Wankel engine Introduction: The  Wankel  engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion . D eveloped by Felix Wankel in the 1950s. In This Engine the crankshaft remained stationary in operation, with the entire crankcase and its attached cylinders rotating around it as a unit . A very clever rearrangement of the four elements of the Otto cycle. 4

Wankel Engine Main Parts Of Wankel Engine: Rotor. Housing. Eccentric Shaft. Apex Seal. 5

Rotor: The rotor has three convex faces, each of which acts like a piston. Each face of the rotor has a pocket in it, which increases the displacement of the engine, allowing more space for air/fuel mixture.  At the apex of each face is a metal blade that forms a seal to the outside of the combustion chamber. There are also metal rings on each side of the rotor that seal to the sides of the combustion chamber.  The rotor has a set of internal gear teeth cut into the center of one side. These teeth mate with a gear that is fixed to the housing. This gear mating determines the path and direction the rotor takes through the housing. 6

Housing: The rotor spin in the oval shaped chamber known as housing. The function of housing is same as the function of cylinder in the reciprocating engine. Housing contains inlet and outlet port, spark plug, water jacket etc. It is usually made by aluminum silicon alloy. The housing is roughly oval in shape   7

Eccentric shaft : Eccentric shaft, which is also known as the output shaft is used to convert the eccentric motion of rotor into  concentric motion and carry it out from engine. 8

Apex seal: All sides of triangular rotor works as the piston. So it is necessary to seal this entire chamber with one another . To fulfill this function, apex seal is used to each corner of rotor. It is gas tight sealing between rotor and housing. It is usually made by cast iron and sometime by high carbon steel. 9

Working of Wankel engine The energy converting process in a Wankel rotary engine is divided into four processes. These are intake, compression, power and exhaust. The engine has three lobed. The rotor driven eccentrically in the casing in such a way that there are three separate volumes trapped between the rotor and the casing. 10

Intake process: Intake is mean to intake of air fuel mixture into the engine. When the lobe A moves, the space between lobe A and C expands. This cause air fuel mixture enters into engine through inlet port to fill the space. When the lobe C passes the intake port, the space between A and C sealed off .   11

Compression process: When the rotor revolves, the space between lobe A and B greatly reduced. So the mixture between lobe A and B compress. 12

Combustion process: When the mixture between A and B compressed completely, a spark generate at the spark plug which ignites the mixture. It burn and force the rotor to turn. It is also known as power generating process. 13

Exhaust process: When the lobe B passes the exhaust port the burn mixture exhausts . 14

Pros & cons of wankel engine The Pros Of Wankel Engine: The number of parts and overall put together of rotary engines are among one of the simplest in the world. Rotary engines use far less parts than other types of engines . These types of engines are very reliable and have an incredible performance rating . Due to it’s unique and revolutionary deign, rotary motors can produce very high levels of power, at higher RPM, with less vibrations. This means you can go much faster than piston engines! 15

Pros & cons of wankel engine The Cons Of Wankel Engine: Because of it’s simple design, oil leakage is very common among different components of the engine. This can cause big problems and cost a lot of money to correct . Rotary engines need frequent oil level checks and to have additional oil added to them . The amount of fuel that rotary engines uses is very high. This is because of the design of the engine and the small amount of parts that it contains 16

Applications of wankel engine: Automobile R acing: In the racing world,  Mazda  has had substantial success with two-rotor, three-rotor, and four-rotor cars. Private racers have also had considerable success with stock and modified Mazda Wankel -engine cars. Mazda 787B 17

Motorcycle Engines : The small size and attractive power to weight ratio of the Wankel engine appealed to motorcycle manufacturers. The first Wankel-engined motorcycle was the 1960 'IFA/MZ KKM 175W' built by German motorcycle manufacturer  MZ  licensed from NSU . 18

Aircraft Engines: In principle, a Wankel engine should be ideal for light aircraft, as it is light, compact, almost vibrationless and has a high power-to-weight ratio. Diamond DA20  with Diamond Engines Wankel ARV Super2 with the British MidWest AE110 twin-rotor Wankel engine 19

CONCLUSION: The Wankel Rotary Engine is a very interesting and well thought out engine.  There is a lot of history behind it and also some very interesting facts about it.  It has many advantages as well as many disadvantages.  Rotary engines certainly have their place in this world. However, due to the increase of maintenance required to keep them running well and the costs associated with driving one, they are best suited for specialized operations than daily driver vehicles. 20
