There are various water bodies which divide into categories of salt and fresh as well as small and large. Their features differentiate them from each other. 6 3.Ganges River The Ganges, or Ganga, is one of the world’s great rivers . Its wide valley stretches across northern India and Bangladesh from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the most fertile of all agricultural regions. Its rice and other crops feed hundreds of millions of people in India and in Bangladesh, where the river is also known as the Padma.
7 4.Dal Lake Dal is a lake in Srinagar (Dal Lake is a misnomer as Dal in Kashmiri means lake), the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The urban lake, is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is named the “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir” or “Srinagar’s Jewel”.The lake is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting.

The main entry point, situated between Kochi and Kollam, is Alleppey (Alappuzha). At the heart of the backwaters is vast Vembanad Lake.
9 6.Nainital Lake Nainital, the charming Himalayan lake town, is a picture-postcard perfect hill-station and one of the most popular in Northern India. Commonly known as the ‘Lake District’, Nainital is nestled high up in the Kumaon Himalayas at an altitude of around 2,000 m above sea level. This beautiful town in surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as ‘ Sapta-Shring ’ – Ayarpata , Deopata , Handi-Bandi , Naina , Alma, Lariya-Kanta and Sher-Ka- Danda . 10 7.Beas River The Beas River is a river passing through the northern Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. It is one of the five rivers, from which Punjab, meaning 'five rivers', gets its name. The total length of the river is 470 km (290 miles). The drainage basin of the river is 20,303 sq km large .T he Beas town in the Amritsar district of Punjab lying at its banks is named after the river. The river serves as a source of water to all the cities, towns and villages that fall in its course. The river adds to the natural beauty of the Himalayas.
11 8.Kodaikanal Lake Situated at Kodaikanal city the Kodaikanal Lake is an artificial lake and is also called Kodai Lake by the locals. 13 10.Gurudongmar Lake Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world and in India, located at an altitude of 5,425 m (17,800 ft), in Sikkim. It is considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus. The lake is named after Guru Padmasambhava —also known as Guru Rinpoche—founder of Tibetan Buddhism, who visited in the 8th century.
