connections and interpersonal relationship outside of work hours, in voluntary group
associations.
2. Social norms -Participants must learn to accept and contribute to their social growth in
various sorts of recreation groups and programs, which impose distinct sets of social norms,
roles, and connections.
3. Social status -Going back in time, older societies based their leisure and recreational
activities on their social rank. Adult social groups, too, reflect on their social status, especially in
modern times.

RECREATION
3. Psychological motivators Recreational activities are frequently viewed as a source of
excitement and challenge, as well as means of relaxation and getaway, stress relief, and
balancing work and play. These psychological motivators help a person’s mental well-being
1. Sense of adventure, excitement, and challenges -Today a lot of recreational participation is
driven by a desire for thrills, and challenges, especially in outdoor activities like skiing, mountain
climbing, and hang gliding, as well as vigorous highly competitive team sports.
2. Stress management-Recreation’s utility in stress reduction is closely connected to value. Dr.
Hans Selye described stress as the body’s general reaction to any excessive demand placed on it,
such as threats, physical disease, employment pressure, or harsh environmental conditions.
Many people suffer from pain, heart disease, sleep deprivation, extreme weariness, and
depression as a result of the increasing amount of stress in modern life. –
Visiting spas, participating in company outings, and traveling are some recreational activities
that help manage stress.

emotional control and indicators of emotional health. Emotionally healthy people can cope with
life’s stresses, have healthy relationships, and lead productive lives.

releasing certain emotional urges that, if suppressed can result in emotional pain or mental
disease.

engagement with one’s life and the realization of one’s full physical cognitive, and social
emotional potential

RECREATION
2. Intellectual outcome -of all the personal benefits of leisure and recreation, those involving
intellectual or cognitive growth are the least well-known. Play is often thought of as physical
activity rather than a mental one, and it is regarded as a non-serious kind of involvement by
definition
3. Spiritual values and outcomes -A final area in which recreation and leisure make a vital
contribution to the healthy growth and well-being of human beings within the spiritual realm. -
Humans can exhibit their fullest and finest selves in their leisure hours, according to Josef Pieper
(1963).
Leisure time can be used to reflect on and evaluate ultimate values –
Outdoor recreation is frequently associated with spiritual pursuits. People can escape to the
