Do You Know ?
Health tips to elders
zzEvolve a life style that emphasis good nutrition,
personal hygiene, adequate exercise, rest,
moderation in eating habits and above all a
positive mental attitude.
zzDo not ignore unusual and suspicious symptoms
relating to your health. Have regular health
checkups even if you feel healthy.
zzEnsure that you have a Family Doctor and
avoid change of Doctors frequently. Avoid self
medication and over the counter drugs.
zzMaintain a file of all your medical records which
can be accessed by your family members whenever
required.
zzCarry with you a card
containing your name,
address, phone numbers
of contact persons and
your Doctor along with
particulars of your drug
regime
zzDo not stop your medicines
all of a sudden without
doctor’s advice.
zzCultivate good oral care
to prevent infection. Do
not be averse to artificial
dentures. It improves food intake, digestion,
clarity of speech and facial features.
zz Keep yourself physically, mentally and socially
active. Read and write in sufficient light
zzThere is no specific dietary rule for elders. Eat
healthy food and avoid over eating. Consume a diet
high in fibre, low in animal fat and salt.
zzHave a good and nutritious breakfast, moderate
lunch and light dinner. Include lots of fruits and
vegetables in your diet. Avoid fatty and spicy foods.
Ensure that you drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.
zzEnsure that you take a multivitamin tablet daily
for better supply of Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, D and
E.
zzDo not indulge in vigorous exercises. For elders
light exercise like walking is
the best. Do not be reluctant
to rest and relax.
zz As far as possible
avoid emotions such
as depression, worry,
fear, sorrow, envy, hate,
resentment as they can
adversely affect your health
and cause visible physical
disabilities. Remember that
anxiety places more stress
on the heart than any other
stimulus.
Personality development
Your steps to Success
Did you know that fewer than 10% of
people who set goals actually achieve them? How can you ensure YOUR success? Try using the Top 10 Tips below.
zzWrite Them Down. It’s a fact: writing down your goals gives you a higher chance of success.
zzCommit. Move beyond the land of “good ideas”
to promise yourself to show up for your goals. Perhaps you can do a ritual or ceremony to symbolize your commitment.
zzTell People. Let your biggest fans is on your new commitments and goals for the year.
zzGet Accountability. Even better than just letting others is on your “secret” dreams and goals-get some accountability. Meet for lunch once a month with a group that will ask you, “So, how’s it going with your goal?” Hire a Life Coach. Talk to your best friend. Get some support!
zzMake a Plan. Ensure success with a step-by-step
plan. Electric Kites Success Coaching loves to work backwards by starting with the end vision of where you want to be and working backwards to where you are today. You’ll find an easy plan to make your goal a reality.
zzDo a Goal Check-In. Before you decide on what you’ll take on for the year, make certain you can answer, “YES!” to the following questions: “Am I the primary reason for setting this goal (vs. your mom, boyfriend, wife, boss, society)? Do I feel alive and energized by this goal? Is this goal in line with
my life purpose or mission?”
zzGet Real! If you’re contemplating putting a goal down that you always put down and never achieve, take a second look. How will this goal end DIFFERENTLY this year? Is this goal something you need to let go of ? What purpose is it serving you? What’s a good enough reason to finally achieve this goal?
zzFocus With Reminders. Once you’ve got your goals and plan in place, figure out ways to remind yourself. Some Electric Kites’ clients post their goals in their bathrooms or cars. Others put reminders in their palm pilots or cell phones. Figure out what works for you.
zzBelieve and Visualize. Do you know the story
about the group of basketball players who spent one hour visualizing making baskets, while another group actually practiced? The visualizing players had better seasons! So visualize yourself on New Years Eve with all your goals achieved. What would that look like? How would it feel? Visualize once a day and see the difference it can make in your life.

High-quality early education and child care for
young children improves their health and promotes
their development and learning.
zzParents ought to prepare their children
so that they are able to face hardships of
future life and are able to overcome difficult
situations with tactfulness
zzIt is the prime responsibility of every parent
to develop emotional, educational, social
and professional skills in children.
zzChildren gradually start preparing
themselves as per the aspirations of their
proactive parents.
zzEvery parent in this world desires to be the
parent of an intelligent, gifted, bright, smart
and active child. We want that even if our
child is good at sports, dancing or singing, he
must perform exceptionally well at school.
zzParents are desperate to do anything to help
their child stand first in class. Some parents
punish their child when they don’t do well
but it is a wrong approach. Stick is not a good
solution. You should motivate your child if
you want him to excel in the long run.
zzYou should encourage your child for
recognising his potential, abilities and
weaknesses.
zzYour motivating words that ‘you can do it’
will definitely do magic. Motivate him to try
harder in the next exams. The best thing is
self- confidence.
zzYou should see his notebooks and dairy to
know that what your child does at school.
You should remain cool headed when you
are motivating your child to do home work.
zzDon’t demoralise your child if he is not doing
well. Encourage him with certain types
of material and nonmaterial incentives. If
your child is showing disinterest after all
your efforts, you can take help of experts
and teachers. Tell your child firmly to
finish his homework with a little bit of
strictness. Don’t allow him to give excuses
and arguments.
zzMany parents complained that they don’t
have time to sit all the time with their
children when they are doing homework.
You can supervise your child while you are
cooking food or doing some other work.
Don’t sit with him for the whole time but be
aware about what your child is doing. Don’t
allow your child to
do homework in his
room. Arrange a good
study table in your
own room for your
child.
zz When parents
show their interest
in the study of their
loved ones, there is
no place for poor
performance. You
should be tactful
with your child.
Don’t fix the hours of
study. Leave it on the
choice of your child.
Whenever he is in a
relaxing mood, you
can tell him to study.
Be
friendly with
your child.

Hair coloring was done earlier by hair dressers at
saloon. Today hair coloring is very simple, user friendly
and can be done at their house in 30-40 minutes.
‹‹History of Hair coloring –
The extraordinary history of hair color can be
traced back to Sumerians 2000 BC. Nobel Sumerians
used to color their gray hairs with golden dye, using
silver or gold combs. Ancient Egyptians, Romans,
and Greeks began to use hair color which was made
from plant and animal extracts regularly. Egyptian
women in 1500 BC, colored their hair using henna
plant extracts. The Romans believed that hair dyeing
and coloring was a symbol of woman’s eroticism, and
highlighted her gracefulness and elegancy. By 27 BC,
hair dye became a much accepted trend, and both
men and women in Rome used hair color as a way of
enhancing their looks and appearance. Roman Empire
insisted prostitutes to color their hair with yellow
color or to wear yellow color wig to indicate their
profession. Prostitutes were coloring their hair with
ashes of burned plants, flowers and nuts to achieve the
yellow hue.
Hair dyes were made using henna , crushed
nut shells, berries, and vinegar. Red hair dye was
prepared by fermenting leeches in vinegar for two
months. This mixture was applied on the hair, which
was then exposed to the sun for hours to get red hue.
In the 1860s, hydrogen peroxide was a common
option for hair bleaching. With time, this came to be
known as blond dye, until the 1930s. Hydrogen peroxide
was used along with other ingredients like ammonia
and soap powder. This combination damaged the hair,
and burned the scalp. Soon this combination became
less popular.
Hair coloring and dying took a major leap when
paraphenylenediamine (PPD) was discovered by
Dr August Wilhelm in 1863. This was the magic
substance that was used in creating the first synthetic
dye. PPD along with Hydrogen peroxide, which was
a gentler option for hair bleaching, together led to a
major invention. The invention of this synthetic dye

(1) Cuticle cells firmly attached to cortex, healthy hair. (2) Ammonia effect – shaft is swollen Cuticle cells are raised from cortex. (3) Overtreatment of hair with ammonia, Cuticle cells are damaged
The hair on the head is most striking feature for every person. For a long time, hair
has been considered more than just a biological feature, and is more often center of
beautification. For women, hair is an ornament that has transformed their beauty at
higher level. Black hair symbolizes the younger age, youthfulness, energy and active
life. As we grow older, hair turns to gray and silver white. Hence gray hair and white
hair symbolizes the old age, sluggish and inactive life. Today everyone wants to look
younger, energetic, enthusiast and visually appealing to other people. Hence they
hide gray hair by applying color to hair and this process is called “Hair coloring – Hair dyeing”. Hair coloring is more of cosmetic reason and is to hide their gray
hairs by old age people. Younger people color their hair as a fashion.

PPD resulted in further research and
development in hair colors. In 1932,
a New York chemist Lawrence Gelb,
created a hair dye that would actually
penetrate the shaft of the hair, and
also not harming the shaft of hair.
Today women could lighten, color,
shampoo, and condition their hair in
just one easy step, in 30-45 minutes.
‹‹About our Hair:
The hair which is visible to eyes on the scalp is
called hair shaft. The part of the hair which is inside
the skin is called hair root. The shaft is the hard
filamentous part that extends above the skin surface.
A cross section the hair shaft may be divided into three
zones. They are 1) Cuticle 2) Cortex 3) Medulla.
The cuticle consists of several layers of flat, thin,
colorless cells laid out overlapping one another as roof
shingles. The cuticle protects the cortex; cuticle cells
lie flat and attached to one another firmly in healthy
hair. If the cuticle cells are raised and fine openings
are present in between raised cuticle cells, and expose
the cortex, means damaged hair shaft.
The cortex contains keratin bundles in cell
structure along with hair coloring material called
melanin. All natural color of hair is due to melanin
granules present in colorless keratin bundles. There
are two types of melanin called 1) Eumelanin and 2)
Pheomelanin. In India eumelanin is the dominant
pigment present in hairs and gives black color to the
hairs. Pheomelanin is dominant color in Europeans
and give red hair. As the person grow older, melanin
production decreases and stops. The hair shaft with
no melanin looses their natural color and turn gray to
white color of old age.
The medulla is an open area at the fiber’s center.
Hair Dye or hair color is a chemical substance that
is used to change the color of hair. Hair dye is used
mostly to hide gray hair by old aged people. Young
people apply hair dye to change their hair color as a
fashion.
‹‹Chemistry of hair dye –
In the 1860s, hydrogen peroxide was used for
bleaching hairs. Hydrogen peroxide was oxidizing
melanin pigment and lightens the intensity of black
color; the hairs were becoming light colored. Hence it
was called blond dye. In 1907, Eugene Schuler, a French
chemist, developed an innovative hair color formula
and called it “Aureole”. This name was later changed to
“L’Oreal”. L’Oreal became very famous with Parisian
hairdressers and soon it became household product,
and women started applying hair dye in their home.
‹‹The hair colors can be classified into 4 types.
1) Temporary hair color, 2) Semi-Permanent, 3)
Demi-Permanent and 4) Permanent hair color
1. Temporary hair color – The pigment molecules are
large and cannot penetrate the outer cuticle layer.
The color particles remain adsorbed (closely
adherent) to the hair shaft and are easily removed
with 1 or 2 shampooing. Dye molecules only coat
the hairs, it is physical action. The dye molecules
do not penetrate the hair shaft; hence there is
no chemical action. Hence there is no damage
to the hair. These are the least hazardous of all
the dyes. Vegetable dyes like “Henna” is very
popular dye and is used throughout the
World. Henna coats the shaft of hair
and increases the thickness of hair
shaft. Repeated application of henna
improves the hair shaft and do not
damage the hair. Similarly extracts of
flowers, leaves, fruits and walnut are
used to color the hairs. Food grade dyes
are also used.
2. Permanent hair color – are the most popular dye
products. Permanent hair coloring dyes consists
of three components. They are a) Primary
intermediates and couplers, coloring agent, b)
Oxidants (Hydrogen peroxide) and c) An alkali
usually ammonia. The modern permanent
dyes consist of “Paraphenylenediamine
(PPD or similar Para compounds)” as
primary intermediates and “Resorcinol” as
couplers. Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes colorless
Paraphenylenediamine dye to colorful chemical
and also lightens melanin. Ammonia causes cuticle
to swell and rise from cortex and also creates few
openings, through these openings oxidized PPD
dye enters cuticular layer and reach cortical cells.
Once oxidized PPD dye accumulates in cortical
cells, it gives color to hair shaft. Once the PPD dye
has entered the cortical cells, it cannot be dislodged
from the hairs even 15- 20 times washes with
shampoo. Hence PPD dye is called Permanent hair
dye. Alkaline ammonia action continues to act on
hair, swelling and rising of cuticle cells continues,
hence it is to be neutralized by acidic rinse or to
be washed by shampoo, then only ammonia action
stop. If ammonia action is not neutralized, hair
damage continues and hair becomes brittle and
dry. Everyday 0.1 mm hair grows, on 10
th
day, 1 mm
hair grows, and this newly grown hair will not
have this new pigment. Hence permanent hair dye
is to be applied once in 2 months or 3 months.
3. Semi-Permanent hair dyes coat the hair shaft rather
than penetrate. They do not change melanin. Heat
is used to deepen the color penetration rather
than the use of chemicals like ammonia and
hydrogen peroxide. The color lasts for 4-6 weeks (6-
12 shampoo wash). They do not harm the hair as
Permanent hair dye harms the hair.
4. Demi-Permanent hair dye falls between the semi-
permanent and permanent dye process. Uses a
catalyst such as a 10% mild peroxide developer with
a non-ammonia alkali to swell the cuticle, allow dye
molecules to penetrate into the cortex and deposit
color inside the hair shaft. A neutral or slightly
acid after-rinse or shampoo wash is used to stop
the alkaline swelling reaction, allow the cuticle to
close, and trap the color molecules inside. The mild
chemical reaction does not lighten the melanin and
hardly changes the hair structure.
‹‹Precaution –
Always conduct a patch test before you use any
coloring products. Apply small amount on right
forearm, volar aspect (front) or behind the ear lobule
and watch for 48 hours for the signs of irritation or
allergy. If no untoward effects develop, then only
use the coloring products on head. Always read the
ingredients list before you buy a product, and follow
Henna leaves and henna powder

First Aid
Priorities
Definition of first aid: First aid is the immediate
assistance provided to a sick or injured person until professional help arrives. It is concerned not only with physical injury or illness but also with other initial care, including psychosocial support for people suffering from emotional distress caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. First aid interventions seek to “preserve life, alleviate suffering, prevent further illness or injury and promote recovery”. First aid provider is a layperson with basic first aid knowledge and skills and the person requiring care is known as a casualty.
Number of people reached:
In 2009, 21 National Societies in Europe trained more than 2.3 million people. During the same period, 7 million people were trained in certified first aid courses worldwide. In 2014, approximately 15 million people were trained in first aid by Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in 116 countries around the globe by more than 180,000 active first aid trainers (Source: Global survey data on first aid). Over
20 million people are reached globally each year, and more than 700,000 volunteers and staff mobilized.
Figure: 1.World First Aid Day 9
th
September,
2017-Theme “Domestic Accidents”
World First Aid Day was constituted by the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies
(IFRC), celebrated on the second
Saturday of every September since the year 2000.
Theme for the year 2017 is “Domestic Accidents”,
which affect all populations regardless of age, sex,
income, or geographic region. Falls are the most
common home accidents, cause serious injury and the
risk increases with age. First aid must be delivered
using up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines and best
practice. Foundation for first aid education has three
components that should be addressed to leverage
knowledge and skill development
zzA cognitive or brain-based component that
recognizes an individual or community’s learning
history and builds from that point.
zzA social learning component that identifies
barriers and leverages relationships to inspire
and support proper emergency action.
zzAn environmental component that helps
individuals to identify and use resources to
help (e.g. laws, AED, emergency dispatch
system).
General approach for a
victim: Certain steps of first aid
care are common, when caring for any
casualty. Although the elements of response are
often carried out in the sequence outlined below,
in reality, tasks may occur simultaneously. The
following steps are observed when approaching
a casualty:
1. Assessment: a) Scene survey:
primary survey for safety, personal
protection and accident mechanism.
b) Casualty survey: airway, breathing, circulation,
disability, exposure (ABCDE). Start immediate
life-saving interventions: open the airway, support
breathing, give CPR and control serious bleeding.
For all emergency care including first aid, providers
should first survey the scene to assess for Safety. First
aid providers must be aware of their personal safety
and take universal precautions that may vary based on
specific circumstances. The risks may come from:
The environment: The surroundings may not
be safe due to electric cables, fire, risk of explosion,
dangerous goods or the casualty may be in an unsafe
location, such as in or near water or ice. Special
attention should be paid to confined (closed) spaces as
there might be a possibility of lack of oxygen and/or
emission of poisonous gases or the limited possibility
to escape, if needed. Taking this into consideration,
the first aid provider should decide whether he or she:
zzshould go ahead or wait for technical rescue teams
(e.g. fire brigades, EMS,
zzMine rescue)
zzshould only enter with the assistance or escort of
technical rescue teams
zzshould only enter for a short time to move the
casualty (preferably with
zzTechnical assistance) to a safer place in order to
provide care more effectively
zzFeels it is safe for the casualty to remain in their
current location.
The casualty: The casualty may be aggressive due
to alcohol or drugs. There might be a risk of infection
is a common threat due to contact with body fluids.
First aid provider must understand what injuries
might be expected in that particular patient in that
situation. This applies not only to traumas but also to
other acute events. All casualties should be thoroughly
assessed to assure that all first aid needs required are
5 common Emergencies you must know what to do
‹‹Part-1

11HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
identified. The priorities of identification and
treatment allow
zzPrioritizing the needs by taking care of the most
time-sensitive problem first; and
zzProviding care once needs are clearly identified.
The common mnemonic for assessment of any
casualty is ABCDE: A: Airway,
B: Breathing, C: Circulation: check for any external
bleeding, D: Disability: mental status and peripheral
nervous system and E: Exposure. EMS should be
activated, if any problem during the ABCDE survey
is identified in addition to immediate care required. If
resources permit, along the ABCDE pathway, a short
medical history may also be taken. In an advanced
training, SAMPLE scheme of evaluation may be
followed- S: Signs and symptoms, A: Allergies, M:
Medication, P: Past medical history, L: Last meal and
E: Event
2. Casualty positioning Guidelines: Good
Practice Points
zzFirst aid provider should approach the casualty
from the side of his or her face. In this way, the
casualty is not forced to move his or her head.
zzAn unresponsive casualty should be rapidly
assessed for breathing. If normal breathing is
not quickly identified in the position found, place
the casualty, gently, in the supine position. If the
person is breathing normally, he or she should be
placed in the side lying recovery position.
zz If the casualty is pregnant, the left side lying
recovery position is preferred.
General rules to be observed regarding the
position of the victim:
zzIf the area is unsafe for the first aid provider or for
the casualty, he or she should be moved to a safer
place.
zzIf the person is face down and unresponsive
(prone position), the first aid provider should turn
the casualty face up (supine position) to check
breathing.
zzIf the casualty is unresponsive and breathing
normally but might have a spinal injury, it is
preferable not to move him or her.
zzIf the casualty is unresponsive and has difficulty
breathing because of bleeding, copious secretions
or vomiting, or if you are alone and have to leave
to get help, the casualty should be placed on their
side with their airway open (recovery position).
zzIf the casualty is conscious and
breathes with difficulty, the best
position for effective breathing
is to seat him or her upright or
leaning slightly forward.
3. Call for help: Call EMS or
further help if not already done during
primary assessment a) Call first – for
help and b) Call fast – emergency
service, once assessment has been
made. Call a pre-determined national
number(s). In European countries a
common emergency call number 112
has been introduced. In the United
States and Canada the number to call
is 911. Further help required may
include apart from EMS - fire brigade,
police, other medical services, poison control centre
etc. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112:
Telecom Commission, on March 28, 2016, accepted
recommendation by Telecom Regulatory Authority
of India (TRAI) for making 112 as single emergency
number for all services like police, fire and ambulance
in the country. It is a free of cost SMS based access to
the mobile phone users to contact the authorities, in
case of any emergency. “In emergency situations every
passing second counts, whether it is a burglary, theft,
road rage, or a fire spreading, or a citizen struggling
with a heart attack “ the first few minutes are crucial.
It is likely that this crucial time may be lost in figuring
out what number to dial”. Currently, in most countries,
112 is a part of the GSM standard and all GSM-
compatible telephone handsets are able to dial 112 even
when locked or with no SIM card present.
4. Secondary survey: (ABCDE) eventually carry
out further assessment using simple questions or more
sophisticated schemes like SAMPLE evaluation.
5. Additional first aid as the situation requires:
The availability of cellular phones allows hand-free
activation of EMS while initiating care. First aid
providers may administer medication to
zzHelp the casualty to administer his or her
prescribed drugs for:
ÂÂchest pain suspected of cardiac origin:
aspirin, nitroglycerin
ÂÂbronchial asthma: bronchodilator
ÂÂanaphylactic reaction: epinephrine
zzFor specially trained first aid providers, to
administer certain medicines upon his or her
discretion, if local regulations allow.
ÂÂfor decompression sickness, for scuba
divers: oxygen
ÂÂnarcotic overdose: Naloxone
Oxygen is considered as a medication and different
regulations are followed regarding administration by a
first aid provider. If local regulations permit, first aid
providers trained in the use of oxygen may be allowed
to administer it for victims of hypoxia.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a
lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies in
which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
The common emergencies include heart attack or
near drowning, The American Heart Association
recommends that everyone, untrained bystanders
and medical personnel alike - begin CPR with chest

12HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
compressions. It’s far better to do something than to
do nothing at all if you’re fearful that your knowledge
or abilities aren’t 100 percent complete. Here’s advice
from the American Heart Association:
zzUntrained: Provide hands-only CPR that is
uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120
a minute until paramedics arrive. No need to try
rescue breathing.
zzTrained and ready to go:   If you›re well-trained
and confident in your ability, begin with chest
compressions instead of first checking the airway
and doing rescue breathing. Start CPR with 30
chest compressions before checking the airway
and giving rescue breaths.
zzTrained but rusty: If you’ve previously received
CPR training and you’re not confident - just do
chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 a minute.
The above advice applies to adults, children and
infants needing CPR, but not new- borns. When the
heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause
irreversible brain damage in only a few minutes. A
person may die within eight to 10 minutes. CPR can
keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other
vital organs until more definitive medical treatment
can restore a normal heart rhythm. To learn CPR
properly, take an accredited first-aid training course,
including CPR and how to use an automated external
defibrillator (AED). If you are untrained and have
immediate access to a phone, call 112 before beginning
CPR. The dispatcher can instruct you in the proper
procedures until help arrives.

Figure: 2. Remember to spell C-A-B: The
American Heart Association uses the acronym of CAB- compressions, airway, breathing to help people remember the order to perform the steps of CPR
Before starting CPR, check:
zzIs the environment safe for the person?
zzIs the person conscious or unconscious?
zzIf the person appears unconscious, tap or shake his or her shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you OK?”
zzIf the person doesn’t respond and two people are available, one should call 112 or the local emergency number and one should begin CPR. If you are alone and have immediate access to a telephone, call Emergency number before beginning CPR- unless you think the person has
become unresponsive because of suffocation (such as from drowning). In this special case, begin CPR for one minute and then call local emergency number.
zzIf an AED is immediately available, deliver one shock if instructed by the device, then begin CPR.
Compressions: Restore blood circulation
zzPut the person on his or her back on a firm surface.
zzKneel next to the person’s neck and shoulders.
zzPlace the heel of one hand over the center of the person’s chest, between the nipples. Place your other hand on top of the first hand. Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly above your hands.
zzUse your upper body weight (not just your arms) as you push straight down on (compress) the chest at least 5 centimeters but not greater than 6 centimeters. Push hard at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions a minute.
zzIf you haven’t been trained in CPR, continue chest compressions until there are signs of movement or until emergency medical personnel take over. If you have been trained in CPR, go on to checking the airway and rescue breathing.
Airway: Clear the airway
zzIf you’re trained in CPR and you’ve performed 30 chest compressions, open the person’s airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Put your palm on the person’s forehead and gently tilt the head back. Then with the other hand, gently lift the chin forward to open the airway.
zzCheck for normal breathing, taking no more than five or 10 seconds. Look for chest motion, listen for normal breath sounds, and feel for the person’s breath on your cheek and ear. Gasping is not considered to be normal breathing. If the person isn’t breathing normally and you are trained in CPR, begin mouth-to-mouth breathing. If you believe the person is unconscious from a heart attack and you haven’t been trained in emergency procedures, skip mouth-to-mouth breathing and continue chest compressions.
Breathing: Breathe for the person: Rescue
breathing can be mouth-to-mouth breathing or mouth- to-nose breathing if the mouth is seriously injured or can’t be opened.
zzWith the airway open (using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver), pinch the nostrils shut for mouth-to- mouth breathing and cover the person’s mouth with yours, making a seal.
zzPrepare to give two rescue breaths. Give the first rescue breath, lasting one second and watch to see if the chest rises. If it does rise, give the second breath. If the chest doesn’t rise, repeat the head- tilt, chin-lift maneuver and then give the second breath. Thirty chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths is considered one cycle. Be careful not to provide too many breaths or to breathe with too much force.
zzResume chest compressions to restore circulation.
zzIf the person has not begun moving after five cycles (about two minutes) and an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, apply it and follow

13HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
the prompts. Administer one shock, and then
resume CPR, starting with chest compressions -for
two more minutes before administering a second
shock. If you’re not trained to use an AED, an
Emergency medical operator may be able to guide
you in its use. If an AED isn’t available, go to step
5 below.
zzContinue CPR until there are signs of movement
or until emergency medical personnel take over.
To perform CPR on a child: The procedure for
giving CPR to a child of age 1 through 8 is essentially
the same as that for an adult. The American Heart
Association also recommends the following to perform
CPR on a child:
zzIf you’re alone, perform five cycles of compressions
and breaths on the child, this should take about two
minutes before calling local emergency number or
using an AED.
zzUse two hands, or only one hand if the child is
very small, to perform chest compressions. Press
straight down on (compress) the chest about 5
centimeters. If the child is an adolescent, push
straight down on the chest at least 5 centimeters
but not greater than 6 centimeters.
zzBreathe more gently.
zzUse the same compression-breath rate as is
used for adults: 30 compressions followed by two
breaths (one cycle). Following the two breaths,
immediately begin the next cycle of compressions
and breaths. If there are two people conducting
CPR, conduct 15 compressions followed by two
breaths.
zzAfter five cycles (about two minutes) of CPR,
if there is no response and an AED is available,
apply it and follow the prompts. Use pediatric
pads if available, for children ages 1 through 8.
If pediatric pads aren’t available, use adult pads.
Do not use an AED for children younger than age
1. Administer one shock, and then resume CPR,
starting with chest compressions- for two more
minutes before administering a second shock. If
you’re not trained to use an AED, an Emergency
medical operator may be able to guide you in its
use. Continue until the child moves or help arrives.
To perform CPR on a baby; Most cardiac arrests
in babies occur from lack of oxygen, such as from
drowning or choking. If you know the baby has an
airway obstruction, perform first aid for choking. If
you don’t know why the baby isn’t breathing, perform
CPR. To begin, examine the situation. Stroke the baby
and watch for a response, such as movement, but don’t
shake the baby. If there’s no response, follow the CAB
procedures below and time the call for help as follows:
zzIf you’re the only rescuer and CPR is needed, do
CPR for two minutes (about five cycles) before
calling your local emergency number.
zzIf another person is available, have that person
call for help immediately while you attend to the
b a b y.
Airway: Clear the airway
zzAfter 30 compressions, gently tip the head back by
lifting the chin with one hand and pushing down
on the forehead with the other hand.
zzIn no more than 10 seconds, put your ear near the
baby’s mouth and check for breathing: Look for
chest motion, listen for breath sounds, and feel for
breath on your cheek and ear.
Breathing: Breathe for the baby
zzCover the baby’s mouth and nose with your mouth.
zzPrepare to give two rescue breaths. Use the
strength of your cheeks to deliver gentle puffs
of air (instead of deep breaths from your lungs)
to slowly breathe into the baby’s mouth one time,
taking one second for the breath. Watch to see
if the baby’s chest rises. If it does, give a second
rescue breath. If the chest does not rise, repeat
the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver and then give the
second breath.
zzIf the baby’s chest still doesn’t rise, examine the
mouth to make sure no foreign material is inside.
If an object is seen, sweep it out with your finger.
If the airway seems blocked, perform first aid for
a choking baby.
zzGive two breaths after every 30 chest compressions.
If two people are conducting CPR, give two breaths
after every 15 chest compressions.
zzPerform CPR for about two minutes before calling
for help unless someone else can make the call
while you attend to the baby.
zzContinue CPR until you see signs of life or until
medical personnel arrive.
Fainting (Syncope) is defined as the momentary
loss of postural tone and consciousness,
characterized by a brisk onset but short duration
and often with spontaneous recovery. Fainting
can happen suddenly and without warning when
blood flow to the brain is impeded or interrupted
(cerebral hypo perfusion) due to an existing
underlying medical condition, emotional
response and physical injury to the head. Other
specific causes of fainting include extreme
exhaustion/fatigue, low blood sugar, reaction
to pain, sight of blood and gore, and existing
problems with the heart.
Recognizing Fainting: Common signs
of fainting often include the following signs
and symptoms:1. Dizziness/lightheadedness 2.
Confusions 3. Nausea 4. Tunnel vision/blurred
vision 5. Weakness 6. Pale, cool skin 7. Sweating
8. Sudden but brief loss of consciousness.

Does your child
wet the bed at
night ????
How to get rid of this habit ?
Rakesh, a handsome boy aged 18 came to
consult me with his mother, he was hesitant
to narrate his problem so his mom narrated
that he has problem of bedwetting. When I
encouraged this young chap to speak up, he
narrated that he passes urine in sleep at night,
this problem got worsened when he joined
engineering course and started staying in
college hostel. He wept uncontrollably during
consultation when he explained how insulted
and shameful he feels when his room-mates
commented about this.
After a detailed consultation, I prescribed
a remedy called SEPIA to Rakesh and also
counseled him, after 3-4 months of treatment
his bedwetting problem vanished completely
and I could see the confidence and joy in his
face when he consulted me last time.
Bedwetting which is in medical terms
called as Enuresis is a common problem in
young children, Rakesh’s case is a rare one as
it continued up till 18 yrs of age.
A child is diagnosed be suffering with
Enuresis if urinary incontinence continues
beyond 4 years for daytime and 6 years for
nighttime. Before this specified age if child
wets bed, it is normal and it doesn’t need any
medical help.
From birth till the age of 6 years is
required for the maturation of the nerves and
the urinary system to function optimally, to
sense the signal of full bladder. Even after 7
years still your child has not developed this
and wets bed often then you need to consult a
doctor.
‹‹Types of Enuresis
zzIf the child has never been dry at night
-Primary enuresis
zzIf the child begins bedwetting after a gap of 6 months or
more – Secondary enuresis
zzBedwetting happens only at night (Nocturnal) while
sleeping—Nocturnal enuresis
zzIf involuntary voiding of urine also occurs in day time
while awake—Diurnal enuresis
Among all types Primary nocturnal enuresis is most
common of all comprising 90% of all cases.
‹‹What causes Bedwetting?
In majority of cases of bedwetting the cause is not known,
it is assumed to be due to complex interaction of Genetic,
Physiological and Psychological factors.
Some of the other causes include
Genetic- i.e., if parents had it in their childhood then
chances of their children suffering is high.
Bedwetting and Adenoids- Some children who are
suffering with enlarged adenoids, tonsils and nasal polyps
can suffer with bedwetting. Sometimes if these are treated,
bedwetting problem too subsides.
Diabetes, Urinary tract infections (UTI) etc are the other
known causes for enuresis.
Psychological factors: In our clinical experience we have
seen that conflicts between parents, between parents & child
are found to be most common causes which either trigger or
worsen the problem of enuresis in children.
In one case of 8 old boy, who consulted me with his parents
for enuresis, on enquiring with the child it was found that the
child was wetting the bed when ever his parents had fight. A
remedy called NATRUM .MURIATICUM helped the child to
overcome this problem along with the parental counseling.
In one more case of a girl who wetted the bed every night,
on further enquiry it was found that the child was very much
scared of her teacher who was very strict & used to punish
kids for trivial reasons., the girl used to have bad nightmares.
Talking to the teacher about this issue solved the problem, who
adopted more child friendly way of teaching. Of course few
doses of Bach flower remedy ROCK ROSE helped the child to
come out of fear and she became more confident and bold than
earlier.

methi seeds - 1 small spoon
Jaggery - half cup
coconut - 1/4 cup (If you want you can add little elaichi)
zzMethod
Soak raw rice, rice flakes and methi seeds together in water for one
hour Grind them nicely with coconut and jaggery.
Put the tava on the gas and prepare dosa by adding little oil. (The
gas should be in sim) The dosa could be served with ghee or butter.
Spinach Dosa
zzIngredients
wheat flour - 1 cup besan - 1 cup chopped spinach - 200 gms. onion - 1 (big) green chillies - 5 (chopped) curry leaves - 4-5 leaves salt to taste
zzMethod
In a mixing bowl, put all the ingredients and mix them well with water
to form a thin batter. Then keep it aside for 5-10 mts. Heat a non stick pan. Pour the batter to form a dosa. Drop a spoon of oil on the sides to
make it crisper. Once its cooked on one side, turn the dosa to the
other side so that it gets cooked well. Repeat the same process for other dosas also. Serve the dosa with butter.
Sweet Dosa
zzIngredients
rice-3 cups toor dal-1/2 cup channa dal- 1/2 cup coarsely crushed black pepper freshly grated coconut 1 whole bunch of finely chopped cilantro finely chopped green chilies cumin salt oil
zzMethod
Blend the rice coarsely in a blender. Blend even the dals coarsely in
a blender. Soak all the 3 powders in Luke warm water adding sufficient salt. Make sure to add the water just enough to cover the mixture (make the batter a little thicker than the dosa batter).
Let the mixture set for about one and half an hour. Add cumin, green
chillies, coconut, coriander & crushed black pepper to the mixture & mix well. Mean while heat a griddle & grease it with a tsp. of oil. Ladle a big spoon full of batter into the center of the pan and spread it around in a circular fashion (from inside out) shaping the batter into a thick dosa.
Wait for few seconds and then take a tsp. of oil and spread it over
the edges of the dosa. When the edges turn golden, flip the dosa on the other side. Again add a tsp. of oil & cook it for a minute. Serve the dosa with butter.
‹‹Child is not at fault:
Parents should understand
that, child is not at fault; he/she is not doing it intentionally. Parents shouldn’t punish the child in any way, they should encourage the child not to do so, but never punish, taunt them and never ever discuss it with others about this issue, esp. in the presence of their child.
Certain events in child’s
life which might have had an impact should be assessed, such as entering school for the first time, birth of a sibling, etc. open communication with the child helps in understanding their problems, express their feelings which helps in reducing stress.
‹‹How to handle bedwetting
Most children get rid of
bedwetting without intervention. In cases where bedwetting is becoming overly disturbing and causing some emotional problems in the child, parents should seek medical help.
Reprimanding or punishing
the child will not benefit, rather it worsens the situation. So the following child friendly methods should be adopted.
Motivational therapy: Involve
the child; tell the child that he/ she has to take responsibility of not voiding the urine at night in bed by adopting the following steps
‹‹Child’s role
ÂÂVoid urine before going
to bed
ÂÂKeep diary of wet and
dry nights
ÂÂChange wet cloths and
bedding
‹‹Parent’s role
ÂÂDo not punish or scold
since this stress can
make the problem worse
ÂÂRewarding the child for
each dry night (Praise,
toffee, stars etc.)
ÂÂRestrict fluids,
especially caffeinated
drinks (tea, coffee, cola
etc in the evening)
ÂÂSet alarms during the
night to wake the child
for bathroom breaks.
ÂÂMake sure that the
child stays hydrated
throughout the day so
that they aren’t thirsty
at bedtime.

Diabetes is not only sight
threatening but also life threatening
disease if not detected early and
managed well. It is a workable disease
if you catch the devil young and are
willing to change your life style. But
unfortunately in India it is developing
into an epidemic and is a real ticking
time bomb.
An estimated 40 million Indians suffer from
diabetes and, according to experts, the problem
seems to be growing at an alarming rate. By
2020, the number is expected to double and reach
epidemic proportions, even as half the number
of diabetics in the country remain undiagnosed
Worse still, diabetes has debilitating consequences
on many of the body’s vital organs if remained
unchecked and controlled, the biggest problem
being that of eye sight. .
Experts across the country consider India to be
the diabetic capital of the world and the condition
a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. However,
of more concern is the fact that awareness of the
condition’s consequences is quite low. While blood
sugars need to be controlled, patients are seldom
aware that in the long run it can affect eyes,
kidneys, heart and every single vital organ of the
body
Diabetics are 25 times more prone to blindness
when compared to non diabetics. We Indians have
a genetic predisposition for diabetes but there are
the contributing factors which precipitates early
diabetes
The eye is the most common organ to be
affected by diabetes in the long run. So it is
essential for diabetic patients to be aware of
this fact and that blindness through diabetes
can be avoided to a great extent through
regular check ups.
Diabetes patients should undergo an eye check
as soon as the condition is detected and regular
yearly checks thereafter or as frequently as the
doctor recommends. This will enable the early
detection and prevention of eye diseases through
laser and other treatments. Doctors estimate that
early detection will enable the halting or at least
the slow down of diabetes-related eye diseases.
Diabetic patients tend to ignore this problem
since the symptoms might not manifest
themselves overtly. He may go 10 years without
any obvious problems, but it might have set in
internally however, a doctor will be able to detect
the problems during regular checks and begin
remedial measures. But if the patients ignore
it, it might be too late when he actually realises.
If the problem becomes more acute and leads to
bleeding, then only surgery can set this right. The
point is all this can be avoided through awareness
and preventive measures.
‹‹Diabetes
Diabetes is a lifestyle disease and it is essential
to keep preventive aspects in mind. Family history
plays a major role in diabetes. A person stands a
40 per cent chance of getting diabetes if the father
has it, 60 per cent if the mother has it and a 90
per cent chance if both parents have it. Also, men
are more prone to diabetes than women. Its onset
can be delayed if weight is kept in check, regular
exercises and stress is minimised, it is also helpful
to keep in mind that statistics indicate diabetes

zzThere are 50% chances of eye involvement
if you have diabetes for more than 10 years.
Diabetes primarily affects the film or the retina
of the eye and if not detected and treated early
can lead to irreversible blind ness
‹‹Prevention is better than cure
Prevention is better than cure is not just
a frequently quoted statement but is actually
important for a healthy and long life If you have
any of the above predisposing factors do keep
a close watch on your blood sugar, and the early
signs of diabetes are
zzExcessive thirst
zzExcessive hunger
zzExcessive urination
zzUnusual weight loss
‹‹Some mandatory dos and don’ts
If you are already a diabetic, keep a tight control
on your blood sugar, a close watch on your diet and
shed those excessive pounds. The couched-potato
life style must change.
Have your eyes checked for diabetic changes
at least once a year even if you can see well.
Diabetes is not only sight threatening but also
life threatening disease if not detected early and
managed well. It is a workable disease if you catch
the devil young and are willing to change your life
style. But unfortunately in India it is developing
into an epidemic and is a real ticking time bomb.
It has considerable medical, social, financial
impacts. Half the battle can be won by creating
awareness of disease and learning how to live with
it. We need to have a multi-pronged approach with
diet, drugs, exercise and life style changes-all in
equal measures and as it is popularly said “Avoid
hurry, worry and curry”

‹‹Asubhaanussati
The human body is composed of Dvatimsaakar
(32 organs or components) namelyKesa (scalp hair),
Loma (body hair), Nakha (nails), Danta (teeth), Tacho
(skin), Mamsa(flesh), Nahaaru (muscle fibres), Atti
(bones), Attiminja (bone marrow), Vakkham(kidneys),
Hadayam (heart), Yakanam (liver), Kilomakam
(pancreas), Pihatam(spleen), Pappassam (lungs),
Antam (intestines), Antagunam (terminal intestine
orrectum), Udariyam (stomach), Kareesam (feces),
Maddha lungam (brain), Pittam(bile), Semham
(saliya), Prabbo (pus), Lohitam (blood), Sedo (sweat),
Medo (adipose),Assu (tears), Vasaa (muscle fat),
Khelo (earwax), Singhaanika (nasal Excreta),
Lasika(subcutaneous fluid), Mutta (urine).
To utilise these 32 components or organs of a body
as the subject matter of Dhyaana or meditation is called
Asubhaanussati. This can be achieved as follows:
1) The external attraction of the physique of
creatures deceives the fact that it iscomposed of
impurities (Dvatimsaakaara). When one realises the
impureness ofbody, its contact also is perceived as
impure.
2) The Asuddhi (impureness) of body is explicit
with its putrefaction. Hence, one shouldtry to perceive
the body in terms of its individual components in its
colour, structutre ,smell, location and thus its impurity.
3) The impurities of the body are more impure than
the place of burial because at theburial ground the
nature is pure whereas in the ever decaying body there
is no pureorgan or component.
4) The gutter carrying sewage water, giving rise
to insects and worms being impure, thebody too
undergoing a decay every moment is akin to a pit
(storage tank) of urine and faces.
5) All forms of wastes moving about the body, it is
similar to the sewage/ septic tankwhere innumerous
insects and worms dwell.
6) Being the seat of innumerable diseases this body
is the conglomeration of fevercausing ulcers which
succumbs to incurable diseases, becomes a putrefied
cadaver.
‹‹Maranaanussati
Every creature born is destined to die - to realise
this and carry out Dhyana (meditations) as follows is
called Marananussati.
1) Life is similar to an oil lamp that gets extinguished
after the consumption of oil and wick. When the life’s
fuel is exhausted death is certain. One realises his fate
by looking at the death of others before him.
2) The luckiest people in this world too have died.
Similarly I too will die one day. Deathwill overtake me.
3) Death is certain with birth just like a butcher
is eager to kill his bait - similarly deathwaits for
everybody.
4) As the sun rises only to set, similarly the death
follows to end life.
5) Just like a bubble in the water breaks, the dew
drops dry up, a line drawn on watervanishes, prey is
killed by its enemy, death is certain wherever there is
life.
6) The Arahantas endowed with the
supreme Conscience (Prajna) endowed with
utmostrighteousness and supernatural powers,
who attained enlightenment, the PacchekaBuddhas
who attained self enlightenment and the Sammaa
Sambuddha withinnumerous followers also shall die.
Then, what about an ordinary being like me?
7) The Internal and External Pacchaya (factors)
that sustain the life themselves whenderanged can
result in death. Hence, definitely we are dying every
moment!
‹‹Anapanasati Meditation
Meditation is a training to keep the mind in the
present tense, as present tense is the onlyreality in
life. Buddha has given fourty objects for meditation
which are suitable fordifferent types of people
having different mentality. Breathing is one among
the fourtyobjects, also the most useful object which
any type of person can use as an object ofmeditation.
Breathing meditation is called as 'Anapanasati'.
Here the meditator has to sitstraight with his spinal
chord in erect position using Padmaasana. Then he
shouldobserve his own normal breathing by keeping
his mind near the tip of the nose or nearabdomen.
As soon as one starts observing his own breathing
one starts getting umpteennumber of thoughts. Then
instead of observing the breathing one should start

21HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
observingthe thoughts. By that time one realises that
there are only five types of thoughts one canget while
meditating. And for that matter all human beings get
only five types ofthoughts.
Buddha names these thoughts as "Panchaneevarana"
or five obstacles of meditation. These neevaranas or
obstacles are as follows :
In Pali language
The thoughts connected
with sense organs
- Kamachchanda
Thoughts connected
with anger
- Vyaapada
Thoughts connected
with restlessness
- Uddachcha Kukkuchcha
Thoughts connected
with laziness
- Tinamidda
Thoughts connected
with doubt
- Vichikichcha
One’s meditation never starts until these
thoughts are prevented. For this Buddhahas
preached the Arakkha Bhaavana or Rakshana
Manthra which are thepreventing measures to
keep away all the five obstacles. Buddhanussati
preventsthe thoughts connected with restlessness,
laziness and doubts. Mettaanussatiprevents the
thoughts connected with anger. Asubaanussati
and Maranaanussatiprevents the thoughts
connected with sense organs. Once all the
obstacles areremoved/prevented real meditation
starts. and one gets different absorptions(Zaana)
and finally gets Enlightenment (Nibbana).‹‹Absorption (Zaana)
These are called "pancha zaans or five absorptions.
They are as follows:
1. Vithakka (Selecting the object): Buddha has given
40 objects on which meditation isperformed for
different types of people. The most appropriate
object which suits alltypes of people is breathing.
Here one can observe the breathing either near
the tip ofthe nose or on the stomach.
2. Vichara (Focussing on the object): Here one
should focus on the object.
3. Piti means happiness in the body. Ultimately it
may lead to levitation of the body.
4. Suka means happiness in the mind or rapture.
5. Ekaggatha means one pointedness on the object
of meditation with equanimity. This is the fifth
Zaana.
After this Buddha asks to change the object of
meditation .
5th Zaana object is awareness of infinite space.
6th Zaana object is awareness of infinite
consciousness.
7th Zaana object is awareness of nothingness.
8th Zaana object is awareness of neither perception
nor non-perception.
One who crosses beyond the 8th Zaana gets the
glimpse of Nibbana - the ultimate truthfor a fraction
of a second and he is called a Sothapanna, the stream
enterer who hasentered the path which leads to the
enlightenment.

22HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
Dear Readers, I am very happy to introduce to
you, a very rare personality. Before that, Kindly go
through the gist of my play and a few words about the
health care situation around us, as the background for
this interview.
Background:- In My stage play Adhunika
Asuraru, (modern demons) to observe health status
of people on earth, Dhanwantari (doctor of angels
in heaven)and Ashwini brothers ( twin doctors
in heaven ) arrive on earth. They are astonished
to observe following facts. Common people have
carelessness towards their health; a mentality not to
go to doctors, till they reach chronic stage of disease;
transport problems of remote villages and towns;
shortage of doctors; Hospitals without medical
experts; indifference of family, society and people,
towards health care of women, children and senior
citizens; self medication of people; frequent change
of medicines and doctors by people, as per the advise
of friends and relatives; an illusion that, health can be
purchased in the market as other goods and services;
misconception that, their health can never deteriorate;
and so on. They find out that, health is right of people
and duty of ruling government. They were shocked
to observe that, there is an acute shortage of medical
and diagnoising equipments; rural health care is
mismanaged by fake and inexperienced doctors and
geographical inaccessibility. The central theme and
message of my play was, though earning more and
more money was good, it should never limit our very
existence.
Present Health Scenerio:- It is very shocking
and alarming to note, the changes in lifestyle,
concentration of all efforts towards making money,
not taking nutritious food at right time and in right
quantity, contamination of environment, Air, water
and noise pollution, and diseases connected with these;
inavailability of doctors at emergencies; the distance
between doctors and patients; a heavy consultation
fees of doctors and specialists; costly medicines; arm
chair specialists, limited to their consultation rooms;
road accidents …….! Oh God where is the solution!?
------ is the exclamatory words from emotionally and
socially concerned!
suddenly we listened to one young voice from
Bangalore. “No person should die for the simple
reason that, hospital and clinic are far away. That is
way, I have opened mobile health chariot. “ This in the
voice of a 35 year old doctor, whom I met recently in
Sarjapur Bangalore and had a very fruitful dialogue,
a whole day. This doctor narrated various incidents
and his mindset, in his life, which brought him to this
stage. He is none other than Dr. Sunil Kumar Hebbi.
This young doctor with remote rural background,
is from mamdapur villege of Babaleshwar Taluk,
Vijayapura district. He has selected a noble path of low
cost or no cost Health care, including check up, service
and distribution of medicines. His unique experiences
during his childhood and younger days have shaped
him to enter a rare path of destiny.
Childhood:- About 30 years ago, his village was 45
kms away from the then Bijapur. His mother Mahadevi
was a housewife. His father Sangappa Hebbi was an
agriculturist and a medical shop owner. When this
doctor’s grand mother was seriously ill, there was
no transport between his villege and Bijapur. She
was taken by a bullock cart, with great difficulty and
suffering. As a child of 5 years, sunil had seen all this.
Mamdapur village which had no doctors for a long
period, suddenly received a primary health centre and
a doctor. That Doctor B.P Rao was a neighbourer of
sunil and became very popular with his service and
attitude. people used to call him as God. observing this
sunil felt that, there is some special thing in becoming
a doctor. There were no doctors in sunil’s family
and relations for several generations. His 5 family
members and 16 relatives had medical stores. When

sunil expressed his desire to become a doctor, all of
them were very happy. Sunil joined medical college
in Bijapur (now Vijaypura). Though he was a medical
student, he and his friends used to take free tuitions
and conduct free computer classes for poor and needy
students. In 2006 sangamesh babaleshwar motivated
sunil, to to do yeoman service in educational activities
for poor children. After completing M.B.B.S in 2007,
Sunils mind and spirit were forcing him to take action,
to bring any social change or at least to contribute
his contribution to society. In 2008 Dr. Sunil came to
Bangalore and joined a nursing home for internship,
for 1 year 3 months. Daily he witnessed 60-70 patients
and their inabilities to purchase costly medicines. He
thought. “ should I open a clinic?”. During weekends
this doctor associated himself with HELPAGE, and
participated in 6 health care camps with enthusiasm,
in Banashankari and Anekal, providing basic health
care to aged ( i.e checking blood pressure and sugar
level) in old age homes and distributed free medicines.
Like all other youngsters, Dr Sunil Kumar as a
young doctor, also dreamt of earning more money and
achieving a higher position. He joined a corporate
hospital and was earning a huge sum as his salary.
But within a year, an unforgettable incident happened
and this dream was broken and a new way of life
and commitment flashed. In the words of Dr. Sunil “
On one day in February 2010, I saw a person laid on
hosur road, severely injured in a serious accident.
He was in a pool of blood. His head was injured; his
hands and legs were damaged. He was like an orphan,
as no body was there to care him. There were many
around, who were mere silent observers and even
a few were busy in clicking their cameras. No body
rushed to help him, as they were afraid of police and
enquiry. I gave him first aid, with my kit kept in my
car and put the seriously injured in my car, with the
help of two present there and got admitted him to
the nearby hospital. Later I got a phone call from the
family members of that patient, when he recovered
due to the timely emergency Medicare. My heart was
full of joy and content. They wept, thanked and offered
to pay any amount, for having saved invaluable life of
that person. I told them, that it was my first duty as
a doctor. My mind got disturbed and I thought for a
few moments. Health care is a challenge for poor and
downtrodden. I felt and decided to do something in
this regard”. This doctor left the hefty paying job in a
corporate hospital.
Matrusiri Rural development youth
institution:- was constituted by this Doctor, in 2007 in
Bijapur and it has continued its service in Vijayapura
and was extended to Bangalore from 2008. Dr Sunil who
is the head, says “We like minded youth, of same age,
have formed this institution, to provide honest health
protection services to those, who are below poverty
line”. He has conducted health checkups of more than
30,000 needy poor patients, and provided services to
them. He charges Rs 100 from those who can afford to
pay, for basic health check up and medicines. But He
has not forgotten, to give free service to 10 to 15 patients
a day. He is diverting a portion of his income, from
his agricultural land in his village, for his noble work.
This doctor has understood problem of patients in
coming to doctors and he has taken medical facilities
to the needy people, wherever they are. In Bangalore,
Sarjapura is an I.T Hub place and it is developing
very fast. Hence building construction activities have
increased in this area. Thousands of construction
workers and labourers have been migrating. When
poor don’t seriously care for the protection of their
health, easily curable diseases also reach serious
stage. Hence is team intends to change this mentality,
and increase interest in people about their health care.
Mobile Doctor Clinic:- Dr. Sunil borrowed a car
from his friend, and after repairs, that car was got
converted in to a mobile health unit. It had Doctor’s
Travel kit, consisting of B.P apparatus, Glucometer,
Thermameter,E.C.G Machine, pulse oximetre, folding
examination table and folding chairs. Any where, the
vehicle could go, and fix equipments and start clinic.
From Face Book and other social medias, this

doctor searched and selected many non-medical
volunteers, interested in weekend social service.
This network extended and this team has reached 350
doctors on the list. At the time of commencement the
doctors who joined Dr Sunil kumar in this campaign
were, Dr. Proadeep V dentist from Kengeri, Dr.
Bhanuprakash neuro surgeon from Kumaraswamy
Layout, Dr. Ashok kumar from K.M Doddi Govt.
Hospital and Dr. Satish shindre from avenue road. In
this team dentist Dr. N Pradeep takes care of cleaning
and protection of teeth of people. Dr Bhanu Prakash
is serving senior citizens with wholeheartedness.
Nagarajan Iyer, a medical representative is
helping, in procuring supplies of medicines. Earlier
commenced in the name of Vatsalya charitable
clinic, this work is continuing, in the changed
name. low cost or no cost Health care has been given
to about 85,000 patients from the Bangalore rural area.
Now there are 1200 Non-medical volunteers and a
few medical representatives have been supplying free
medicines. In the weekend list of volunteers, there are
working women like Shweta, Shailaja Akki, House
wives like Anamika kumari. These volunteers
survey in 50-60 km radius and search for needy poor
patients. Thus based on needs, this mobile health unit
is working hard. Dr Sunil declares “ Now it Is time, to
return to this society, for whatever I have received from
this society. Though I have received encouragement
from public and volunteers, I look forward for more
support.” Sunil wants to establish charitable hospital
in Bangalore and Vijayapura. Sunil , inspired by
R.V.M foundation hospital in Banneraghatta, wants
to establish charitable hospitals in Bangalore and
Vijayapura. Sathish who is running a N.G.O., Prema
Foundation, has supported sunil from last 4 years. He
says “ Having come from low economic background, I
know the importance of education and basic health
care for the needy. Hence I have participated in 350
camps arranged by this doctor”. Industrialist Anil
Shetty remarks “many doctors think of achieving
greatness and creating record in their profession
and their earnings. But this doctor who is doing a
yeoman service to society, is totally different. He has
reestablished faith in doctors and profession”.
Memorable Incident:- 300 construction laborers
were working in the construction of a big apartment
complex in Bangalore Suddenly their skin got rashes.
Insects living in that area had spread this allergy. This
team gave titanus injuctions and through several
visits, gave treatment and cured them. This was an
unforgettable moment in the life of doctor Sunil. In
his interview Dr. Sunil Kumar Hebbi, again and again
has stressed the following points:- “ Health care is
the basic right of people and not a facility. There is
shortage of facilities in this country. we must give
health care and medical support to economically
backward people, at a low cost. That is way we have
been conducting health camps every week, in oldage
homes, slums, building construction sites, in and
around bangalore“
Dear Readers, now give your remarks. Is this
doctor special and rare!?
Alaram Therapy: An alarm devise is connected
to child’s collar and a sensor attached to child’s
undergarments, as soon as child starts urinating in
the sleep the sensor makes alarm to beep and child is
awaken.
Along with bed wetting, if a child has burning
pain while passing urine, scanty urine or frequent
passing of profuse quantities of urine, change in the
color of urine, weight loss, fever etc these need to be
investigated and a doctor should be consulted for
proper evaluation and treatment.
‹‹Homeopathy in curing bedwetting children.
Through Homeopathy bed wetting (enuresis) can
be successfully treated. A specially designed Enuresis
–Protocol, is applied in Surabhi Homeo Clinic in
treating Bedwetting. Such an approach has given us
success in many cases of Bedwetting (Enuresis).
This protocol consists 4 major points
zzUnderstanding the underlying cause for
bedwetting
zzThe unique symptoms of the child with bedwetting
problem
zzGenetic constitution of the child (Hereditary
influences, Miasm)
zzCounseling of the child and parents.
Right Homeopathy treatment not only relieves the
child from the problem of bedwetting, it also makes the
child mentally confident & helps in building a strong
immune system.

A chronic and relapsing brain disease is considered
as drug addiction which causes an individual
to compulsively use and abuse substance which
consequently changes the structure and functions of
brain in a harmful manner. Abusing any kind of drug
interferes with the person’s decision making ability
and self control also generates a strong impulse so
that a person is forced to use drugs and because of
the complexities caused in brain by substance abuse
it becomes difficult for a person to stop abusing
substances. It is not a matter of willpower to stop
abusing drugs as many people consider it because of
the deep impacts these drugs cause on brain.
Initially drugs were used for treatment of an ailment
but today’s modern world is abusing such drugs in a
quantity that is life threatening. Where smoking and
drinking has become a common problem, using and
abusing drugs to feel ‘high’ is in trend now a day. Even
being aware of the side effects of using drugs is not
helping today’s generation to stop indulging in them. It
takes medicines to treat addictions and therapies like
behavioural therapy for most patients to get them out
of addictions. But relapse can occur but that doesn’t
mean that the
treatment is
failed but that
treatment
needs to be
adjusted or
there is a need
for alternate
treatment.
Different
treatments
work for
different person because of their drug types, patterns,
amount, etc.
If we go back to the ancient times there are
mentions of ‘madira’, ‘soma rasa’, etc. and now a day
there a lot of drugs which are natural like opiates and
synthetic like opioids and many more.
‹‹How drugs interact with brain?
Drugs are chemicals, when we use drug either by
injection, eating, smoking, etc. these drugs take over
the communication system of brain and alter the
usual way the brain cells work. Different drugs works
differently because of their chemical structure. There
are two ways of drugs working in brain.
zzBy imitation of the brain’s natural chemical
messengers.
zzBy overstimulation of brain’s ‘reward circuit’.
Drugs like marijuana and heroin act as
neurotransmitters because of their chemical
structures. But these cannot imitate the natural
functions of neurotransmitters and neurons send
abnormal messages through brain which can be
harmful for both body and brain
Other drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines
they interfere with brain functioning and cause nerve
cells to release dopamine in excess amount which can
interfere with communication channels. Dopamine
neurotransmitter is associated with creating feeling
of pleasure. These drugs take dopamine control and
cause dopamine flood into our systems which causes
“HIGH” or vigorous excitement and happiness also
known as euphoria.
Our brain works as repeating the activities that
caused happiness or are healthy and teaches us to
do these activities again and again without a need to
think about it. After repeated use of such drugs brain
starts to adjust the dopamine flow. Because of toxicity
of some drugs, many neurons die which causes a
person to feel dull, depressed or just flat. Now person
needs drugs to get dopamine levels at normal and more
drugs are needed to create that ‘high’.
‹‹Drugs affect three main areas of the brain:
zzBrain Stem: From digesting food to moving blood
and breathing brain stems are in charge. It also
connects the brain with spinal cord and tells the
brain about everything that happens to the body.

zzThe Limbic System: This connects the brain
structures that are in charge of our emotional
responses. Like feeling good when we eat ice
cream. We repeat behaviours that made us feel
good.
zzThe Cerebral Cortex: It is the outer part of the
brain also known as gray matter. It’s divided into
four lobes that control specific functions. Some
areas control our senses like hearing, feeling,
seeing and tasting. And front lobe known as
frontal cortex or forebrain is linked with thinking
linked with problem solving, decision making,
planning, etc.
The abuse of drugs interfere with the normal
functioning of brain and causes changes that cannot
be reversed. Person’s judgment ability and decision
making abilities are hindered. Also these drugs alter
abuser’s behaviour, memory and learning.
‹‹What causes addiction?
There are certain factors which collectively can
predict the risk of addiction in a person.
zzBiological Factors: our genes and environmental
factors both collectively make us vulnerable to
addiction. Other mental disorders, ethnicity
and gender also accounts for risk of drug abuse
addiction.
zzEnvironmental Factors: Quality of life,
socioeconomic status, family and friends includes
in the environmental factors. More factors like
stress, peer pressure, any kind of physical or
sexual abuse can also be a factor for drug addiction.
zzDevelopment: No matter at what age you start

28HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
Recently a spiritual master has taken almost all
space of the media for his wrong doings. In the past few
days, the media are deluged with all kinds of reports
in which that particular Baba has enjoyed life in every
aspect thereafter now he landed in jail. In whatever
form of media you look at, you will find news related
to him only and till date his all round game doesn’t
seem to subsidize as the whole game is about return
on investment which has nothing to bear upon the
theme of devotion. All reports say that devotion has
been shattered by this Baba and shows him as a demon
whereas he is a proven criminal through judicial trial.
He has been on trial for past 16 years and his reach
was ever increasing at that point of time also where
no media house has put forwards reports vehemently
for bringing out the truth and saving gullible devotees.
This is neither the first case of rape by a Baba nor
the work of the media is unquestionable here major
concern is about the devotion of an individual. Why
a person starts following any person blindly in the
name of devotion or faith? Why a person is vulnerable
to exploitation in the name of religion or spirituality?
These are basic questions to think about as putting the
blame on these kind of spiritual masters will not serve
the purpose, yes the news of a Baba in scandal can
give a titillating feeling for some time and therefore
the attention of the viewer can be grabbed by news
channels however the chain of deceiving by a Baba
will continue with some other person brought into the
dock.
The most spiritually superficial people go to such
kind of Baba for getting their greed fulfilled who has
nothing to do with religion or religiousness. It has
been observed that most people with worldly desires
of getting money, a home or a job or a son or in hope
of realization of some other dreams get attached with
such Baba. If a person connects with such hopes and
dreams, then saying their faith has been shattered is
a little bit unjust as they were in some kind of give
and take relation. Devotees were paying donation
and respect in turn they would get the things which
they desired all the time. Baba was demonstrating to
give blessings where some of it gets fructified too, as
he know that it’s a matter of time where the devotees
fail in practicing patience with failing in realizing this
simple fact. So here the matter of faith got shattered
doesn’t make a logical connotation. For all those
people who make hue and cry upon fracture of faith
are getting ready for another one; it’s just that now
this shop has not to offer the stuff they want so they
will visit another shop. This syndrome has continued
since decades. It’s just that in recent times these kinds
of affair have been brought to light due to reach the
media. While saying this, the existence of true masters
cannot be totally denied. It’s the only true master
whose life gives inspiration to others duplicate to copy
lifestyle, speeches and give it a form of market.
Then there are people who posses grey matter in
abundance that gives business of religion a shape of
professionalism and wings to the spirituality. They
emphasize on the mass reach of these Babas on pretext
that every person should get the benefit of his spirit. So
now spirituality is sailing on the wings of marketing
and media. And no one is concerned of the real girth
of spirituality and few do not dare to put forward of
his individual doubts as the spirit of crowd generates
intolerance of mass acceptability. They create a level
of spirituality which has nothing to do with the real
essence of spirit and it spreads without questioning
by good management people in the form of disciple
and followers. These intelligent people are good at
exploiting the greed of fearful people. These gullible
people repeat universal understanding that things
will happen according to time however they put every
effort in greed of getting more than allotted and before
time. The market is flooded with so called Babas who
are now well informed and psychologically trained for
pitching his prospect or customer.
You need to rethink when someone says trust is
broken by deeds of another individual. Everyone
knows faith is unshakable and unbreakable and if it
happens so then it’s not faith. You know a tree of jack
fruit can never give mango. Knowing should be the
basis of this trust. Trust is in like of that child whose
father when fly him high in the air and the child keeps
on laughing as he is certain that when he will come
down his father will catch him definitely. Which kind
of faith and trust is getting talked about where doubt
prevails in mind, greed is lurking and fear has made a
place in the system.
Within a short span of time people will start
searching for another Baba and a few of them would
be in connection of others too so they will leave here
and connect there instantly. They will keep themselves
vulnerable to exploitation and if they get trapped
badly they will blame everything available on this
earth except looking inside. So please check your own
system of thinking, meditatively. If you will be more
aware only conscious master will touch your life or
else if you are in sombre state any unreached master

Exploring the Mudra Concept
YOGA
in your
HANDS
Part-3
BREATHING,
VISUALIZATION,
AND AFFIRMATIONS TO
ENHANCE THE MUDRAS
he effect of a mudra can be immensely intensified
with thebreath. This is why it is very important to know what breathingdoes. When you understand the following principles, then youcan influence the effect of a mudra according to your own needs.
zzPay attention to a symmetrical posture and hold your armsabout one inch away from your body. Even this position alonebrings a sense of inner equilibrium and harmony as it regulatesthe activity of the nervous system and hormonal glands.
zzIn addition to carbon dioxide, we also discharge expendedenergy on the subtle level when we exhale deeply. This is whyyou should always exhale vigorously several times at thebeginning of a mudra. Make room for what you want toachieve.
zzAlways lengthen the little pause after inhaling and afterexhaling by several seconds. This is the most important aspectof the breathing process. The inner powers are developedduring the pauses—on every level.
zzWhen you practice a mudra to calm yourself, then slow yourbreathing.
zzWhen you practice a mudra to refresh yourself, then intensifyyour breathing.
zzThe optimal quality of breathing is achieved when the breath is slow, deep, rhythmic, flowing, and fine.
At the beginning of a mudra meditation, exhale
vigorously several timesand then let the breath become deeper and slower. You now have threepossibilities:
First: Focus on your hands and fingers, perceive
the gentle pressure where they touch each other;
Second: While inhaling, you can press the fingertips
together a bit more and let go of the pressure when exhaling;
Third: You can do it the other way around and
apply a bit more pressure while exhaling and let go of the pressure when inhaling.
Every variation has its special effect. The
first variation centers, createsinner equilibrium,
and builds up strength in general. The second
variationstrengthens the will and refreshes. The third
variation calms and relaxes.Try out these variations
and feel the difference yourself ! It is possible thatyou
won't immediately feel the effect, but it is still there.
The outer circumstances of our lives usually
shape themselvesaccording to our imagination and
the contents of our minds. So we havethe possibility
of shaping our inner images in such a way that we
enjoy life, experience success in our work, and have
relationships on a loving andunderstanding basis. It
is very important to create an unshakable faith and be
filled with both fervor and serenity to accompany our
self-made images. We need to create little experiences
of success for ourselves, since whatfunctions in a
small way will also succeed on a larger scale. We can
slowlybuild and develop this confidence. Just imagine
what would happen if agreat many people would
simultaneously imagine a beautiful world withrich
flora, content animals, happy human beings, and
firmly believe thatthis is possible. Join in—then there
will already be two of us!
If we can clearly express what we do not want and
definitively formulateour wishes and needs, this can
already be the beginning of a neworder in life. For
many years now, I have worked with affirmations—
sometimes more, sometimes less. Time and time
again, their astoundingeffects have astonished me.
For example, my kitten disappeared one day. Irepeated
the same sentence over and over the entire day: "With
divinestrength and power, I find my kitten again."
Toward evening, I simplyknew where my kitten was.
The woman was completely perplexed whenI claimed
that my cat was in her garage, but it was true. It is so
simple, andsome people even find it a bit naive. But
things that are particularly simpleand naive usually
have the greatest effective power.
The same principle applies to affirmations as it
does to visualizations.Say them full of faith, fervor,
and serenity. You can say them one to threetimes,
during or after the meditation. You can also pause
for a momentduring the day and speak your
affirmation in a quiet or a loud voice. Makeuse of this
wonderful possibility and talk yourself into what you
reallywant—what is good for you.
If you want to get rid of something stubborn, a
negation can also be helpful.Speak it at the beginning,
while you are vigorously exhaling. For example,"This
hatred (or resentment, feeling of guilt, pain, fear, desire
to smoke, etc.)will immediately disappear and dissolve
itself"

30HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
As you grow old, your low back pain grows with
never ending pathology. You did not have back pain
when you were a child and not may be around your
teen age but since you entered your 20’s and 30’s the
low back pain may be getting worse day by day. I am
talking about chronic low back pain and not due to
some severe pathology or injury.
Almost everyone suffers with low back pain in
their lifetime. For some people it is terrible & for some
it is part of their life. Many people live with low back
pain. It is a common painful problem which affects
your lower portion of your spine (back bone). Almost
10 million Indians suffer with this every year despite
the best diagnostic tools available, modern medicines
may not be in position to help patients with low back
pain. Unfortunately still today people struggle with
low back pain and live with pain. And whatever they
do leaves them in pain.
Moreover, such patients spend lot of money to
manage their pain with different pain killers and
try to avoid surgery. Now days, we see that people
are aware about their condition & search for an
alternative medicine and they find Ayurveda’s non-
surgical approach to various back pain issues is their
destination. Indeed, Ayurveda has shown ways to
manage many chronic ailments including lifestyle
disorders very effectively without causing any
discomfort to the patient.
‹‹What is low back pain?
The lower back is a fascinating and intricate part of
the body that is home to the colon, intestines, uterus,
bladder, prostate, kidney and spine. Pain in any one
of these areas can masquerade as a back ache. For
example, pain in your colon can feel like lower back
pain. Colic, inflammation, and irritation of the colon
is a common cause of lower back pain in Ayurveda.
Flushing stagnant bowels can relieve this type of pain
in your lower back. (Low Back Pain) is pain felt in the
lower back that usually originates from the muscles,
nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.
Let me now tell you about how Ayurveda looks at
low back pain - Ayurveda holds that LBP (katigraha) is
a result of vitiation of one the principle physiological
functions - ‘vata’. Back pain arises when vata in the
back gets aggravated & may damage the surrounding
tissues. ‘vata’ controls & directs the body movements.
Ayurveda calls it “kati-shoola” kati means-
lower back & shoola refers to pain. if you
know Sanskrit, you will easily understand
this terminology, under ‘kati-shoola’-
all types of low back pain falls, or ‘kati-
shoola’ can be an umbrella term under
which other modern terminologies seems
to fall in - such as - lumbar - spondylosis or
lumbago.
‹‹ADVANTAGES OF AYURVEDIC
TREATMENT IN LOW BACK PAIN
In managing chronic low back
pain, Ayurveda has upper hand. Ayurveda has a
unique understanding of physiology, pathology and
management of low back pain. Arrests the process
of degeneration & helps in regeneration of soft tissue
damages. Prevention of disc prolapse or disc ruptures.
Ayurvedic drugs do not produce hyperacidity, stomach
or duodenal ulcer etc
‹‹CAUSES OF LOW BACK PAIN (KATISHOOLA/
KATIGRAHA)
Due to lack of physical activity, improper posture of
spine, sitting wrongly and moreover sitting improperly
for long time may affect your lower back. This disturbs
your routine & causes pain. Other issues such as disc
prolapse, bulge & sciatica are other common causes of
severe low back ache.
zzUnwise physical activities - binding over too
sharply, lifting things unwisely.
zzExaggerated physical activities - too much of
bending, lifting or twisting.
zzLess physical activities - improper posture.
zzassociated with osteoporosis, OA & other female
related issues.
zzExternal trauma - fall, accident or injury.
zzbeing overweight.
zzWearing high heels or uncomfortable shoes etc.
‹‹WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? AYURVEDA INDEED
1. Understand your pain beyond a feeling-
Ayurveda has a different perspective to your pain.
Ayurvedic theory is to understand the pain beyond
just a feeling. You need to look deeper into your pain.
Many people because of severe pain do not get to know
their underlying pathology and keep taking pain
killers for many years. This is wrong and brings more
inflammation and pain. Pain is just a message send to
us by the deeper problem of our low back which says
to us that we are using our low back improperly in an
unhealthy way.
Our toxic lifestyle creates an environment in our
body to accumulate more toxins which imbalance our
dosha – Vata. Vata is body energy responsible for all
body functions, movements and activities. So take a
step back and understand what wrong you are doing
which is increasing your Vata. And try to correct that.
Remember taking pain killers is not the solution.
Removing pain from its root is the remedy.
2. Visit an Ayurvedic Vaidya, take Panchakarma
and Ayurvedic formulations
If you have been experiencing
low back pain for a while now
and it is disturbing your day
today activities then you need
to see an Ayurvedic doctor who
is experienced and exposed to
treating such problems very well.
Everyone’s body is different and
thus the pathology and treatment
plan- Ayurveda too believes in
this.

AYURVEDIC SOLUTION
FOR LOW BACK P AIN

31HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017

32HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
Ayurvedic doctor may first take a proper history
of your illness and diagnose it according to Ayurveda
principles. If the diagnosis is proper then treatment
would be fruitful. So tell your Vaidya how much you
can tell about your health issues related too low back
pain and even other health issues. This will help your
Vaidya to understand the pathology involved and based
on that treatment will be planned.
The treatment may have Panchakarma (cleansing
procedures), some oral medicines, external supportive
therapies, Ayurvedic medicated oils, dietary and
lifestyle suggestion and few home remedies too.
3. What you should expect in
Panchakarma in low back pain
Prepare yourself for unique natural
cleansing procedures. Panchakarma are
five various methods of body cleansing
and removing aggravating dosha’s out.
It will require may be an admission to
the Ayurveda hospital or frequent visit if
you do not want an admission. So choose
a clinic which is near to your house and have all the
facilities to offer you these cleansing procedures. Read
the following steps further-
a. Agni balance- First your Agni will be corrected.
Agni is very important to burn all those toxins in your
gut which are triggering your pain. Also, a balanced
Agni is a sign of good health. So take those oral herbal
mixtures given to your to balance your Agni.
b. Snehana karma- After removing digestive
toxins and seeing that there is no Agni related issues,
then your body should be lubricated with ghee and oil
internally and externally to help loosen up your toxins
for easy expulsions.
c. Swedana Karma- Along with this, fomentation
will be performed which is going to help you a lot
with your pain. Low back pain is best managed by
Ayurvedic fomentation procedures. Fomentation is
also useful in relieving pain, restricted movement in
low back region. It can be done in entire body or in
affected part of the body like only low back etc. alone.
Among the different forms of Ayurvedic fomentation
procedures, Avagaha Sweda, Pizhichil, Nadi Sweda,
Patra Pinda Sweda, Pinda Sweda, and Upanaha
Sweda, Kati Basti may be performed efficiently in Kati
Shoola. These therapies may range between 3 – 6 weeks
and can expect maximum recovery with in this period.
Duration may vary further based on the underlying
cause So get on to this, they are your pain killers.
d. Virechana- And here comes the final step
where you will undergo body cleansing via loose
motion (Virechana). Virechana has an important
role in chronic low back pain. In Vata imbalance
most of the Ayurvedic ancient authors mentioned
non-complicated, easy purgation (Mridu Virechana).
Follow the procedure as instructed by your Vaidya. By
this time your pain will be half gone and you will feel
much better. Your Vaidya may give castor oil to drink
for daily purgation therapy in a low dose to help you
not collect those pain toxins.
e. Ayurvedic Enemas (Basti)- For chronic low
back pain, another panchakarma is taking Basti
(Nirooha and Anuvasana Basti) regularly. This will
be a 1-2 hour of procedure. Follow the instructions
properly. Aurveda offers a unique anal theraphy
called ‘Basti’ - enemas for managing ‘vata’ energy in
the body & thus, help to manage your LBP. The liquid
medication is given through your anal route. there
is a growing evidence that medicines given through
mouth is not the best route to give drugs in conditions
like - neurological issues, intestinal problems & live
disorders. So get these Ayurvedic enemas regularly.
‹‹BENEFITS OF VIRECHANA AND BASTI IN

Let’s play a game ... say if I say you all a word and
you need to imagine the situation... so the word is
ABUSE – after hearing this word the first thing that
you may have imaged is a someone has been poorly
treated, violence or misuse of something, ok now let’s
go to another word... say SUBSTANCE ABUSE – what
do you image, someone who takes drugs, alcohol on a
daily basis. Substance Abuse is defined as illegal, non-
medical use of a limited number of substances (most
of them being drugs), which have property of altering
the mental state in the ways that are considered by
social norms and defined by statue to be inappropriate,
undesirable, harmful, threatening, or at minimum
cultural alien. It often includes self administration
without medical supervision particularly in large
doses.
Drugs that are most often associated with it include
alcohol, methaqualone, cannibas, benzodiapiens, and
many more. Globally, around 300 million people have
found to use one or other illicit substance.
There are gamut of reasons of substance. It not
only include personal or individual problems but it
also includes the society, culture and the ease of drug
availability, have also an important role to play. On
the other hand people site different reasons for using
different kind of drugs example, say drug” X “someone
will use it to improve their performance, while someone
else will use it to overcome depression. Certain risk
factors that are most commonly attributed to initiate
substance abuse include chaotic, socialisation factors,
poor school performance and peer pressure.
Effects of substance abuse range from mild ones
such as hunger, anxiety, digestive problems to chronic
disease of heart, lungs etc. Prolonged use can also be
fatal. The most prevalent form of substance use is
alcoholism. It depresses the brain, decreases the body
control on muscles and their co-ordination
Withdrawal from alcohol when followed by
malnutrition may lead to a life threatening condition
called delirium. Delirium is a state of mind
characterised by restlessness, illusions, fever and
other disorders. Marijuana with its active ingredients
contains more cancer causing chemicals than tobacco
smoke. While use of
cocaine has gone
down, but it is
still prevalent i n
developed nations. It has both short term and long
term effects, which includes like paranoia, stroke to
heart, lung, and kidney damage. Contrastingly use of
Heroin has increased which triggers the components
og HIV/AIDS, tetanus infection.
Early recognition is imperative for successful
treatment and family support is required to play
a crucial role, symptoms ones need to watch for
includes impulsivity, aggression, forgetfulness,
declining grades, frequent lying and avoiding social
gatherings. Treatment includes individual and family
therapy, group therapy, spiritual and religious based
intervention and medical management. However, since
drug abuse often start in adolescence one must focus
on abuse prevention efforts in school and community.
Increasing communication between parents and
children decreases the risk of substance abuse among
children.
Treatment goals differ from patient to patient
and over time and may need to be reframed as the
treatment progresses. Traditionally, the primary goal
of treatment was to achieve permanent abstinence.
However, this goal may remain elusive and alternate
goals have to be pursued for some. In this sub-group,
intervention is directed towards decreasing the
harmful consequences of continued drug use. Such an
effort is practical and attainable, and is called “harm
minimisation”. Strategies for harm minimisation are
discussed later. The other goal pursues improvement of
physical, psychosocial and occupational functioning.
Goals may also be classified as immediate, short-
term and long-term goals. Immediate goals may
be completion of detoxification, intervention of
psychosocial and medical crisis. Short-term goals may
include management of medical and psychiatric co-
morbidity and re- integration with family. Long-term
goals consist of prevention of relapse, re-integration
into the society, occupational rehabilitation and
improvement in overall quality of life.
zz Total abstinence
zzHarm minimization
zzImprovement of health, social, occupational
functions and
zzImproved quality of life.
Psychoeducation is the first step in the management
of substance abuse. Subsequent to it, depending on
the motivation level of the client, the treatment is
decided. It is important to understand where the
client stands at that moment in terms of his/
her motivation for treatment. The best model
is to use holistic treatment package formulated
by team of health professionals including
psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social
workers, general physicians, yoga therapists and
trained spiritual and religious chaplains.

CHIKUNGUNYA-
THE DISEASE
THAT BENDS U
Chikungunya is relatively a rare viral fever
that is caused by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes especially the daytime-biting. Recently it has resurfaced in many parts of our state. It causes high fever with sometimes joint pain and rashes on the body. It is important to exclude other conditions like Dengue before diagnosing it.
The name of this disease ‘Chikungunya’ is derived
from the Makonde word that means -”that which bends up” and is in reference to the stooped posture that develops due to the arthritic symptoms of the disease.
The first outbreak of the disease was seen in the
year 1952, in the Makonde plateau of Africa. It usually occurs in tropical areas of the world. Around the world its outbreaks have been reported in Central & South Africa, India, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
‹‹Chikungunya in India
Its first outbreak in India was in the year 1963,
in Calcutta. Since which there have been sporadic outbreaks during December 2005 where more that 1, 80,000 reported cases of Chikungunya in south India. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have been severely affected by the disease this time. More than 36 000 cases have been reported in Karnataka alone, with Gulbarga district topping with 17 000 cases. Other affected districts include Mysore, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad, Tumkur, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar and Bijapur.
‹‹Causes
Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes aegypti
mosquito bites which carry the chikungunya virus. Aedes aegypti, commonly known as the Yellow Fever Mosquito, is a mosquito that can host the dengue fever, yellow fever viruses, & chikungunya(and other diseases as well).
Fig 3. Aedes aegypti mosquito & its life cycle
Aedes aegypti is considered the primary vector
forthese diseases. The mosquito can be recognized by white markings, although other mosquitoes may have only slightly different patterns. The mosquito is most frequently found in the tropics;
‹‹Chikungunya Virus
Chikungunya Virus, also known as Buggy Creek
Virus. The virus belongs to the Family -Togoviridae, and the Genus is Alpha virus. Till date there has been no reported direct person-to-person spread.
The mosquitos that cause infection due to the Chikungunya virus in Africa and Asia are the same mosquitoes that cause yellow fever and dengue fever in many parts of the world. Hence many parts of the world could be affected by the Chikungunya virus.
Fig 2. Alpha virus.
‹‹Symptoms
The disease manifests
1 to 12 days after the bite of the mosquito. The symptoms and signs include the following
Fever (> 40 C, 104 F), Headache, Joint pain (or arthralgia),
Arthritis affecting multiple joints
that can be debilitating, Swelling of Joints, Rash,
Sometimes there maybe infection of the conjunctiva of the eye and some photophobia., Chills, Nausea, Vomiting, Bleeding or hemorrhage.
‹‹Diagnosis
Some typical clinical symptoms to be done are:
zzRoutine blood count to look at platelets as sometimes the platelet count may fall.
zzBlood Serology for detection of antigens or antibiotics.
zzIgM capture ELISA to help distinguish the disease from dengue fever.
‹‹Treatment
There has been no effective vaccine developed
to prevent Chikungunya. To relieve symptoms of fever and joint pain the drug commonly used is Paracetamol. Rest is indicated during acute joint symptoms. Movement and mild exercise may improve stiffness and morning joint pains.
In unresolved arthritis that does not respond to aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Chloroquine Phosphate (250 mg/day) has given some promising results.
‹‹Prevention
zzKeeping our surroundings clean & healthy.

zzEliminate standing water in low spots, ditches,

zz Empty weekly or remove receptacles that collect

zzElimination of stagnant water at home, schools

zzUsing mosquito screens or nets in non Air-

zzSpraying insecticides like Microbial insecticides,
especially Bti (

zzIt is importantto report immediately about the
diseaseto the nearest health care centres.
Serious& immediate action should be taken
by health authorities & corporation/municipal
authorities while supplying water . If any leakage or
breakage reported it should be immediately attended.
Grampanchayat/town panchayat
authorities should take care of stagnant
water around drinking water sources
like borewells, tanks etc.
‹‹Myths about Chikungunya
Most of the people when first heard
of Chikungunya have always been mistaken with the recently occurred Bird flu which was caused by Chicken
or the other birds belonging to the same family. In the case of bird flu the carrier is the bird where as in chikungunya the carrier is a mosquito. Chickungunya is in no way connected to chicken or other birds which are used widely across the country as a non vegetarian diet.
It is also misunderstood with Dengue fever which
is more fatal than Chikungunya. Here the carrier of the disease is mosquito in both cases but the disease causing viruses are different.
Some of the fake doctors & quacks have claimed
that they can cure Chikungunya. So far no antiviral or antibiotic vaccine or other medicines have been found. The disease is self vanishing.
‹‹Conclusion
The disease is not life threatening, but those
affected could be physically weak for a fairly long time. before recovery First, unlike dengue, it is not fatal, but self-limiting (it vanishes by itself). Most patients recover fully from Chikungunya virus infection. They get better after a few days, however sometimes joint pain can persist for a longer period after the other
symptoms have disappeared. Some deaths have been reported in a few countries but this may have been due to the inappropriate use of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs. So proper medications & regular follow up should be done.
Every problem has a solution.
Ones intelligence lies in finding solution to that problem.

Role of Agni in
Dysfunctional
uterine bleeding
Agni mahabhuta is the generator of energy
in the body, luster, power of transformation,
understanding and metabolism .Excess fire in
the body results In build up of heat .Naturally
deficient heat results in feeling of being cold As
heat builds in the body there is need to eliminate
excess .Hence the body sweats urinates more,
stools become looser, and menstruation is
eliminated regularly, luster of the skin increases
and eyes shine brighter. Mind becomes sharper
focused and intellect strengthens if fire
increases more than required by the body there
are negative consequences skin erupts in red
rashes , eyes become blood red, mind becomes
intense , tissues become inflamed and there
may be fever .A lack of fire in the body results
in loss of luster in the skin takes on a grey or
pale tone and metabolism slows down In the
digestive system food is poorly digested new
information is not grasped by the mind As the
body tries on to hold heat sweating urination
bowel and menstrual elimination all decrease.
Pitta dosha contains both fire and water- fire
dominating .Hence vitiation of fire will ultimately
result in vitiation of pitta .Pitta remains healthy
if fires of the body all looked after well. If agni is
allowed to extinguish, it takes away life.As long as it
is conserved it yields long life without disease .Agni
serves as a root cause of diseases if impaired.
In DUB/Dysfunctional uterine bleeding /Abnormal
uterine bleeding in PCOS , due to low metabolism in
the tissues / dhatwagni mandya the lymph, plasma
and blood tissues carry toxins get deposited outside
the entrance of channels of the tissues giving rise
to an artificial and unwanted deposits in the tissues
creating a feeling of increase in the tissue elements
– plasma, lymph tissue /Rasa tissue and blood tissue
/Rakta tissue in the endometrium of the uterus and
produce excess flow during the menstrual cycle.
When does Agni get impaired?
Correct Dysfunctional uterine bleeding in PCOS the Ayurvedic way

37HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
Agni gets impaired on deficient consumption of
food / absolute fasting indigestion , over consumption
of food ,irregular diet , unsuitable food , dry, cold
,contaminated food ,emaciation due to chronic illness
,change of place and climate and suppression of
natural urges. When impaired, Agni loses its capacity
to digest even light food .This disturbance makes the
undigested food acidic and toxic and is termed as ama
‹‹How does disordered metabolism /Agni in the
endometrium cause DUB in PCOS
DUB is because of disordered metabolism/agni
mahabhuta in the endometrium of subjects who have
PCOS. When the metabolism is disordered it can
cause decreased endometrial vaso constriction, fragile
vessels and defective haemostatic processes and so
no vascular haemostatic plug formation, leading to
defective control of the volume of blood lost during
menstruation
if Agni mahabhuta /fire increases more there are
negative consequences like skin erupts in red rashes
,eyes become blood red, mind becomes intense , tissues
become inflamed and there may be fever and bleeding
disorders.DUB or Abnormal uterine bleeding is a
condition that causes vaginal bleeding other than the
regular menstrual cycle .Though very common in the
initial and fag end of the menstrual cycle life it can
also occur in woman who have imbalanced endocrine
system due to fluctuations of Agni mahabhuta which
can cause sporadic bleeding, heavy bleeding and
spotting .Spotting is bleeding that is lighter than a
normal menstrual cycle
‹‹The imbalances that cause DUB can also be
the complication of medical condition or due
to medications itself.
zzIn conditions like PCOS, endometriosis (-uterine
lining grows outside the uterus) there can be
heavy bleeding during regular menstrual cycle
because of rasa and rakta dhatwagni impairment.
zzUterine polyps/ small tag like growths that occur
within the uterus heavily influenced by kapha
bioenergy composed of small blood vessels in the
polyps can cause DUB. This condition can arise
due to Rasa/lymph, blood/Rakta and Mamsa/
muscle dhatwagni impairment
zzUterine fibroids/ small growths that occur within
the uterus uterine lining or uterine muscle can
cause bleeding due to derangement of Rasa, Rakta
and Mamsa dhatwagni.
‹‹Recognize symptoms of DUB;
zzHeavy menstrual bleeding
zzBleeding with many /large clots
zzbleeding lasting for more than 7 days
zzbleeding that occurs less than 21 days from the last
cycle
zzSpotting, bleeding between periods, breast
tenderness, and bloating feeling in the body/
abdomen.
‹‹Severe DUB symptoms
Dizziness ,fainting ,weakness, low BP, increased
heart rate, pale skin pain passing large clots, soaking a
pad every hour .
‹‹Why is bleeding erratic:
All three dosha bioenergy operate in such a way
that one balances the performing effect of the other
to maintain the life activity. When Agni is normal
Avalambaka kapha provides the sowmya guna sneha
to cells and tissues .It forms the chyle/ lymph and
blood plasma by its varying proportion of soma guna.
Endometrial growth by kapha bioenergy –Rasa and
rakta dhatu is tempered in a healthy cycle by pitta –
pachaka pitta, Sadhaka pitta, brajaka and ranjaka in
the pitta phase .Pitta exists in this phase to keep the
endometrium inside your uterus to feed a fertilized
egg .Once brajaka pitta bioenergy drops of when
not pregnant you get the period but if brajaka pitta
is ,because of low metabolism /mandagni like in
subjects who have PCOS your period sort of just falls
out randomly because the process was incomplete and
kapha is not tempered by pitta properly.
To define anatomically the Functional layer of
the uterus is the one that is entirely expelled out
and reconstructed at each menstrual cycle. A highly
complex system of spiral arteries, capillary networks
and plexuses and veins venous lakes and arterio
venous anastomosis constitutes its blood supply. Spiral
arteries are small arteries which temporarily supply
blood to the endometrium/inner wall of the uterus
during the pitta phase of the menstrual cycle .The
spiral arteries are converted for utero placental blood
flow during pregnancy. These special little spirals
act like control valve for bleeding once your period
start and also provide a blood supply to the growing
endometrium .If these spirals don’t develop properly
there is no control mechanism in the endometrium.
Regardless of the presence or absence of hypoxia
in the menstrual endometrium vaso constriction of
endometrial vessels at the time of menstruation will
contribute significantly to increased menstrual blood
loss.
‹‹Signs of endometrium conducive for
implantation or normal menstrual bleeding
zzTrilaminar appearance structure of the endometrial lining
zz Smooth contours should not be any structural impediments to implantation
zz Good blood supply to the deeper layers of the endometrium,
zzA calm and chilled out uterus,
zzThick and juicy lining that means correct tissue structures and right receptors
zzOptimal pancha bhutik conglomeration
zzA friendly immune environment
‹‹Failure to ovulate:
Ovulation is the release of an egg or ovum which
may then be fertilized by a sperm cell or dissolved during menstruation. If You do not ovulate it means that your endometrium is not tempered by enough pitta so the endometrium fed by only kapha makes things grow boobs. But endometrium starts to lose after

MBSR is a standardized program designed to
reduce stress and manage difficult emotions through training in mindfulness. Mindfulness refers to a particular type of attention focused on the present moment, nonjudgmental awareness, and acceptance of that experience with a stance of openness and curiosity. It includes both formal practice (mindful movement, the body scan, sitting meditation) and informal practice. Mindfulness in contemporary psychology has been adopted as an approach for
increasing awareness and responding skilfully to mental processes that contribute to emotional distress and maladaptive behavior. Much of the interest in the clinical applications of mindfulness has been sparked by the introduction of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).Research has demonstrated that such interventions alleviate suffering associated with physical, psychosomatic and psychological disorders, and improve quality of life. MBSR program is likely to result in coping better with symptoms, improved mental health, improved overall well-being and quality of life and enhanced health outcomes for people with chronic medical disease, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy prevents depressive relapse.
Mindfulness is a technique which includes brining
one’s complete attention to the present experience on a moment to moment basis.Non- judgmental attitude is the key to mindfulness technique. It means that the phenomenon that enters individual’s cognitions, emotions and sensations are observed carefully but are not evaluated as good/bad, true/false, important/ unimportant etc.Mindfulness requires or allows individuals to be aware of their surroundings, to develop a sense of sensitivity in perceiving every moment, and enabling them to accept stressful situations, instead of avoiding them. By being aware of the inner state of our minds during mindfulness, people can be trained to accept difficult situations in their lives without much resistance. Equipping individuals to deal with life challenges/stressful situations by accepting them and being aware of them is the key to mindfulness. It is an effective technique to learn to deal life stressful issues in adaptive way.
‹‹Clinical Implications Of Mindfulness Based Psychotherapy
In the last 25 years, mindfulness and interventions
based on it has become the focus of considerable attention for a large community of clinicians and researchers. Mindfulness has been described as a process of bringing a certain quality of attention to moment-by-moment experience. Mindfulness in contemporary psychology has been adopted as an approach for increasing awareness and responding skillfully to mental process that contribute to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviors in the form of symptoms. Much of the interest in the clinical applications of mindfulness has been sparked by the introduction of Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction (MBSR), a manualizedf treatment program originally developed for the management of chronic pain. Segal, Williams and Teasdale ( 2002) developed Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy ( MBCT) a relapse prevention program in depression and has been useful in the management of OCD also. MBCT integrates mindfulness with the emphasis of treatment on acceptance, change, integrating spiritual component of mindfulness into traditional cognitive behavior therapies.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a
structured group program that employs mindfulness meditation to alleviate suffering associated with physical, psychosomatic and psychiatric disorders. The program, non-religious and non-esoteric, is based upon a systematic procedure to develop enhanced awareness of moment-to-moment experience of perceptible mental processes. The approach assumes that greater awareness will provide more veridical perception, reduce negative affect and improve vitality and coping. Mindfulness based psychotherapy has been used in hosts of medical and psychiatric conditions. Recent research points to a useful therapeutic role for mindfulness in a host conditions like chronic pain, insomnia, substance abuse, in the prevention of depression and managing anxiety. Recent research suggests that mindfulness based psychotherapy can be used to prevent suicidal behavior from recurring in cases of severe mental illness. It has been found useful in the management of panic disorder, OCD, anger, impulse control dysfunction, ADHD etc.It has been a technique to improve general well being. Mindfulness has been found to be effective in improving attention/ concentration and memory also. Linehan’s Dialectical Behavior Therapy for the management of borderline personality disorder involves the core element of mindfulness for emotional regulation. Recent models of psychotherapy like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy also involves the element of mindfulness. Mindfulness is also effective in the following areas:
zzEnhance creativity
zzEmotional regulation
Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction

Urge surfing a term coined by Alan Marlatt is used
in the relapse prevention in substance abuse. Urge surfing also involves the element of mindfulness. Mindfulness works on the principles of exposure and principle of habituation. Other hypotheses that are used to explain the mechanism of mindfulness are principle of diffusion which involves the distancing the patients/clients from the stream of recurring negative thoughts without attempting to change the thoughts themselves. Another hypothesis called Differential Activation Hypothesis given by Teasdale et al (2002) explains the mechanism behind mindfulness. In studying patients with the history of relapse in depression, they found that often transient negative moods leads to negative thought pattern which spiraled in full blown depressive episodes. Through mindfulness, these patients learned to become aware and identify early, their transient negative moods which for them automatically led to negative thoughts culminating in a relapse. Mindfulness helped the patients to decenter themselves from automatic negative thoughts and to disengage from ruminating through acceptance of them as mere thoughts and not needing to identify themselves totally with the thought patterns hence preventing relapse.
Mindfulness brings cognitive changes, involves
teaching self-management skills and relaxation. It
should be remembered that mindfulness induces relaxation but the purpose is not to induce relaxation but to reach non-judgmental observation of current situation which might include automatic arousal, racing thoughts, muscle tension and other phenomena incompatible with relaxation. It teaches the acceptance of thoughts, feelings, sensations and other bodily phenomena without trying to change, escape or avoid them.
‹‹How to Practice Mindfulness
It involves four basic steps. Ideally it should be
practiced with sitting on a chair with eyes lightly closed. One of the stage called “Body scanning” can be done ideally lying down. The four steps/stages:
1. Observing the breath just observe without labeling them as good or bad.
2. Observing the body sensations like pain, itching, or any other sensation without reacting.
3. Observing various sounds in the environment or even internal sounds like one’s breath, heart beat etc again without labeling.
4. Observing one’s thoughts and emotions just as events without reacting.
‹‹Conclusion
MBSR has become of the major psychological
interventions in many medical and psychiatric disorders. It is used as a mode of treatment and relapse prevention strategy in mood and substance abuse disorders and enhancing well-being. There is a strong need that MBSR be included in the treatment package of psychiatric and medical disorders. Health professionals need to be trained in this increasingly common and empirically validated mode of intervention.

Not from a Doctor
But from the pen of an Actor
When I was going through the list of important
days and festivals in September, I was amazed to find
a no of activities directly connected with health care
and Indian festivals which also had health content. Let
me share this with you.
National Nutrition week is from 1
st
to 7
th
:-
Nutrition is a focal point of health and well being.
It allows you to be strong, provides you with the
energy to do the thnings and makes you look and
feel good. According to WHO.”Nutrition is the intake
of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary
needs”. Nutrition is an issue of survival, Health and
development for current and succeeding generations.
Eating right is not merely meant for people, who want
to loose weight or want to get back in shape. But it
should be incorporated in everyone’s lifestyle to keep
diseases at bay and stay fit. As the saying goes, “you are
what you eat”. Good nutrition combined with a regular
physical activity, is the corner stone of good health.
Healthy children learn better. People with adequate
nutrition are more productive. On the other hand, poor
nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased
vulnerability to disease, impaired physical and
mental development, and reduced productivity.“Good
nutrition prepares healthy individuals. It eventually
leads to a healthy nation. Food is made up of specific
nutrients -proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins,
minerals and water, all of which are necessary for
life. Growth body function and tissue repair. Artificial
sweeteners contain, sugar, caffeine and flavors which
do not contain any nutrients and can be harmful. The
concentrated vitamins, minerals, sugars and proteins
contained in raw juices are quickly absorbed into the
bloodstream. Hence they place minimum strain on
the digestive system. Calcium is essential for the bone
health.Rich sources of calcium, are milk and milk
products, green leafy vegetables, and eggs.
Nutrition Tips:-Eat fresh foods with the minimum
of processing. Eat raw fruits and vegetables, whenever
possible. If you need to cook them, use as little water as
possible. Because many nutrients are destroyed by heat
or boiled water Eat fruits and vegetables with skins
(apart from carrots, which can absorb toxins from the
soil) wash them thoroughly first. Don’t cut, wash or
soak fruits and vegetables, until you are ready to eat
them.Prefer traditional, home made foods, against fast
food. Avoid replacing meals with snack foods. Limit
consumption of sugar and unhealthy processed foods.
World Coconut day is celebrated on 2
nd

September:-. This is a multipurpose fruit, an
essential ingredient for south India cooking. Green
coconut water, works as a hydrating fluid for the body,
when someone is dehydrated. This is a refreshing,
unpolluted, nature’s, natural, pure drink. Carbon
obtained from burning of coconut husks is used in gas
mark production, to filter out, toxic substances in the
air.
5
th
September is teacher’s day in India. A good
teacher has greater influence in shaping the life,
physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual
personality of an individual, even more than his/
her parents. Teachers inspire, motivate, develop us,
showing the right path of light. They take us from the
darkness of ignorance, towards light of knowledge.
They are capable to influence and mould a student’s
life positively.
6
th
is the national read a book day. Reading
improves memory and concentration, as well as
reduces stress. older adults who spend time reading,
show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate
in more mentally stimulating activities, over their
life time. Books are an inexpensive entertainment,
education and time machine too. The main goal is to
encourage reading, as both fiction and nonfiction books
open up huge unknown vistas to enquiring minds.
This improves imagination gives a lot of information
and builds curiosity of inquiring facts .
8
th
is world physical therapy day. This profession
makes crucial contribution in keeping people well,
mobile and independent.
9
th
is World first AID Day First aid is one of the
simplest basics of health care. The International
federation of Red Cross and Red crescent societies
introduced World First Aid Day in 2000. The purpose
Healthy
September

41HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
is to raise awareness, of how first aid can save lives
in every day and crisis situations. First aid should
be accessible to all including the most vulnerable
and should also be an integral part of a wider
developmental approach. On 9
th
FASD awareness
day is observed. The purpose is to raise awareness,
about the dangers of drinking during preqnancy and
the plight of individuals and families, who struggle
with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorders. One should
remember that during the nine months of pregnancy, a
woman should abstain from Alcohol.
10
th
is World suicide prevention day. Suicide has
a number of complex and interrelated and underlying
contributing factors. that can contribute to feelings
of pain and hopelessness. Having access to means to
kill me self, most typically fire arms, medicines and
poisons is also a risk factor. As of 2011, an estimated one
million people per year die by suicide, or a death every
40 seconds, or about 300 every day. According to W.H.O
there are 20 people who have a failed suicide attempt,
for everyone, that is successful, at a rate approximately
one every three seconds. Suicide is the common cause
of death for people aged 15-24. More people die from
suicide than from murder and war. It is the 13
th
leading
cause of death world wide. the theme of this year is
“Take a minute, change of life”. I have seen and heard
of people, who had been for committing suicide, but
came back, when they stood silent and had a second
thought, for a minute. If you postpone for a minute, you
will definitely opt for living. This day is also observed
as National Grand parents d a y. In l India, we need
not celebrate this day on 10
th
only. Because concept of
Indian traditional joint family, had a very respectable
and lovely position to our grand parents. The grand pa
or grand ma was the backbone of family, and under
their leadership, supervision and care, children and
grand children used to live a very happy and healthy
together life. It was taught to look at joys and sorrows,
happiness and sadness, Victory-defeat and treat all
this as equal and we all prepared to se life, as it comes.
Through religious base, eg. Bhagavadgita, we were
taught, to do our duties with our sincere efforts and
leave the result to that Almighty. Love and bondage was
still there betweem 3-4 generations. But more recently,
following problems have disintegrated family. New
generation wants to live independently, separately,
without elder’s control and advise. Many women are
educated and working. Their economic independence
does not allow elder’s interference.l Many educated
sons, daughters and grand children are getting higher
education and prefer to stay in cosmopolitan cities
of India and abroad. Though land, house, money is
provided, aged grand parents lack affection, bondage
of love, living togetherness support, and medical help,
during their old age. This day forces us to reconsider
our family values.
13
th
is International Chocolate day. A few studies
have shown that, chocolate release those pain reducing
endorphins in to our brains. It contains theobromine,
a caffeine like stimulant and anandamide, which
is naturally found in the brain, and said to produce
those elusive warm fuzzles, similar to the effects of
marijuana. with 5 grams of sugar and 200 calories dark
chocolate with nuts and sea salt, it is good, some say. It
is believed that it may help protect your cardiovascular
system. The reasoning being that the cocoa bean is rich
in a class of plant nutrients called flavonoids. This has
antioxidant power. The fat in chocolate comes from a
cocoa butter and is made up of equal amounts of oleic
acid, (a heart healthy mono unsaturated fat also found
in olive oil) stearic and palmitic acids which are forms
of saturated fat. some studies have suggested it could
lower cholestrol levels and prevent memory decling.
But we have seen that by eating more chocolates ,
children’s hungry dies. Many children’s teeth gets
affected.
13
th
is National Peanut Day:- peanuts have almost
zero cholestrol. These provide a whopping and 8 grams
of protein per ounce. It is high in antioxidants. It
contains vitamin E magnesium, niacin, phosphorous,
B6, Iron, selenium and zinc.
16 is the International eat all Apple day:- Many
people think that, apple is a costly fruit, only meant
for rich people. But the proverb an apple a day, keeps
the doctor away. Health benefits of eating apples are
phytonutrients can help regulate your blood sugar.
Fiber can help, maintain digestive health and lower
levels of LDL cholesterol. some evidence suggests,
eating apples can reduce the risk of heart disease,
Alzheimers discase and even cancer. Apples contain
no body fat and contain cholestrol fighting compounds
On 18
th
we have World Water monitoring day.
This aims to build, public awareness and involvement
in protecting water resources, around the world, by
empowering citizens, to carry out basic monitoring of
their local water bodies. World Alzheimers day is
observed on 21
st,
to raise awareness about Alzheimers
and dementia. This is a progressive brain disease,
which results in loss of memory and thinking skills.
It desroys the brain cells, which cause memory loss,
memory changes, erratic behavior, and loss of body
functions. This disease usually starts slowly, but
gets worse with time. The patient fiuds difficulty in
remembering names, address, and roads. This disease
mostly affects elderly people. Since the population of
elders is rising in India, this is the cause of alarm.
There is no cure. Family and social support plays a key
role.
car free day on 23
rd
:- Car free movement is
advocated. social activists, urban planners, a few
organizations have shared a belief that, large and
high speed motorized vehicles, are too dominant in
most cities. The goal of this movement is to create
places, where such vehicle’s use is greatly reduced
and dominated, to convert road and parking space,
to other public uses and to rebuild compact urban
environments, Where most destinations are within
easy reach by walking, cycling or public transport

Today safe and efficacious animal and human vaccines
are available, to eliminate all human deaths from dog
mediated rabies. I had seen a kannada film, where
hero in the role of doctor was attacked by rabies and
we remember even today, those scenes of suffering,
water phobia of hero and man acting just like a dog.
The theme for this year is,
Rabies; zero by 30. International week of Deaf
2017 Is from 18
th
to 24
th
. world deaf day is the annual
observance on 30
th
. There are about 70 million deaf
people, in the globe. According to one estimation, more
than 80% of deaf people are existing in developing
countries. Deaf people face many tribulations in
their lives. The problems are further increased,
when no legal security comes from governments or
society, it is hard to elucidate the troubles faced by
deaf people. Due to lack of communication, deaf are
reluctant to get many other skills and talents for their
own benefit to understand the people. many are also
not able to understand, the sign languages. Though
normal people want to help deaf, as there is a problem
of language, expression and understanding, mutual
communication is very difficult. Both should have a lot
of patience and efforts, to reach the goal.
World Heart day is organized on 29
th,
to inform
people, about cardiovascular diseases which are the
biggest cause of death. The day promotes preventing
measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Healthy eating is one of the life style topics, promoted
on this day. According to W.H.O about 17.5 million
people died due to cardiovascular diseases in 2005,
representing 30% of all global death. Risk factors that
may lead to heart disease and stroke include; raised
blood pressure, cholestrol and glucose levels, smoking,
inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables; obesity.
The other main risk factors, which can be controlled
are tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

st
is Navaratri. Though three forms of Goddess
Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi are invoked during
Dasara festival, Navarathri symbolizes positivity over
negativity. Negativities such as excessive sleepiness,
sloth, lust, anger, pride, envy, impatience and a lack
of faith, are obstacles in doing spiritual practices and
making spiritual progress. Through prayer, we can
increase our will power gain greater self control. Devi
is knowledge and this leads one to truth. Ignorance
leads one to untruth and sorrow. The mind is the cause
of bondage and liberation To bring back the mind to
the centre, gone everywhere, we keep a joyful silence
with awareness. This is like conditioning the mind, to
set pattern, that is conducive to growth. The message
is, we can realise the self, through sadhana, seva,
satsang and the Guru’s grace.
The theme for International day of peace for
2017 on 21
st
is, together for peace, respect, safety and
dignity for all. Antonio Guterres secretary general
of U.N.O said “together let us build bridges, together
let us transform fear in to hope”.The United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural organization is
celebrating 50
th
year of International literacy day
on 8
th
. Theme for this year is Reading the past
Writing the future. Literacy is a foundation to build
more sustainable future for all. Literacy is a bridge from
misery to hope. Illiteracy, Ignorance, wrong notions,
spoil health and life. From conception till raring a
child, during antenatal, natal care post natal care,
all require education and minimum understanding.
There is a very close relationship between Literacy,
poverty, backwardness, status of women, health and
family planning,. Nutrition and standard of life.

th
is celebrated as onam festival, and like any
other festival this represent prosperous and happy
people. By taking oil bath, eating nourished and
healthy home made traditional food, by all family
members assembling together, singing, dancing, and
eating gives celebration mood, along with relaxation
and rejuvenation.Hindus observe Anant Chaturdashi
as the last day of Ganesh festival, where ganesh idols
brought in to from homes and communities, and are
immersed in the nearby lakes, rivers and sea, in the
mass procession. Nowadays environmental facet has
been given by using eco-friendly, ganesh idols, made of
mud and preventing pollution by stopping idols made
out of plaster of Paris, which is eco-harming. vishnu’s
Anant roop is worshipped with panchamrut made of
milk, curd, jaggary honey and ghee, which is very tasty
and healthy. Viswakarma day is celebrated on 17
th
as
it is believed that lord viswakarma created the entire
universe heaven and earth. He is credited for creating
weapons used in that era, including vajrayudha from
the bones of Dadichi. His fourhands carry book, a
water pot, a noose and crafts man’s tools.

sometime and becomes unstable without pitta to keep
it in place The endometrium starts to break down and
shed but no real pattern the more kapha you have the
more menstrual blood you have .Failure to ovulate can
happen when pitta is not floating around in sufficient
amount to trigger a surge which triggers ovulation
High and stable kapha level prevent ovulation.
‹‹Low fluctuating Kapha –menopause
Low fluctuating Kapha and no tempering of pitta
as before menopause lining becomes thin and sheds
irregularly and eventually spotting
‹‹Stepwise evaluation:
Rule out causes of DUB
Estimate the frequency and amount of blood loss.
Next determine if bleeding is Ovulatory or non
Ovulatory
Women require rapid safe and effective treatment
for their menstrual problems.
‹‹Management of DUB
In toxic /ama stage digesting toxins with the help
of fasting and by shamana/palliative medicines is
important. In early ama stage/toxic stage stambaka/
arrest bleeding medication therapy is not advised
because of the fear of complications like heart diseases,
anemia, and grahani/intestinal sprue, skin disorders,
pliha/spleen disorder, gulma/fibroid, udara/ascities
and fever.
In non toxic stage /nirama stage, stambaka/arrest
bleeding medication can be directly used.
After this retrograde cleansing measures are
advocated. These measures address both Ovulatory/
vatanubandi and non Ovulatory/kaphanubandi-
associated with kapha causes of DUB in PCOS.
In Dub where there is vatanubandha/association
of vata bioenergy- dry and heat quality dominate in
the illness and hence santarpana/satiating therapy
is employed using yavagu, peya followed by vamana
therapy if vata bioenergy is not dominant. If patient
is thin, weak, elderly dehydrated, a drink made out of
pomegranate and gooseberry concoction with honey is
given as a soother drink.
DUB looks intense in ama stage/with toxin and
hence langhana is advised and for this shunti varjita
shadanga paneeya is indicated.
Kharjura peya /jala, boiled and cooled water
for vital nutrition to maintain the vital function is
prescribed.
Cleansing therapy should be employed only in
indicated cases without any associated complications
Laja churna with honey and ghee
Spatika bhasma with shammi patra kashaya or
lajjallu kashaya are recommended with medicines like
Durvadi ghrutha, vasadi ghrutha, Shatawari ghrutha
chandanadi churna, eladi gutika, kushmanda lehya

will use you at their will. Make it hard hitting guideline
that when a so called spiritual master is inclined in
selling of any product, visible or invisible, should be
seen with doubt and individual discretion is required.
If a spiritual practitioner is still entangled with money,
fetching skills, then he is not the being whom you are
searching for your spiritual advancement. He is not
able in gaining enough courage to declare himself
as a business person. He has taken an easy path to
compete under same business environment. Why a
person tracing the path of spiritualism and learning to
connect with divine would sell noodles or soap? Once
a person realizes divinity, then definitely the worldly
attachment will fall apart. If the things are not falling
apart, it definitely emphasizes upon some dark spot
and act of deception will surface sooner or later.
Observe diligently to that spiritual person whose
saying is not matching with his deeds. If a maharishi
is competing with Tata and Ambanis then definitely he
is in race of coming first in both worlds, which never
happens. Now if you get trapped, then the onus will be
on the individual too. The person who gets cheated is
equally responsible as cheater. There is no need to sell
a product if you have yoga with the divine. If you have
any logic in de-justifying it, please live to the worldly
affairs completely otherwise there is ample of chance
that you will falter and mislead others.

Emergency
Contraception-
A safeguard
against unwanted
pregnancies
Woman health
Research shows that seventy-eight percent of the
pregnancies in India are unplanned and at least twenty-
five percent are unwanted. This unfortunately leads to
abortions, numbering to approximately 11 million a
year, half of which are unsafe and are associated with
high morbidity and mortality.
Unprotected sexual intercourse and contraceptive
failure are the key causes leading to unintended
pregnancies. Lack of awareness further augments
this problem. Inspite of efforts at sex-education,
couple protection rate is still low. Illegal abortions,
social trauma, abandoned children are all results of
ignorance.
Emergency contraception- a safeguard against
unwanted pregnancies though an available option is
not well known. Inspite of being available in the Indian
market for nearly a decade, studies show that only
one out of every 100 women is aware of emergency
contraceptive pills. This emphasizes the need to spread
awareness regarding this method of contraception in
order to increase acceptability.
Emergency contraception can be used when a
condom breaks, if a diaphragm or cervical cap slips
out of place during intercourse, after a sexual assault,
or any time unprotected intercourse occurs. As per
clinical trials, these pills can prevent a pregnancy
by up to 89% effective if taken within 72 hours of
unprotected sexual intercourse.
Most of the unwanted pregnancy is due to failure
to use contraceptives, or contraceptive failure
like condom breaks, diaphragm slips, IUD getting
misplaced, pills being missed out or after a sexual
assault. Under such circumstances, knowledge and
timely use of emergency contraceptive can be the
saviour. Pregnancy can be avoided with a success rate
of 75 -99% depending on the time interval between
intercourse and consumption of the emergency
contraceptive pill.
The term is used to describe methods which can
be used post - coital to prevent pregnancy following
unprotected sexual act. EC acts as an interceptive
agent, i.e. ovulation, fertilization or implantation is
prevented depending on the phase of menstrual cycle.
That means: -
zzIt may stop an egg being released from the ovary.
zzIf an egg has been released, it may prevent the
sperm from fertilizing it.
zzIf the egg is already fertilized, it may prevent it
from attaching itself to the lining of the womb.
It is important to note that pregnancy is
established only after the fertilized egg attaches
itself to the womb. This process ideally takes 5 -7
days after an unprotected sexual act and within this
time frame pregnancy can be prevented. Once this
period is passed and pregnancy is established, an
emergency contraceptive will be ineffective as it
does not abort.
EC contains a hormone called Levonorgestrel
which is highly efficient and has minimal side
-effects. This is the same ingredient that is found in
several birth control pills. The difference is that ECs
contain a larger dose of levonorgestrel and when
taken immediately after an unprotected sexual act
maximizes the protection against pregnancy. Hence
there is a need to emphasize that success of EC lies
mainly on its correct and prompt use.
a reliable choice
when other measures fail
Proper and Timely usage of Emergency Contraceptive pills can bring down the
spiraling figures of unsafe abortions thus giving the women the choice of a
safe and reliable alternative. So EC is a safe alternative method of preventing
unintended pregnancy

48HEALTHVISIONSEPTEMBER-2017
S , a 35 year old school teacher came to me with a
dull look for counseling on recommendation by one
of my old classmate.S had a H/o Hypothyroidism
& Anaemea & was under psychiatric treatment for
anxiety. She had a deep sense of guilt consciousness (
tightness in the chest) & temperament issues beacause
of which she always found herself weeping, unable to
take right decisions & quitting jobs abruptly.
She had loved a colleague she couldn’t marry as her
parents wouldn’t allow her, owing to his different caste.
Her husband couldn’t cope with her temperament
& superiority complex,so he kept moving in & out
of her life.Consequently, after her first daughter she
aborted twice against her wish, leading to deep guilt.
The fourth child too was unwanted but she decided to
continue, abandoned by her husband when she was in
her second trimester. She had difficult times rearing
two daughters with a sense of loneliness & helplessness
whenever her husband left her in the interim period
adding up to her anger & bitterness against him.
My first counseling was aimed at neutralising that
deep guilt. I tried to convince her that she need not
hold herself responsible of double murder,as life does
not start until the first breath of the foetus & that the
soul had planned its life at some another time sequence
.She seemed to feel much relieved after that.
She was willing to undergo Past life regression
sessions :
During a couple of such sessions, while working
on her anger & bitterness, she seemed to experience
& relate to a lifetime where similar absence of her
husband in her life owing to his constant travelling as
a merchant made her feel lonely & vulnerable to cold
stares & emotional torture in the society. She carried
anger & bitterness against her husband into the
interim life period.
I then made her experience yet another contrast
lifetime where she was a male who lived a prosperous
life with enough name, fame & wealth where he himself
donated every material belonging to his sister &
brother in law .He left on a pilgrimage & lived a full
life, contented with his life partner till 70 years & died
a peaceful death.
After all these insights & experience she seemed
more releaved of her dilema.I had to make her realise
that the negativity of her earlier life experiences had
already been balanced by her & that she need not attract
it all over again in this life. She could now readily co-
relate as to why she attracted similar circumstances
in the current lifetime It was evident on her next visit
itself.She now looked more cheerful.
I have asked her to work on her current hurdles &
relationship issues with the help of those insights &
report to me for the next review after 40 days.Another
few sessions of counseling were carried out till she
could actually put the suggestions into practise in her
day to day life.
CONCLUSION:
She has now resumed her work as a teacher at
high school and is trying for a transfer closeby.
She seems to have tamed her temper but her anger
& resentment with husband is taking time but
I’m sure she’ll work on it.On a better note, her
symptoms of tightness in the chest & thyroid levels
have reduced remarkably. S has discontinued her
psychiatric medicines too over the period.

‹‹Side effects –
Today the hair dyes available in India are good and if
patch test is performed and then used, it is safe practice. Side effects are seen sometimes, if poor quality hair dye is used, not applied properly, over treating, and under treating. Allergic reactions, irritation to dye are noted. Repeated use of permanent hair dye may damage hairs.
The allergen in hair dye is PPD. The most common
symptoms include itchy scalp, redness and swelling in the scalp, mild dandruff, swelling around the eyes and eyelids, and scaly skin around eyes, nose and face. Scalp skin may become irritable and will not allow combing the hairs. If patient is suffering from allergic skin problems or asthma, flare up of these lesions may happen. If caution is not taken while applying hair dye, hair dye may trickle into eye and conjunctivitis and keratoconjuctivitis may develop.
The alkaline action of ammonia has to be neutralized
immediately, otherwise hair damage will continue and hair will lose lustiness and silkiness, and may become rough and break.
Laboratory experiments have proven that PPD can
damage human DNA cells and cause cancer. But, small amount of PPD found in hair dyes is capable of causing
cancer is not yet established.
Resorcinol is another
chemical present in hair colors. It is an endocrine disrupting chemical that can increase the risk of breast cancer by disrupting the natural balance of hormones.

Respiratory diseases are one of the largest killers
across the globe. They rank second, next only to accidents in conditions causing death in the Indian population. Respiratory diseases do not only cause suffering, they also impose a huge economic burden on the nation. The picture is more devastating if the younger population or the earning members of the family are affected with these disorders. Thousands of people of all ages are victims of these terrible conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), fibrotic lung diseases, bronchiectasis (a type of fibrocystic lung disease), or idiopathic pulmonary artery hypertension.
Labelling patients with these diseases used to
be like declaring a death sentence, as they progress inexorably with time despite receiving the best available medical treatment. Fortunately, this is no longer true, at least in the developed world as lung transplantation has revolutionized the management of chronic respiratory diseases. Though India has made its mark in other solid organ transplant, lung transplant is still in its infancy . India, despite bearing one of the largest respiratory disease burdens, is lagging far behind in its lung transplant programme. India has performed less than 200 lung transplants so far, where as more than 50 thousand lung transplants have been done across the globe.
‹‹How does lung transplantation help?
zzLung transplantation offers a potential
treatment option for highly selected patients with advanced chronic lung disease who continue to deteriorate despite maximal medical therapy. Patients who are not able to do their routine work, and are barely able to walk and are dependent on oxygen therapy for a long time are the candidates who can benefit the most from a transplant.
zzIn lung transplantation, the lungs (either one or
both) are taken from a deceased organ donor and transplanted into the recipient. The recipient is initially thoroughly assessed for suitability for transplant  and if suitable donor is available
,transplant is performed within a narrow window of six hours after they are harvested.
zzThe lung is an active organ in the immune
process, so fairly intensive immunosuppression is needed to ensure that the recipient’s immune system does not reject the transplanted lung/s. As a result of which the recipient is potentially exposed to infective organisms through the air we breathe.
zzLung transplant not only involves expertise from
the medical aspect but also requires tremendous support and commitment from the family.

Risk factors for
heart attacks
The incidence of heart
attack is increasing in
India. Children should
be taught about the ill
effects of the various risk
factors right from their
early schooldays.
The news of someone stricken with heart attack is
becoming increasingly common. According to health
statistics, the incidence of heart attack is increasing
in India. Paradoxically, the incidence is decreasing in
developed countries. This is attributed to increased
awareness among general public and preventive
measures adopted at an early age. It has been well
documented that by adopting preventive measures,
heart attack can be prevented to a great extent. This
awareness is needed urgently in India, as most heart
attack victims are at their peak of productive life.
Heart is an organ, which continuously pumps
blood into various parts of body, to supply oxygen and
other nutrients which are essential for sustenance of
life. Heart itself depends on two small blood vessels
to supply its requirements of oxygen and nutrients.
These blood vessels are known as coronary arteries.
With ageing process small cholesterol (fat)
deposits occur in the walls of the vessels and gradually
the vessels become thickened, hardened and narrowed.
Certain factors make this change to occur earlier
and faster. These factors are known as risk factors for
coronary artery disease.
Some of the known risk factors for heart
attacks are:
zzTobacco Smoking: Smokers carry 3-6 fold
greater risk of developing heart attack
than a non-smoker. The Nicotine, Carbon
monoxide and other poisonous substances
in tobacco cause damage to the vessel wall,
increase the Blood Pressure and increase
the fatty acid level in the blood-all leading
to enhanced atherosclerosis (hardening
of vessels). They also increase the heart
rate and cause irregularity of the heart
beat which can lead to sudden death. Even
passive smoking (you, a non-smoker, as a
bystander inhaling tobacco smoke breathed
out by a smoker) is considered equally
damaging. Smoking beedies, cigars and
pipes are as bad as Cigarette smoking.
Chewing tobacco as well as using snuff is
considered to be harmful.
zzHigh Cholesterol: Increased level of
cholesterol (Fat) in the blood increases the
incidence of hardening of arteries and thus
increases the chance of developing heart
attack. Though the level of total cholesterol
in the blood is important, it is more
important to know the level of different
types of cholesterol. Mainly there are two
types of cholesterol which are concerned
with atherosclerosis. They are LDL and
HDL cholesterols.
zzLDL Cholesterol level will increase by excessive
consumption of fats derived from animal sources
- cream of the milk, butter, ghee, ice cream, yolk

Over used example, a glass is half full positivity, a
glass half empty negativity, is that so …
Let’s deal with it little more,
Scientist on TV on the recent episode of Chandra
Grahana, they were saying there is nothing like
negativity at all, but the astrologers on TV they were
saying there is something called sakarathmaka, &
Nakaratmaka kriye.
I also feel there is, positivity & negativity, good &
bad, happiness & sadness, Plus & Minus, What do you
all think ?
Where is this positivity & Negativity?
Positivity is the one which you feel good, Negativity
is one you feel Bad, what is this Feel good & Feel Bad, it’s
your feeling only, so it looks, you can choose positivity
or Negativity, why you feel good & why you feel Bad,
depends on the experience you have with whatever you
are dealing with.
A thought comes in to your mind, it transforms
in to a feeling later to emotions & finally in to Action
which is experienced by people, who are with you,
can we take it as mind behavior, which results in to a
physical behavior, mind is not seen but people can see
the body behavior.
When we talk of the MIND, you would have heard
learned people saying, it’s all your mindset, & the
mindset comes from where? It’s our past baggage we
have been carrying all along our past, our child hood
experiences, how did we got groomed, there is saying,
you are brought up with hostility, you tend to be hostile,
our today’s frame of mind goes down to your child
hood, you had series of bad events in your life you tend
to look at the life with suspicion of what bad events
are in store for you. & other way if your experiences
are good, you are groomed well, you start seeing an
opportunity in every aspect of life, you are confident
to face the world with at most clarity.
Shall we conclude that the positivity & Negativity
is within our self, yes
Positivity & Negativity is in inner self, deep in our
mind!
We have heard people say, healthy mind, healthy
body, what is the meaning of it, you keep your mind
healthy & you can have healthy body. Research says the
way you think, your body behaves the same way,
Yathbhavam Thath Bhavathi!
Our body is nothing but group of Human cells, we
have close to 120 trillion cells in our body, which are
visible to bio microscope, one can see the cells happily
moving around emitting photon light, this is what
happens in happy people, you can see the cells healthy
behavior, it’s said happy person is always enjoys good
health compared to people with un happiness, always
occupied with sadness & involved in acts of hurting
someone. If one can start loving people all around us,
try doing good, keep happy thoughts always, instead of
cribbing what we do not have, thank for what we have
been blessed, then our mind starts looking healthy,
there are evidences when you start hating people
around you, your own body cells will start hating
you, which is nothing but “auto immune disease”, to
reverse this, the patients suffering, if they cultivate
the positivity of healthy mind , being happy & make
others happy, they started improving in the health.
There are evidences documented to this effect. Thanks
to Dr B M Hegde legendry professor from Mangalore,
who shared this information.
There has been always a fight between two hungry
wolves in our mind, one good & the other Bad, if one is
asking who will win finally; it depends on whom you
are feeding.
‹‹It’s just a mirroring effect.
There are people who say, I get peaceful & Happy
when I visit temple, I get disturbed unhappy when I
visit hospitals,
we frame our mind when we visit temple, to be
at peace, you do not entertain any kind of negative
thoughts, your entire attention is on the deity, you do
not have any agenda to hurt somebody or quarrel with
Positivity & Negativity
…A thought

I wish to say, your own good
thoughts, good behavior leads to that
peace & Happiness, It’s a reflection
of your own thoughts & Happiness,
like you see in a mirror, Yes the
positive vibes you experience in the
temple adds to it,
Your thoughts modulates as per the circumstances,
like wise your feelings leading to emotions, you are
very happy when you are a part wedding or birth day
party, your mind is happy, while you a part of funeral,
you have a un happy feeling leading to sadness.
If the mind behaves in a reverse order, then you
call the mind as MAD, isn’t it?
‹‹Negativity, the fear Factor
There is a fear factor between all this, we are all
active part of this, we are not
sure GOD is there or not But we
seriously know there is a devil
in the universe, we promote evil
exclusively in our mind so that it
will mirror the fear factor in us. If
anything you do not like perhaps
happens, we relate it to the black
magic or planets & stars are not
in favor of us, the fear mounts
so heavily, we seek help from
astrologers & others, who really
get help from us because we fulfill
their demands.
Common problems we face
with respect to human relations,
especially with husband & wife
relationships, yes when there are two people their
upbringing is different & their thoughts are different,
there would be some amount of disagreement in the
relations, but when it happens
we relate it to the factors
mentioned above & loose the
left over peace of mind, Instead
sit & discuss the facts & sort
out the differences with some
agreements, all issues can be
happily sorted.
‹‹Healthy MIND is not easy
to get!
You all must be thinking
it’s easy to say all this, but
how do we get this. Because
you say it’s easy to say all this, it’s very difficult
to get this frame of mind.
One has to basically have belief in the positive
frame of mind, one has to have positive upbringing
with lot of morals from elders, One should be open to
correction, look at the whole world without judging
the people ( It’s the most difficult to practice ) because
we start the day with judging people. If the milk wala
come 5 minutes late we say he is a lazy fellow! Right.
Wisdom to have great containing
ability to be practiced with lot of
care! Do not hurt people, do not
belittle any one, be happy, do not
magnify the problems, problems
are everywhere, it’s our inability
to handle make them worse. Be
happy & make sure keep others
happy.
Once you start sharing others
sorrow, once you start feeding
the poor you will experience a
rare happiness & you do not get
such happiness, when you feed
yourself.
Once you start helping people
& you see a smile on their face,
you will experience ten times more happiness. You
will see virtually glow on your face.
Some are born with these habits, if not one can
work hard to get these habits,
The only route for your healthy mind, leading to
only the positivity, True Happiness & good health
With all this I would personally suggest, you need
to look in to your view on this, beware of the people
who are bent upon hurting, belittling, always planning
to trap someone in to un easy situation, who enjoy
troubling others, it’s always better keep them away to
protect your own positivity, peace & happiness, lord
Krishna says there no one who can be changed we can
possibly influence them to be happy & keep others
happy.
He could not also change kavravas then who are we.
At the end we need to think positive, Feel positive,
try to keep everyone happy, be happy, and elicit
positivity everywhere.
Goodness is in us, positivity is in us, happiness is
in us, & it’s not outside, no else can give these, you
need to get for yourself, no one transfer happiness to
you, one can show the route but you need to travel on
your own alone . One who can smile while in difficult
situation is much closer to positivity. Try you may
reach where you need to be at the ultimate happiness.

The benefits of maintaining good oral health and
proper dental hygiene are not just limited to having
a beautiful smile and fresh breath, but have positive
effects for every organ all throughout the body. The
mouth works as the entry gate welcoming all the food
that enters the body. Not just one or two, but quite a
many scientific research and reports provide pieces of
evidence suggesting the association of an unhealthy
mouth with the life threatening cardiovascular
diseases and other health problems like heart attack,
stroke, diabetes, to name a few. And, often the first
signs of 90% of the diseases are detected here only.
Ensuring a healthy dental hygiene routine with the
following few ways, one can do wonders in keeping the
disease inflicting bacteria away.
‹‹Regularizing the Oral Hygiene Efforts
The first and the foremost thing to ensure good oral
health and dental hygiene is to establish and follow
daily oral and dental hygiene routine at home. This will
keep the assimilating plaque away and will also ensure
the cleanup of tooth and gum decay causing sticky
bacterial film. The routine should include twice a day
brushing rule along with daily flossing preferably at
night. For extra protection and dental
care, one can also try the mouthwash
with powerful tooth-strengthening
and odor preventing components in it.
‹‹Keeping a strict check at the
food habits
This is the most obvious and a
crucially essential thing to do to keep
the risks of any health issue aside.
And, as the dental care holds an
important position in ascertaining the
overall body health, one certainly needs
to take care of what all is going through
the mouth. If one eats up something
too acidic, the enamel coating of the
teeth is at risk. Even the excess sugar
consumption like that of donuts, candies and other
sweet things can degrade the dental hygiene, thereby
affecting the overall body functioning. Instead of,
going for the unhealthy snacks and candies, go for the
fruits, yogurts, cheese. For the sweet taste cravings, try
chewing some sugarless gums.
‹‹Getting away from the unhealthy lifestyle
A great benefitting way to boost the dental hygiene
along with keeping the risk of life threatening
cardiovascular and cancer health problems at bay is
to give up smoking, drinking alcohol and other
forms of tobacco consumption.
Speaking of the diseases, even
having unsafe oral sex can lead you
to the risks of contracting the oral
cancer causing human papilloma
virus. Oral piercings also need to
b e avoided as these trendy chunks
can chip teeth and harm tongue
tissues which further leads to
gum recession. If someone is facing
the bad habit of teeth grinding or
clenching, then one certainly needs
t o visit a dentist on an urgent basis and
get oneself a teeth guard to protect them
from excessive wear and tear along
with reducing pressure on the jaw joints.
‹‹Visiting a dentist at regular intervals
When it comes to maintaining oral health, paying
regular visits to the dentist becomes a necessity. The
professional will not just help you with the professional
teeth cleaning and flossing, but will also provide some
expert tips to keep the risks of teeth decaying and
plaque at bay. The regular visits will help in better
identifying any tooth problem at its early stage.
Remember the more early the problem gets identified
lesser becomes the pain during the treatment process.
So, don’t just wait for an ache to arrive to arrange a
dental appointment, instead make the dental meeting
with your dentist a monthly issue to have that perfect
bright and painless smile.

On seeing blood in stools and feeling
pain while doing a motion, first thing that
comes to our mind is am I having piles?
But before starting any treatment or
medication, it’s important to know that
not every bleeding while passing the
stool and swelling in the much sensitive
anal area is because of piles. Anal fitsula
and anal fissures are two more such
medical problems that almost reflect in the
same symptoms. So, how do we differ between
the three? This article will clear you about
the difference between the three, their
respective symptoms, prevention and
treatment.
‹‹Piles
Piles, also medically known as
hemorrhoids are a condition wherein
the blood vessels in the anal canal swell
up. The problem usually occurs due to
prolonged constipation and straining at
stools due to faulty diets, poor genetic or
unhealthy lifestyle habits like smoking and
drinking.
The early stages of piles are mostly
painless and result in very slight bleeding
only that of a few drops. But in the severe
stages the swollen blood vessels protrude
out of the anal canal and can cause a
lot of pain. The external piles are a lot
problematic as they are both visible and
painful with every slight movement.
The early stages of piles are not operated
and are treated with the medications,
fibrous diet, healthy exercise routines and
a few benefitting changes in the lifestyle
only. Even the external piles of third
and fourth stage can be treated but by
surgery only. But there’s nothing to worry
as nowadays, the improved techniques
and much evolved technologies such as
MIPH (Minimally Invasive Procedure for
Hemorrhoids) which considerably decrease
pain and fasten up the recovery process.
High fibrous diet along with a healthy
exercise routine and plenty of liquid
intakes works wonders in curing this
problem. Exerting too much pressure
while passing stools can also be harmful
so try avoiding it.

Anal Fissures
Fissures are the cuts and cracks in the
anal canal skin that can cause bleeding. It’s
extremely common in today’s generation and
are said to occur definitely once in every
person’s life.
As compared to piles, fissures hurt
quite a lot; so much so that the affected
person may even want to avoid their
regular toilet seating. Bleeding is not that
frequent and even if it occurs it may be
just a streak on the stool.

of the egg, organ meats like liver, brain and
kidney and shell fishes like prawn and crab.
Coconut oil is equally bad.
Vegetable oils like gingily
oil and sun flower oil
which contain high level of
unsaturated fatty acids are
preferable.
zzHDL cholesterol is increased
by regular physical exercise. Increasing the level of HDL
cholesterol protects the heart.
zzHigh Blood Sugar; Uncontrolled high blood sugar
has also been shown to accelerate atherosclerosis.
In addition, uncontrolled diabetics tend to be
overweight and have high cholesterol, all of which
further increase the risk for heart attack.
zzHigh Blood Pressure: Poor control of blood pressure
tends to increase the deposit of fat in blood vessels.
Not only coronary blood vessels are affected but
also there is increased incidence of damage to blood
vessels of brain (leading to stroke) and kidney
(leading to kidney failure). High blood pressure also
leads to enlargement of heart.
zzOverweight: Incidence of heart attack is high in
individuals who are overweight. Excess of weight
is usually due to too much of rich food (rich in fat
and sugar) and too little of exercise. This leads to
increased cholesterol in the blood and also increased
incidence of atherosclerosis.
zzSedentary Habit: It is a well known fact that physically
active people like athletes have less chance of
developing a heart attack. Equally well known is that
a sedentary person has a higher chance of getting
heart attack. Sedentary habit leads to deconditioning
(Heart is unable to cope up with stress) and obesity,
and also less burning of fat leading to high blood
cholesterol.
zzEmotional stress and strain can also enhance
atherosclerosis. Individuals who are always tense,
aggressive and who would like to achieve things
in a hurry are more prone for heart attacks. These
individuals are known to have type of behavioral
pattern. A person who is calm, philosophical and
takes things in his stride is known to live longer.
Women are normally protected against heart attacks, till they
attain menopause. However this protection is lost if they use oral
contraceptive pills for a long time and smoke tobacco.
zzHereditary factor: If anyone in a family had heart
attack, especially at an young age, the chances of an
individual in that family suffering a heart attack is
high. Such individuals who are at high risk, should
avoid such modifiable risk factors like smoking,
sedentary habit and high fat intake. They should
start their periodic checkups at much earlier age.
The process of hardening of the blood vessels can start as
early as the second decade (15 to 20 years of age). Hence it is
important to start the preventive measures at an early age.
taking drugs, early or later, you may
get addicted but if you start early
the more serious addiction it may
become. Adolescents are at high risk
of developing addiction and they
are more likely to get indulged in
risk taking behaviour because their
brains are developing in the areas
of decision making, locus of control
and judgment.
‹‹Symptoms that we should look
out for:
zzNeglecting responsibilities whether
at work, school or at home
zzPoor relationship or fighting with
family and friends
zzChange in behaviour/attitude
zzAggressive on petty issues
zzFrequently getting into illegal
activities
zzLethargy, lack of motivation
zzIrritation and lethargy
zzSudden loss in appetite and weight
zzLoss of sleep patterns
‹‹How can we control drug
addiction?
zz‘Prevention is better than cure’ fits
here very well because tobacco,
drugs and alcohol addictions can
be formed during adolescence. So,
remedial measures should be taken
in time.
zzParents and teachers have a special
responsibility to educate and counsel
an adolescent.
zzchildren should not be pressurized
unduly to do beyond their capacities
whether it’s study or sports because
they have their own personalities.
zzone should seek for help and
guidance whenever they face any
problem. Help should be taken from
friends and family members.
zzOne should seek help from
highly qualified psychologists,
psychiatrists and de-addiction
programmes if suffering from drug
addictions.

Health Tips
Choosing a home blood
pressure unit
Part-3
You can track your blood pressure by using a
home monitorbetween checkups. To choose the best monitor for you, askyour doctor for advice and balance convenience with accuracy:
‹‹Know your options
Aneroid models are inexpensive and easy to
transport. Theyinclude a stethoscope. Some have extra-large dials for easierreading, but they aren’t recommended if you have troublehearing or have poor dexterity in your hands. Electronic (digital) models are the most popular and can be expensive, butthey’re easy to use. However, if your heart rhythm is usuallyirregular, an electronic model may give you an inaccuratereading. Wrist monitors are difficult to calibrate, and digitalfinger units aren’t reliable.
‹‹Get a good fit
Most monitors have standard-size inflatable arm
cuffs. If yourarm is too large or too small for the cuff, buy the right size.A poor fit reduces accuracy. The
inflatable portion of the cuffshould wrap around 80 percent or more of your upper arm.
‹‹Consider your abilities
Is the gauge or digital display large enough to read
easily? Doyou hear well through a stethoscope? Can you easily pumpthe inflatable cuff ?
‹‹Test before you buy
Ask your health care professional or medical
supply salespersonto show you how to get the most accurate reading.
‹‹Learn how to use it properly
After you buy a blood pressure monitor, take it with
you toyour doctor’s office. In addition to making sure the deviceworks properly, your doctor or nurse can help you learn howto use it.
‹‹Check accuracy
Every six to 12 months, have your home monitor
checked against a standardized unit at your doctor’s office, fire department or public health service.
The most preferred procedure for treating the
anal fissures is a Lateral Sphincterotomy, which results in both immediate relief and recovery. However, more than 90% of the fissures don’t require surgery and can be treated with some medications, high fibrous diet and immense liquid intake.
‹‹Anal Fistula
The problem of fistula occurs when an
infected anal gland internally bursts into an anal canal. This further severs into a conduit for pus discharge in the anal canal.
Fistulas usually cause pus discharge which
result in a wet feeling around the anal area with some foul smell at frequent time. There are times when it may cause heavy pus discharge and at times it show up with almost no symptoms.
Fistulas are of varied types and can be detected
either by an ultrasound scan (sonofistulogram) or an MRI. There are many new methods of treating fistulas such as VAAFT – video assisted anal fistula treatment, wherein a camera moves through, identifies and then destroys the tract with electric current along with sealing it with staples and glue.
Having hygienic toilet habits is the most
important thing to avoid infections in the sensitive area leading to Fistulas.
So, whenever facing any problem with the bottom
part of your body, it’s better to seek a physician’s help in identifying and curing the problem instead of fearing it and making it even more severe.
Remember, good diet, healthy lifestyle routines
and proper exercise and yoga regimens can do wonders in preventing and curing all these problems.

Motherhood Hospitals in association with
Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research
Center held a two-day National level conference
“Neorespicon 2017” recently. The objective of the
conference was to discuss new & advanced techniques
for treatment of respiratory problem in newborn
babies & infants.
As a curtain raiser to this conference,a one-day
workshop on the Basic NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation
Program), Advanced NRP and training on ventilator
was given to more than 100 nurses and 170 doctors from
across India at Motherhood Hospitals, Sarjapur Road.
This is a first of its kind conference that gathered more
than 500 pediatricians and neonatologist from all over
India. Speaker and moderators who were represented
from every state of India, This created unique blend
of sharing regional and national knowledge, it is for
the first time importance of involving and training of
doctors practicing in private hospitals to contribute
their services to needy government hospitals were
emphasized. This could be a game changer in
improving in public health sector.
Neonatal respiratory disorder is the leading cause
of mortality and morbidity among new born babies in
India. Almost 85% of the newborn babies don’t survive
due to respiratory disorder. Premature delivery, in
utero infections, birth asphyxia are the major reasons
for the increasing respiratory problems in neonatal in
the pre-delivery stage. Also post-delivery, babies may
develop infections or there could be injury to the lung
during the delivery. These also leads to respiratory
problems among new born babies. Majority of the
infant mortality happens within one month of the
delivery and much of it will be preventable if the care
is taken properly.
Speaking on organizing this conference,
Dr.Prashanth Gowda, Head of Department -
Pediatrics and Neonatology, Motherhood Hospitals
says,“Right from the birth, a baby’s lungs needs to be
protected. If not, in the future they may develop different
kinds of breathing problems like Asthma, wheezing etc.
If the care is not taken in the initial stage, they may be
susceptible to the infections easily. This conference has
opened lot of channels, a lot of ideas from the senior
doctors as well as the new practitioners”.
When compared to urban India, infant morbidity
rate due to respiratory disorder is high in the rural
areas. Lack of basic respiratory support in the hospitals
in villages, lack of training to the doctors etc. are the
reason for this.To address this issue in India, there is
a need of government and private collaboration. Dr.
ShaliniRajineesh, Principal Secretary of Health
and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka
has urged the private hospital doctors to come forward
and go to the government hospitals on every month to
address the lack of facilities and knowledge under the
Pradhanmantri Matritva Surakhsha Yojana.
