VIJAYSAR Pterocarpus marsupium LINN

INTRODUCTION VIJAYSAR (Pterocarpus marsupium Linn.)   Pterocarpus marsupium Linn, commonly known as Vijaysar or Indian Kino, is a species of tree native to the Indian subcontinent. Belonging to the Fabaceae family, this medium-sized deciduous tree is renowned for its therapeutic properties and has been an integral part of traditional Indian medicine for centuries. The name " Vijaysar " is derived from Sanskrit, where " Vijaya " means victory and " Saar " refers to essence, symbolizing the tree's significant medicinal value in promoting health and well-being. Indigenous to regions like India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, Pterocarpus marsupium thrives in tropical climates and is often found growing in the moist, deciduous forests of these areas.   -- https://ayushdhara.in/index.php/ayushdhara/article/view/885/736

Post-Vedic Period In addition to its medicinal uses, Vijaysar also found applications in other aspects of daily life. The heartwood of the tree was valued for its durability and resistance to termites, making it sought after for crafting furniture, utensils, and even traditional wooden cups known as "tumbler cups" or " Dant Patra ," which were used to store water overnight for its purported health benefits   --https://easyayurveda.com/vijaysar

THERAPEUTIC USES OF VIJAYSAR - Bhavapraksash Nighantu/ Vijaysaar

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY Anti-diabetic and antioxidant activity Dhanabal et al. prepared the alcoholic extract of the bark of Pterocarpus marsupium and successively extracted with toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol. These fractions were found to have beneficial effects on blood glucose levels. A flexible dose double blind multi- center randomized controlled trial undertaken from October 1995 till January 1998 concluded that Vijaysar is an effective blood glucose lowering agent, its glycemic effect being comparable to that of tolbutamide in treatment of natïve patients with Type 2 diabetes . In another study, an aqueous extract of Pterocarpus marsupium wood was screened for hypoglycemic activity on alloxan induced diabetic rats and the results were found to be statistically significant Many of the studies have addressed the mechanism of action and toxicity of the extracts as well Anti-diabetic activity was evaluated on an experimental model by Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR). Type 2 diabetes was induced by administering streptozotocin (90 mg/kg, i.p. ) in a neonatal rat model. Aqueous extract of P. marsupium at doses 100 and 200 mg/kg, decreased the fasting and postprandial blood glucose in type 2 diabetic rats. -- https://ayushdhara.in/index.php/ayushdhara/article/view/885/736
