●To civilise the natives and change their customs and values.

Orientalist
●William Jones
●Henry Thomas Colebrooke
●Nathaniel Halhed
●They shared a deep respect for ancient cultures , both India and the west.

William Jones (Orientalist)
They felt that Indian civilisation had attained its glory but had subsequently
declined. They felt that institutions should be set up to encourage the study of
ancient Indian texts and teach Sanskrit and Persian.

Henry Thomas Colebrooke
An Orientalist ,who believed in India's ancient
glorious past .

Grave errors of the East
From the early nineteenth century many British officials began to criticise the
Orientalists. They were -
●James Mill
●Thomas Babington Macaulay
They believed no branch of Eastern knowledge could be compared to what
England had produced

Wood’s Despatch
➡It opposed to Oriental knowledge .
➡It points towards to study of business .
➡One of the practical uses the Despatch pointed was economy.
➡It made to study Indians about the development of British.
➡It introduced them to lead an European lifestyle.
AIM
➡To change the desires and taste of Indians and make them forced to buy British goods.
