History of Vasectomy
●The first recorded vasectomy was performed on a
dog in 1823 by Cooper from England.
●A short time after that, R. Harrison of London who
was a barber by profession performed the first
human vasectomy in 1924.
●The first vasectomy program on a national scale was
launched in 1954 in India.
What to think about before Vasectomy
●Vasectomy is a permanent method of birth
control and not easily reversible.
●Vasectomy is a safe and effective and is a day
care procedure requiring hospitalization for a
few hours only.
False Myths about Vasectomy
●A vasectomy protects against sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs), including
infection with the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV).
●Vasectomy will make a man impotent and
reduce his sexual drive
Vasectomy Facts to know for sure
Pregnancy may occur after vasectomy because of:
●Failure to use another birth control method until the sperm
count is confirmed to be zero. It usually takes 10 to 20
ejaculations to completely clear sperm from the semen.
●Make sure sperm count is zero on two different analysis
before resuming unprotected sexual intercourse.
●The testicles and scrotum are cleaned with an antiseptic and
shaved.
●Each vas deferens is located by touch.
●A local anesthetic is injected into the area.
●Two small openings in the scrotum are made through an
opening, the two vas deferens tubes are cut.
Procedure of Vasectomy
Procedure of Vasectomy
●The two ends of the vas deferens are tied, cut and separated.
●The vas deferens is then replaced inside the scrotum and the
skin is closed with stitches that dissolve and do not have to be
removed.
●The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and can be done
in an clinic. It is best done by a Urologist.

What To Expect After Surgery
●The scrotum will be numb for 1 to 2 hours after a
vasectomy.
●Wearing snug underwear or a jockstrap will help
ease discomfort and protect the area.
●There might be some swelling and minor pain in
the scrotum for several days after the surgery.
What To Expect After Surgery
●There might be some swelling and minor pain in the scrotum
for several days after the surgery.
●The patient can resume normal activities same day.
●Ecosprin and anticoagulants to be stopped 48 hours before
surgery.
●Analgesics will be required
What To Expect After Surgery
●The patient can resume sexual intercourse once pain and
swelling subsides.
●But the partner can still get pregnant until the sperm count
is zero.
●Another method of birth control should be adopted until
the patient has a follow-up sperm count test, 6 weeks after
the vasectomy or after 10 to 20 ejaculations.
Complications of Vasectomy
●Bleeding under the skin, which may cause swelling or bruising.
●Infection at the site of the incision.
●Sperm leaking from a vas deferens into the tissue around it
and forming a small lump (sperm granuloma).
●Inflammation of the tubes that move sperm from the testicles
( epididymitis).
Important social facts to know about
vasectomy
●In rare cases, the vas deferens joins back
naturally (recanalization), and the man becomes
fertile again after many years.
● Hence any unexpected pregnancy after many
years should be first investigated by a sperm
count in the vasectomized male partner before
accusing the wife of infidelity.
