Forest and Climate Change of the Government
of India as a premier Indian organisation in
zoological research and studies to promote the
survey, exploration and research of the fauna in
the country.
OBJECTIVES
To conduct surveys and research on the fauna of India: ZSI aims to explore, identify, and document the diverse
fauna of India, including animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects.
To study the distribution, habitat, and behavior of Indian fauna: ZSI studies the distribution, habitat, and behavior
of various animal species in India to understand their ecology, evolution, and conservation status.
To identify and classify new species: ZSI discovers and describes new species of animals, which helps to expand our
knowledge of the country's biodiversity.
To conserve and manage Indian fauna: ZSI provides scientific inputs for the conservation and management of
Indian fauna, including the development of conservation strategies and management plans.
To promote taxonomy and systematics: ZSI promotes the study of taxonomy and systematics, which is essential
for understanding the relationships between different species and their evolutionary history.
To provide scientific advice to the government: ZSI provides scientific advice to the government on matters related
to wildlife conservation, management, and research.
To collaborate with national and international organizations: ZSI collaborates with national and international
organizations to advance our knowledge of Indian fauna and to promote conservation efforts.
