TOPIC: VIRTUAL REALITY (Emerging Technology in Healthcare)

INTRODUCTION Virtual reality (VR), is the use of computer modelling and simulation that enables a person to interact with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environments through a device known as a virtual reality headset or helmet with a stereoscopic screen. This term paper will explore the barriers that hinder the implementation of VR in healthcare, the strategies that may be employed to aid the implementation of VR in healthcare.

BENEFITS OF VIRTUAL REALITY

GRAPHICAL SUMMARY VIRTUAL REALITY

BARRIERS TO IMPLEMENTATION https://www.thevrara.com/blog2/2017/6/10/key-challenges-to-adoption-of-vrar-for-healthcare

Lack of experience in working with VR during treatment Causes l ack of confidence and self-efficacy in healthcare providers Lack of time and limited opportunities to learn how to use VR Technical malfunctioning of VR hardware or software Lack of client safety while wearing a VR headset due to: Limited space of the treatment room Limit ed freedom of movement Several cognitive limitations Distress, or cybersickness during VR, High costs to purchase VR equipment Lack of time training for maintaining the VR hardware Organizations not being innovation-minded. BARRIERS TO IMPLEMENTATION

Training and Education of healthcare providers on VR us e. Give support to healthcare providers in selecting appropriate content in VR that fits the patient’s needs . Provide information on how to instruct the patient about VR treatment . Discuss the potential and added value of VR from experienced healthcare providers who share their experience with VR to motivate others to integrate VR into their treatment . IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES

Healthcare organization should provide support, time, room, and technical system support to healthcare providers to learn and use VR. To enhance the adoption of VR technology through training and education on how to use and integrate VR into treatment. To increase their knowledge, skills, and experience of healthcare providers with VR to feel confident and increase self-efficacy in using VR in treatment with patients.  RECOMMENDATIONS

This term paper comes to the conclusion that, with careful implementation, virtual reality can improve the quality of care. The most common barriers were a perceived lack of VR experience, a lack of verified proof of VR's added value, and a lack of practical resources. The implementation strategies are providing healthcare providers with time and space to learn about virtual reality (VR) and apply it to their treatments, as well as practical resources and organizational support.
