2. The simple present
tense
We use the simple present to
express habits, permanent truths.

3. EX. 1: He reads the newspaper every
morning.

4. Ex. 2: I go to school every day

5. Ex. 3: Water boils at 100 C˚

6. Remember!
•Verb to be –(ser, estar)
•I am, You are, He is,
She is, It is, We are,
You are, They are

7. Ex. 4: They are at home

8. Ex. 5: We are Students

9. Ordinary Verbs
You just have to worry with the
third person singular. We add “s”

10. Ex. 6: She Likes Apples

11. When the ordinary verbs end
in: o, x, z, s, ss, ch
We add “es”

12. Ex. 7: She goesto school every
day (verb to go)

13. Verbs ending in consonant + y
You substitute for ies

14. Ex. 8: She studies math

15. Simple Past
Regular verbs –Add “ed”
Verbs ending with
consonant + y –We can
substitute the “y” for “ied”

16. Simple past
•This verb tense is used to express actions
that finished in a definite time in the past.
•We use adverbs like: yesterday, last year,
last week, ago…

17. Ex. 9: He climbed a mountain
yesterday

18. Ex. 10: He cleaned the house last
week

19. Active and passive voice
•Active: Somebody cleans the
office

20. Passive
•Passive: The office is cleaned (by
somebody)
•(It emphasizes the action)

21. •The Passive is: Present simple (am, is
are) + Past Participle
•Or…
•Past simple (was/were) + Past Participle

22. Ex. 13: She opened the door.
(Active voice)

23. Ex. 14: The door was opened.
(passive voice)
