Notice: ‘Advert’ and ‘Ad’ are abbreviations of the word ‘Advertisement’. It is called truncation as only the first part of the word is used. AIDA is another form of abbreviation. It is called an acronym . The initial letter of each word is used to create a new word. The letters are written as capital letters – no full stops are used .

An advertisement promotes a product or service (usually by emotive and persuasive means). A successful advertisement will make use of one or more of the following techniques – creativity, emotion, reason, fact or opinion. Emotion and subjective opinion dominate advertising.

A written advertisement should: Interest, stimulate and influence Describe and promote in an exciting original manner Convince Target a specific market Provide necessary information Be simple and memorable

AIDA principle : ATTENTION – Grab the attention of the buyer INTEREST – Sustain the consumer’s interest DESIRE – Create a desire to possess the advertised product ACTION – Spur the buyer into action
