Water Conservation Essay
"Every month about 3.9 trillion gallons of water is consumed by the United States alone" stated The
Water Information Program. Water conservation is when you use water efficiently and avoid waste.
Our water supply is restricted which means we don't have an endless supply. The Earth only has 3%
of fresh water and we only have access to about 1% of it. We currently have an increasing
population which makes it more important than ever to conserve our water supply. Most of the water
we have access to is either wasted or polluted. We need to take action to help conserve the water we
use today! Water is the most important substance to sustain human life. Water makes up to 60
percent of the human body. We can survive roughly up to 7–8 days without water. It is important to
conserve water because it minimizes the effects of water shortages during droughts, water sustains
human life, it helps preserve our environment, and it saves money. Conserving water helps minimize
the effects of water shortages during droughts. Even though water eventually returns back to the
Earth, it doesn't always return to the same spot. When an area doesn't get the water it needs, a
drought occurs. A drought occurs when there is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall;
resulting in water shortages. Droughts also cause food shortages because when a drought takes place
crops can't grow due to the lack of water. Droughts can cause major damages and some areas can't
recover. Conserving water can

Drought Conditions And Lack Of Rain
About 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water and only 0.3% of water is usable fresh water
while the remaining 99.7 is unusable salt water.Water is a commodity on this planet and we need to
take measures to restrain it. When there is less rainfall in a place or if the agricultural land is
destroyed due to lack of rain, it is defined as being in drought conditions .Drought is a condition in
which living beings such as birds, animals, plants, and human beings are affected by the lack of
precipitation of water on the land or the shortfall that results when the soil moisture is inadequate to
meet the demands of potential evapotranspiration. The main factors responsible for such widespread
hazardous scarcity conditions are major deformity in the rainfall patterns, indiscriminate cutting of
trees, large scale deforestation, and massive soil–erosion. Due to the severity of the drought
condition people need to work together as a whole and find solutions to solve this problem.
Although there are ways to overcome drought, it has become a very serious issue throughout the
nation because of the climate change. Drought is a big problem not only in the United States, but
especially in the villages of third world countries. Farmers suffer the worst during these conditions
of drought. They lose their harvest and are left with no forage for their cattle. Continuous drought
has an adverse effect on the crop field as it cut downs the volume of agricultural production.

Drought By Roz Spafford, The Provincials
In the two short stories "Drought" by Roz Spafford, and "The Provincials", by Daniel Alarcon, there
is one common problem; a drought. In the story "Drought" it is a literal drought causing survival
difficulties between a married couple, Chrissie and Clay, and their baby. It continues to get tough
between the couple as they distance themselves from one another slowly falling apart. In "The
Provincials" however there is a metaphorical drought in a Mexican town, where the father Manuel
used to live and the son, Nelson the aspiring actor, lives and the residents lack the necessities to
improve their lives while corruption attacks any generation that follows. The lack of essential
necessities in "Drought" signifies death while the metaphorical drought in "The Provincials" leaves
the town with no money or opportunity signifying causing hopeless lives. In the short story
"Drought" we come to a realization that Chrissie and Clay are caught in an unfortunate drought
stealing their milk, water and food causing their relationship to fall apart as they distance from one
another. Chrissie gets a rough realization when Clay denies her request to make love, "That night,
she wore her summer nightgown to bed, and when Clay turned away from her as usual, she rubbed
his clenched shoulders. "Please, honey," she said. "We can't," he mumbled into the pillow. "I'm
safe," she said. "Nothing is safe," he said." (193) Chrissie begins by wearing a nightgown to calm
the mood and excite her husband,

A Study On The Drought
Theoretical Framework
In this study, we conceptualize drought propagation as a cascading phenomenon that begins with
rainfall deficits and proceeds through the hydrological cycle as shown in Fig. 2. As the drought
proceeds, its impacts on associated or dependent societal and agro–ecological systems accumulated
(or ensues in worst critical or complex condition) as shown in Fig. 3. Consequently, we have elected
to use the framework of "diseases burden" to elucidate the cumulative drought effects. According to
Begg et al., 2007 and Mathers et al., 2007, disease burden framework is a standardized measurement
framework that permits comparison across diseases and injuries, as well as risk factors.

But as the drought deepens and soil moisture also becomes deficit, agricultural losses add to the
location's drought problems, leading to moderate droughts. Subsequently, as the drought situation
persists, and rivers, lakes, reservoirs and aquifers become deficit, thereby compounding the drought
problems the more, hydrological drought occurs as shown in Fig.4. With the idea of using disease
burden model to distinguish the drought severity, the integration of the different component
indicators or associated drought indices (i.e. SPI, SDI etc.), to achieve a hybrid composite index, is
conceptualized in this study, as being analogous to the concept of "set theory's" system of
combination of sets, used in the mathematics discipline. Hence, the concepts of disease burden and
set theory are our guiding intellectual frameworks for developing the proposed composite drought
index. The concept of set theory deals with study of set (Weiss, 2008). Intuitively, a set is an abstract
collection, group or aggregate of distinct objects, normally referred to as elements or members,
which may correspond to things in the world or to concepts etc. (Partee, 2006; Young, 2011). In set
theory, the combination of sets are done in three ways, namely by union, intersection and
complement (Young, 2011). In this study, we propose to use combination by union of sets approach,
since other methods may not capture all the elements or properties of various droughts under

The Potential for Future Crop Loss Essay
The Potential for Future Crop Loss
On the subject of potential crop loss there are several variables, which influence drought and plant
disease resulting in a loss of crops.
The first variable is that of drought. Drought is a result of shifting weather patterns, which changes
the amount of precipitation an area receives. There are three major causes of drought, deficient and
unfavorably distributed precipitation, excess heat and warm winds (Nemanishen, 1998, p.35).
Historically the grasslands of North America have had a highly varied climate with years of drought
immediately followed by years of sufficient precipitation. For example, in the area of the Palliser
Triangle in the grasslands of Canada, wheat crop loss has been seen ... Show more content on

Krick identified twelve major North American weather patters which paved the way for long term
weather forecasts that are now used universally in farming and crop production (Nemanishen, 1998,
p.27). It is understood that migratory cold blows bring moisture to the Great Plains and grasslands it
is important to track these cold blows in order to identify wet and drought seasons. Also understood
is the effect humans have on the weather patterns. At least two of the past three major droughts have
coincided with changes in the general circulation of the atmosphere over the northern hemisphere
(Borchert, 1971, p.7). It is undeniable that human use of land has modified atmospheric moisture
patterns. Also effecting moisture patterns is solar radiation. For example, in years with high volcanic
activity solar radiation was lower because the atmosphere was not as transparent. Higher solar
radiation results in less precipitation due to excess heat resulting in drought (Nemanishen, 1998,
p.36). It is difficult to deny that drought occurs rhythmically, however, on account of the great
randomness of weather we are only able to forecast when the next drought may be and gauge its
severity depending on what is known about the previous years.
Another variable resulting in crop loss is that of plant disease, and more specifically late blight. Late
blight is caused by the plant pathogen Phytophthora infestans

Drought In California
Water is the most precious resource to mankind. With every living substance needing water from
humans, animals, and plants it is the one thing no living creature can survive without. The thought
of losing or having restricted access to water is a very frightening one. Water shortages not only
pose an epic threat for the obvious reason, that water is needed, to drink, but also to the lives around
us. With little or no water people would have to make hard decisions such as, letting an animal
dehydrate so they can have enough water for their families to survive or who they should ration the
water to and how much to ration to save as many people as possible. California has been
experiencing a very severe drought that has cost California millions of dollars in agriculture and
manufacturing due to low water. Though their drought is not apocalyptic yet, but it could worsen
and become an apocalypse that we should fear. The changes that can come from such a disaster
would change the lives of everyone in society. The ways water shortages could come about is
multiple ways such as, drought, poor management of water, or political issues. Water corruption is a
threat to society which needs to be dealt with efficiently and immediately.
Societies are already being torn apart to nearly unlivable conditions due to low water amounts in
their countries. The prime example here is Africa. Many villages suffer from low water access. With
little or no access this forces the citizens of the

Water Conservation and the Drought in America Essay
As we all know, water is essential for mankind's survival. However, people seem to believe that our
water supply is endless since there is more water than land on this Earth. Water regenerates and is
redistributed through evaporation, making it seem endlessly renewable. So why worry?
Actually, only one percent of the world's water has the capability of being used by us. About ninety–
seven percent is salty seawater, and two percent is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. That only
leaves one percent of the precious water that is to be used by not only people, but used by animals,
plants, and food. Dehydration, which is the lack of water, will kill us faster than starvation, which is
the lack of food. Since the plants and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drought, like a destructing earthquake or flood, is a natural disaster. Drought is an insidious hazard
to nature. It results from a deficiency of precipitation over a long period of time over an area.
Precipitation is any kind of moisture like rain, snow, and sleet. One can determine how malicious a
drought can be by the amount of precipitation, and how long it is (Gleick, 2006).
What Are the Causes of Drought?
Although the main reason a drought occurs is the lack of precipitation, it is also caused by other
factors. High pressure is one of the main contributors of drought. Although a high–pressure system
brings clear, cool weather, if the high–pressure system continues for a long period of time, this will
eventually lead to a drought (100 Ways, 2012).
Another factor that contributes to the causes of drought is the lack of oceanic air mass. Most dry
land is given a nice breeze of water by oceanic winds. However, if these winds are not strong
enough to get the evaporated water to the dry lands, these lands will lack the moisture they
desperately need (100 Ways, 2012).
Deforestation is known to be the destruction of forests and woodlands. It is also one of the causes
that lead up to drought. Deforestation increases the risk of drought by taking all of the groundwater
from soil, which they heavily depend on to stay healthy (Deforestation, 2014).

Water Crisis: California's Drought
On March 27, 2014, Wade Graham of the San Francisco Chronicle reported "The Water Revolution
California needs." California is having a severe drought. Wade Graham tells his readers that
California is in a serious water crisis. The state of California needs to make strict changes to how
water is being distributed amongst farmers and residents. Before all of California's ecological
system is destroyed. Wade Graham believes that water should be priced higher; that way people
aren't wasting water. Water is a limited resource that should never be wasted, and is probably
California's most valuable resource. Unfortunately, many people waste water; instead of conserve
water especially when we live in the state of California where we are subject to ... Show more

This will help save water because seventy–five percent of our water is used by farmers who use
flood irrigation which is very wasteful. The second way to be resourceful is xeriscaping which is dry
landscaping. By Xeriscaping water is being saved there's no need to water your lawn or plants.
Residential Californian's spend about fifty percent of our water on watering the outdoors; that's
more than the rainfall we receive to be wasted on plants and lawns. The third way to be resourceful
is desalinization technology which is by taking water out of the ocean and treating the water so there
aren't any impurities or salt in the water so it can be digested. This method is very costly and could
also cause harm to the environment. Dozens of desalinization plants have been proposed to be built
in California, but it isn't cheap. The fourth way to be resourceful is by water recycling which is
being used in parts of California; but isn't used for drinking. However, the groundwater
replenishment system has purifiers which make recycled water safe to drink. This is one of the best
ideas on how to be resourceful because we already have groundwater replenishment systems in
California. Water recycling is cheaper than desalinization and doesn't cause harm to our
environment. Lastly in being resourceful is conservation the average Californian household uses
two–hundred gallons of water a day. Some good ways to conserve are: taking shorter showers,
turning off water when not in

The Effects Of Drought On Human Consumption
Throughout the past century many areas of the Western United States have faced agricultural
concerns, many environmental hazards, and economical stressors stemming from severe drought.
According to livescience.com, a drought can be described as a period of unusually dry weather that
persists long enough to cause environmental or economic problems. (Oskin, 2014) Droughts are
natural occurrences that have been happening for hundreds of years, and although their effects
haven't been documented that long, scientists have been able to identify their impacts by using
various research methods. Droughts are fairly complex issues that can have many impacts on
humans as well as be influenced by human interactions with the environment. Negative impacts are
being felt currently in the Western US and are not showing signs of slowing up. Drought is highly
dependent on human consumption of water be it for agricultural, industrial, or household uses. There
are many issues regarding human consumption of water, but one of the most notable is the fact that
we have very little fresh water available that can be accessed and used by humans. According to the
USGS, "about 71% of the Earth's surface is water covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5% of all
Earth's water" (Perlman, 2014). This is a pretty humbling statistic, and brings to light how easily
water can become scarce. With less than 3% of the Earth's water being readily available for
consumption, humans do not have much room for waste.

Drought Is A Natural Hazard
Abstract:
Drought is a natural hazard due to adverse climatic changes which affects various sectors like
environment, society and economy. It occurs not only because of the scarcity of rainfall but also due
to the inefficient water resource management. Studies indicate that over 30% of the entire land
surface of earth is affected by drought. As a developing country, majority of Indian population
depends directly or indirectly on agriculture. So the abnormal monsoon precipitation, causing loss of
agricultural production, can highly influence the human life. In this paper, Karur district in Tamil
Nadu which often has a very low annual rainfall is taken as the study area for drought monitoring.
The technological evolution in remote sensing over the past few decades has opened a new era in
the field of drought monitoring. Thus, use of remote sensing and GIS helps in developing early
warnings about drought conditions which will be useful for planning the strategies for relief work.
Drought analysis can be performed by calculating different drought indices like Standard
Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Water Level Index (SWI) and Normalized Differences
Vegetation Index (NDVI).Rainfall data from 2000–2009 is used to compute the Standardized
Precipitation Index (SPI) in different time scales which is used in meteorological drought
monitoring. Standardized Water Level Index (SWI) obtained from ground water level data is used
for the hydrological drought analysis.

Australian Drought
In Australia drought has, and can be a serious issue, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology says
drought is "Rainfall over a three–month period being in the lowest decile of what has been recorded
for that region in the past." Bureau of Meteorology records show that a fairly impacting drought in
Australia around once every eighteen years.
There are three types of drought present in Australia, Meteorological drought is the most basic and
common, it is a period with less than normal precipitation. Hydrological drought is when water
storages such as dams and lakes, fall below previous storage levels. This is a type of drought does
not need a lack of water to become and issue, it can also be caused by the overuse of water by
people. Agricultural drought is when there is not enough water present for the general amount of
crop production in an area. In 2009, The levels of drought in South Australia continued, this was
caused by a very dry summer. Melbourne had a level 3 restriction of water ... Show more content on

The soil on the top becomes very dry and therefore is very vulnerable to wind erosion. This can very
easily lead to this land becoming unusable and therefore the livestock and crop production that
could or did happen in said area cannot continue. People in cities can be directly affected as well;
the 'Warragamba' water storage, which accounts for 80% of Sydney's water went from 76% full
2002, and then dropped to 42% by 2005. The repercussions of these meant water restrictions which
included limited time to water plants and gardens, this also meant a complete ban of sprinklers and
hoses used on things like cars.
Overall, droughts not only affect the environment and ecosystems that belong to the area in drought,
but in turn also affect people; and in much larger cases, societies and economical things like food
pricing. The impact that drought has can come in many forms and each to their own

Introduction. This Is One Of The Many Problems California
Introduction This is one of the many problems California has been facing even today. Drought has
been a growing problem in California each year. How to tackle this problem is up to government
and many scientists. There have been many case studies determining how and why drought has
devastated the state of California. Water is a necessary and most important resource in California.
Our water comes from groundwater, rivers, or lakes. Since California is facing a tremendous
drought these resources are becoming destroyed. Now there is low measures of water in these lakes
and rivers where we receive our water from. There are agencies that help deliver water to the major
cities which all comes from those lakes and reservoirs. What happens when ... Show more content

What is drought? What causes/affects drought? What things are essential to stop drought? What will
it take to stop drought in California? Will there be money needed? Are there any programs started to
reduce drought? Will the government be involved and what they will do? There will be
laws/regulations needed to prevent drought. Also I believe we as people need to change our habits
and not waste water.
Methods I will utilize this paper by using academic resources, governmental resources, and
newspaper resources. I have gathered a lot of information in relation to drought like from the
Drought Brochure. This brochure explains what a drought is, also talks about the history of
droughts. Furthermore It explains how a draught is caused and the relationship between groundwater
and drought. My academic sources and newspaper sources gave a good insight how the California
drought was caused. There was a lot of information on climate change and temperatures. As I
researched for drought causation mostly everything was on climate change. I managed to find a
great article that talked about the causes of drought lead by climate change and global warming. I
also took advantage of my library sources, I discussed drought with David Drexler who is in the
water resource association he helped clarify where we get our water from, what type of drought is
occurring in California, and what a drought is.

Ausralia Drought
There have been droughts severe droughts around the world infact you have an example. "Australia
has just come through a thirteen–year duration of drought it was catastrophic in that country. The
way that they delt with it was, believe it or not, was concerving water and rain water harvesting. It
wasn't all the high teck stuff and yet we here in California need a desalinization plant. I mean it does
help. But the main strength in what they accomplished in that country of ausralia was the fact that
the worked together they reduced their water reduction through concervation practices and they put
up tank systems on their properties to collect rain water from their gutters. That's how they did it."
Is rain watering something that could make a difference here? " well absolutely, in fact if you were
to go over to Hawaii you would notice that there are a lot of buildings and homes that utilize
rainwater harvesting. Now you have to take into account mother ... Show more content on

The Effects Of Drought On The Hay Industry
The effects of drought on hay as an agricultural resource is a significant, yet overlooked, issue in
Canada. Its effects need to be examined in order to mitigate damage done to the crops themselves,
the agricultural sector, and the economy as a whole. This paper explores the causes, effects and
potential solutions to reducing the effects of drought on hay in the future. This paper also covers the
differences between American and Canadian agriculture, and the current drought that is affecting
Ontario.
Causes
There are many possible causes of meteorological and hydrological droughts, which in turn have
negative effects on the hay industry. A lack of moisture, either through a minimal amount of rainfall
or a groundwater shortage, can stunt hay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(2016) mentions that drought impact studies must be performed of other economic sectors in
drougb–affected regions, such as public health and public water resources, in order to form an
effective drought management plan for the future (p. 134). There is also a need for a long–term
economic analysis of drought, because economic effects of drought do not occur in the first few
years after the initiation of drought (Leister et al., 2015, p. 281). With further economic analyses of
drought, it makes it possible to financially prepare for the effects of future droughts. There is a direct
correlation between drought preparedness and whether or not the affected farmer has experienced
negative drought effects from previous droughts (Coppock, 2011, p. 613). The ability to survive
drought comes from careful planning and flexibility, some ow which only comes from previous
experience (Wilmer et al., 2016, p. 220–221). A combination of warm temperatures and a plentiful
water supple are necessary in order to combat the negative environmental effects of drought and
restore crop production to its normal capacity (Kemper et al., 2012, p. 2). Further explorations into
the future availability of groundwater supplies are also critical to maintaining proper soil moisture

American Droughts Book Review
Droughts, Devastations and Deaths
Between the 19th century and the 20th century, parts of Asia were decimated by drought. A quick
glance might lead one to believe this was a natural disaster, but in his book, Late Victorian
Holocausts, Mike Davis provides a contradictory theory. In Davis's opinion, the encroachment of
western civilization, though not strictly responsible for the droughts, are largely to blame for the
subsequent famines that plagued Asia. He even goes so far as to suggest that the influences of
western civilization resulted in the deaths of millions of Indians and Chinese, who were essentially
murdered. He argues that the European presence (mainly British) in India and the associated
influence on the economies of both India ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Davis's claim that the main perpetrator of this disaster was the British who carelessly exploited the
economies of both these countries without consideration of the effect on the local populace.
Essentially, the British chose to enrich themselves at the expense of the native populace. Certainly,
they had the means to ameliorate the effects of the drought, but believed they would be wasting
money on a population they considered to be 'lesser'. In choosing to continue to supply the world
market, they proceeded to make the situation (possibly) worse than without any intervention. The
social inequalities that arose in the Victorian Era are precisely what Davis claims to have caused the
"developmental gap" that resulted in the "third world" (Davis 16). Davis's Marxists beliefs led him
to approach this portion of history from an unconventional and hitherto unpopular point of view.
Previous historical analyses of these events, from a purely Eurocentric view, excluded certain
important factors that contributed profoundly to the famine and the loss of life. A Eurocentric view
exonerates Britain as a major contributor to the disaster. There is a possibility that there are social
factors that contribute to the degree of devastation. It might be helpful to take different points of

Causes Of Food Insecurity In Ethiopia
Spatial patterns
Ethiopia map of food insecurity
As you can see in the map above about half of Ethiopia has food security or minimal insecurity. In
the half with food insecurity most of it is stressed or crisis. Sadly, there is part of it that is classified
as emergency. Luckily none of Ethiopia is classified as in a famine.
What makes the North–East part of Ethiopia the worst affected is because it had the worst drought
out of Ethiopia.
Priorities on food security
Challenges to food security
Ethiopia has the ability to grow on land and produce food for themselves and sell it to make money
however there is a challenge stopping them. Rain patterns change all the time either ending in
droughts or floods meaning land can't be grown. If a drought happens it will affect millions meaning
they can't produce enough food then he food companies have to produce more and they have to raise
the price. Crops in Ethiopia after a drought
The picture above shows what happens to a crop after a drought. The owners have to then start from
scratch with new crops.
12.7 million smallholders don't have the resources or money to deal with the changes in weather
which means they are likely to not have enough food or water ending in food insecurity. There are
730,000 refugees who all need food which the people who already liv there don't have and they also
don't have the skills to help grow and produce food. The refugees are causing the little food Ethiopia
have to disappear quickly

Drought Problem Essay
There are many serious environmental problems around the world. These problems such as drought,
global warming, and pollution are caused by our actions, mistakes, or just by nature. Out of the
various environmental problems, drought is one of the hazard of nature that is happening throughout
some parts of the world, especially in California, United States. In general, drought is a "period of
dry weather" or "an extended shortage of water" (Jaworski). There are two types of drought
definitions: conceptual and operational definitions. Conceptual definitions help understand the
meaning of drought and its effects. The example definition would be "drought is a protracted period
of deficient precipitation which causes extensive damage to crops, resulting in loss of yield".
Operational definitions help identify the drought's beginning, end, and degree of severity (National
Drought Mitigation Center). However, it is hard to define drought because its impacts vary from
region to region. For instance, drought in Bali, where it is a drought when rain does not fall for six
days, would not be considered a drought in Libya where the annual rainfall is less than 180mm
(USGS). Just as we define drought in many ways, there are also four types of drought:
meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic. First, meteorological drought is
defined on the basis of the degree of dryness and the duration of the dry period or precipitation.

Environment Essay-It's Time To Drought In California
Could you go days, even months, without showering or using a proper toilet? California has been
contemplating on lessening how much water the farmers pump. City citizens believe California
should control the water, while farmers do not want California to limit on how much water they use
because that would prevent them from growing their crops and selling them. If California limits the
aquifer, farmers will struggle with their crops and their businesses as they depend on them for
money to support their living. If they do not regulate water the citizens will have the ongoing
struggle with the drought and having to drive a long distance just to get water. One could support the
idea of putting a limit to groundwater while others would not, while I believe groundwater should be
limited. Consequently, "Just over 95 percent of the state now faces severe drought conditions"
(Source 2). " they rely on [...] water"(Source 2). California has been in a drought for quite some time
now, and the farmers pumping water from their neighbors adds on to the drought since they use
water for their plants and crops which they grow for their businesses. Some residents of California
have struggled with not having water for up to five months, when that was the case no one could

(source 3). If California does limit the water use, the farmers will end up struggling very much with
their crops and businesses. Since farmers depend on their crops for money, it would not be such a
good idea if California puts a limit to the use of water. It is also understood that if the water is

Water Shortage in California is Ruining the Farmers Essay
Water is a precious resource. It is the lifeblood of every living thing on Earth. California is in the
midst of a water crisis. Combined with a three (plus) year drought and many people moving into the
state there is not enough water to support the crops the farmers need to grow. There is also a tiny
little fish that is causing a mess in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. The Delta water pumps were
turned off to prevent the extinction of the tiny little fish. Some farmers have to let their fields sit idle
for the fall and spring planting season. This is causing a lot of problems in California. The pumps
need to be turned back on. The needs of the people should come before that of a fish.
California is an ever–growing state, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta supplies almost two–thirds of the state with water. Many plants
and animals live in the Delta. One of them is a tiny three–inch fish called the Delta smelt. It is due to
the endangerment of this fish that the pumps that supply many of the farmlands in the state with
water to grow crops were shut off. The fish were getting caught in the pumps. This caused the
environmentalists to file a suit to get the pumps shut off. When the suit was won it was hard blow to
the farmers. Having to worry about getting enough rain every year is enough of a burden to them.
Now the water they need to grow crops was shut off for a fish. Humanity is more important than a
tiny fish.
Due to the shut off many farmers did not get the rationing of water they need to plant, so many
fields will sit idle this fall and spring. California produces 53% of the nation's fruits and vegetables.
California is also the leading food producer to the world. Some people do not even know California
is facing a water crisis, and more of them did not know California is the Nation's food producer. In a
recent survey 76% knew of the water crisis; however, only 56% of them knew that California is the
leading food producer. With many of the state's fields sitting idle this fall and spring it is going to
cause the produce prices to increase. It also causes the loss of thousands of jobs. An outraged

Drought In California
Drought, is defined by the National Weather Service as "a deficiency in precipitation over an
extended period, usually a season or more, resulting in a water shortage causing adverse impacts on
vegetation, animals, and/or people." With the possibility of occurring in any climate, droughts have
the potential to be the most devastating natural weather–related disaster in regards to long–term
losses in agriculture, economics, and life. These water crises has been combatted with many types of
solutions, from desalination techniques to shade balls (Cameron), in order to prevent evaporation
from reservoirs. The current drought in California has caused many to sacrifice their daily routines
as a solution for to the effects of water shortage. But the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The economy, agriculture, and natural life of the state will be in turmoil if there are not more actions
and orders put in place to prevent the over consumption of water. This needs to start with preserving
current water resources, especially aquifers and groundwater wells, in order to allow the rebuilding
process of reservoirs to occur. The distribution of water in the state needs to be altered to
accommodate the drought, as the snowpacks and aquifers aren't up to maximum height, meaning
less efficiency. The water acquired through runoff isn't enough to fuel the entire state of California's
needs as important urban developments and agricultural goods are not being watered (USGS). The
winter months usually provide for the entire state as a whole, yet since the beginning of the 2011
drought, many have been forced to change their lifestyles due to the unforeseen circumstances
brought on by the arid climate and drought. All in all, the current distribution of water and the usage
of the water in the entire state is wasteful and damaging to the environment and future. Support for
low–use shower and faucet heads, as well as toilets that use less gallons of water will ultimately be
the best start for the state's solution to the drought. Coupled with executive action by the Governor

Water Crisis in Kenya
In the United States, there is one trillion gallons of water wasted (Mooney). Water is being wasted
every day in the US by: leaky faucets, malfunctioning toilets and faulty sprinkler systems. While
water is being wasted in the US, many underdeveloped countries such as Kenya struggle to have
clean water. Many of the Kenyan residents struggle every day to find a clean water source. In the
continent of Africa there lies Kenya with a population approximately of forty–six million people. A
little over seventeen million people do not have access to clean safe water. More than 30 million
people do not have access to a decent sanitary system. Half of the Kenyan ... Show more content on

Kenya's almost bankrupt government doesn't have enough funds to help develop running pumping
stations. The existing piping that is running currently is deteriorating and need of urgent repair.
Another issue of the water shortage is droughts. Critical droughts in Kenya leave many people
without food and water. The drought effects more than 2.6 million people (Frej). In the last ten
years, Kenya has endured a serious almost critical drought. Global warming plays a key role in the
drought, and it has prolonged the drought longer than expected. The outcome of the drought is that
many Kenyans are not able to grow their crops and keep their livestock alive. Another reason
droughts are being prolonged is because of forest deforestation. Mau the largest forest in Kenya
distributes water to the rivers in Kenya. The six rivers that the forest provides for are: Yala, Nyondo,
Sondu, Mara, Ngiro, and Makalia. Over ten million Kenyans are dependent on these rivers
(Marshall). Many Loggers and Farmers have destroyed a quarter of the Mau's forest. With these
forests getting destroyed, it leads to an increased chance of a runoff. In Kenya, water pollution is a
major issue. Water pollution is "Contamination of water, typically by foreign matter such as
microorganisms, chemicals, industrial or other wastes, or sewage" (Water Pollution). Because of
water pollution, a lot of Kenya's lakes are contaminated with harmful toxins. "Increased

Climate Change and Drought in California
Definition of Drought
Most of us consider drought as a period of dry and hot weather with too little or no rain, and while
any or all of these conditions might be existent during drought, the definition of drought is more
complex and subtle. According to the United States Geological Survey, California Water Science
Center (as cited in Congressional Digest, 2015, p. 2):
A drought is a period of drier–than–normal conditions that results in water–related problems. When
rainfall is less than normal for several weeks, months, or years, the flow of streams and rivers
declines, water levels in lakes and reservoirs fall, and the depth to water in wells increases. If dry
weather persists and water–supply problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mountain water down here, so that our groundwater supply can rest, recharge, and be restored.
Furthermore, the City of Fresno Water Conservation Program has been encouraging activities that
lower water demand in the community to help Fresno meet the many challenges of water supply
management. Another measure is that the State Water Resources Control Board has issued a new
statewide water conservation policy that executes a minimum level of restrictions and stronger fines.
Fresno has also moved to the Stage 2 water shortage contingency plan approved by City Council
which regulates water use; it declares to limit summer outdoor irrigation to two days per week, to
not water every Monday, Thursday, or Friday during summer, to limit winter outdoor irrigation to
one day per week, and not to water every Monday to Friday during winter (as cited in City of Fresno

October 13, 2015 Focus on California and Drought There are many problems with world, but one of
the most difficult problems are global warming and droughts. Global warming leads to droughts,
among other things, and droughts lead to trouble. Droughts are very problematic, because they can
lead to fire hazards, low food cropping, and many other things. Drought is the absents or shortage of
water and water is an absolute must have in the world. There are so many problems because of
drought and people need to find solutions the problems. Climate change affects many factors
associated with drought. Beyond direct economic impacts, a drought can threaten drinkable water
supplies and entire ecosystems, and can even add to increased food prices. California has had the
driest year on record recently. There are different types of drought. Drought can thought as dry,
cracked earth; low water levels, such as lakes and stuff; and barren fields, but these are examples of
different types of drought, each of which is measured differently. Meteorological drought, which is
very specific to the area as average precipitation, may vary considerably spatially. This is a most
often thought of as drought in comparison to precipitation, assessing the degree of dryness (in
relation to a local or area average) and the duration of the dry period. A concern of farmers is

The Dust Bowl (1931–1939) is the name given to parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico,
and Colorado that suffered from extensive farming and natural drought. When homesteaders started
farming and raising cattle on this land, these practices left the soil exposed to the danger of erosion
by the strong winds that blow across the flat plain (Dust Bowl, n.d.). These winds, combined with a
severe drought caused three to four inches of topsoil to blow away. This caused the federal and state
governments to develop programs for soil conservation and rehabilitation (Dust Bowl, n.d.). In the

3. Seek Stakeholder Participation and Resolve Conflict– This is important in communication
because it gives all citizen groups a chance to voice their opinions, and also have a hand in the
drought planning process. It is important that stakeholder's conflicts are resolved as soon as possible
so progress will not be held up later (Wilhite, Hayes, & Knutson, 2005).
NIMS #3. Resource Management 4. Inventory Resources and Identify Groups at Risk– It is crucial
to take an inventory of natural, biological, and human resources. For obvious reasons water is the
most valuable natural resource in this situation; its location, accessibility, and quality. The biological
resources refer to the quality and quantity of grasslands or rangelands, forests, wildlife, and so forth.
Human resources are the labor needed to develop water resources and haul water, process citizen
complaints, provide technical assistance, and direct citizens to available services. It is important to
define the exposure of various parts of the region to drought hazard to determine which groups are
at risk (Wilhite, Hayes, & Knutson, 2005).

Global Warming Caused By Human Emissions
California has for many years being battling with drought. Drought can be defined as a prolonged
period of rainfall below normal, extended decrease of groundwater, or the stunting of vegetation
growth due to a lack of water. In the past four decades, California has weathered many droughts.
These ranged from a short, severe drought from 1976–77 to a prolonged six–year drought in 1987–
92. The latest drought began in 2012, and it includes the driest three–year stretch in 120 years of
recordkeeping. This drought has been more widespread than most, covering the entire state. The
year 2014 was also the hottest on record, which made conditions even drier (Jeffery, Ellen, et al.
2015). Although the drought especially the latest drought period cannot be blamed on climate
change as a result of human activity, it is still a major cause of the same. According to Justin Gillis
in his article in the New York times, he says that, "Global warming caused by human emissions has
most likely intensified the drought in California by 15 to 20 percent, scientists said on Thursday,
warning that future dry spells in the state are almost certain to be worse than this one as the world
continues to heat up" (Justin, G., 2015). So what exactly is considered the main cause of the
persistent drought in California? According to scientists, particularly stubborn "blocking ridge" over
the northeastern Pacific; commonly referred to as the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge, or "Triple R".

how this consumption has been influenced by the most recent historical drought from 2011 to 2016.
Conditions are improving, but unfortunately, California is not completely in the clear (Miller, 2017).
The main cause of the drought cannot be determined (Valentine, 2015), but what is known is that a
mass of warm water in the Pacific Ocean has prevented rainfall from reaching the state (Klusinske,
2015). California is a major agricultural state, producing two–thirds of the nation's fruits and nuts as
well as one–third of the vegetables grown, while producing over 400 commodities in total

Californians to reshape their relationship with nature to have sustainable water use. Stephanie
Pincetl and Terri S. Hogue (2015) demonstrate that there is a dramatic difference in public
perception of water and water use and that those who are the wealthiest are not as compelled to
change their behaviors despite the fact that it is the wealthy who use up to three times more water.
Pincetl and Hogue (2015) also show that it is a lack of strict policy that allows for inefficient use of
water while allowing those who are already suffering to suffer further. Lewis Coser (1957) argues
that conflict is essential to bringing about social change, and that it is stimulatory to the
technological and economic realms of society as it pushes for innovation and prevents a stagnate
state of being. Out of the conflict over water use in California can come technological and political
innovation that can help to alleviate this conflict. The normal response for California is crisis–driven
responses, but it has been shown that these policies increase vulnerability, and certain strategies in

The Effects Of Drought And Its Effects On The Environment
Since we moved into the 21st century, the condition of global environment is one of the most
popular topics, and it created many controversies. Those topics are wide ranged, from the natural
disasters like earthquake, tornado or volcano eruption; to the man–made disasters like nuclear war
or air / water / sound pollutions. As a student, I too am interested and have some concerns for the
planet that we are living in. Among the disasters, drought is the one that I want to learn more about
it. So what is drought? Drought is described as "a period of time when the water supply is
decreasing, and the length of the drought might occur in months or even years" (basicplant). It
occurs in virtually all climatic zones and its characteristics may be different in certain regions.
According to The Ojos Negros Research Group, the characteristics of the drought are "scarcity of
water, low precipitation, and mostly occurred in dry season". Other climatic factors like "high
wind/temperature and low relative humidity" (The Ojos Negros Research Group) are usually related
with the drought. Drought can be put into four categories based on the regions, needs, and
disciplinary approaches. The first type of drought is called Meteorological drought; it is defined on
the "basis degree of dryness [compare to a normal/average amount], and the duration of the dry
period" (National Drought Mitigation Center). Agricultural drought is the second type and it is
similar to the Meteorological drought, but

Exploring What a Drought Is
Drought is a long period of dry weather when there is no rainfall at all for weeks, months or even
years. Rivers and streams stop flowing. Water in pools, ponds, or reservoirs dries out. Plants die.
Drought becomes a natural disaster. Some droughts occur for a very long period of time, and cause
great hardship to people, plants and animals. Every year, droughts take place in many parts of the
world, mostly in deserts. People plan for drought be storing water in wells, water tanks, etc. and by
growing crops that can stay alive in hot and dry weather.

§ Permanent drought occurs in dry desert regions. There is hardly any rainfall, therefore deserts have
drought all the time. However, desert people are good are surviving in these areas because they are

§ Seasonal drought is a feature of places which are very dry for most of the year, with a short rainy
season. Droughts here are predictable. For example, the countries around the Mediterranean Sea
have rains in winter and drought in summer.
§ Contingent drought occurs when the rainy season is very short. There is little rain, and sometimes
it does not rain at all.
§ Unpredictable drought is found in areas where sudden rainfalls or rainbursts can be quite heavy
but can't be predicted.
§ Invisible drought is the effect of scanty rainfall which harms crops and wildlife but does not

Causes and Physical processes of drought
No one really knows why droughts happen. They could be affected by the shape of the land, by

However, it is very demanding of energy and electricity. It does not seem very much more effective
than regular agriculture. In addition to being demanding of electricity, it is not cheap trying to get

radiator to keep the tank of fish at a specific temperature, use grow lights to use aquaponics inside

The Quality Of Relief Food Essay
INTRODUCTION:
Efficiency loss is a situation whereby whenever there is a trade that can be made that makes both
parties better off and is not made. Economics is all about trading to make things work more
effectively. Trade should make both parties better off.
Allocation inefficiency ....Prices play three roles in a market. What is to be produced, how it is to be
produced and who gets the good. In a equilibrium market, price is the main determining factor. A
person who wants the goods most gets the good.
Relief food is food given either directly or indirectly to the people living in areas that face drought
or famine in a given country.
Drought can be defined in a simple conceptual way that it is a prolonged and abnormally dry and hot
period when there is scarcity of water for the normal needs of the affected community or ecosystem
Dependency is relying on someone or something else for aid or support. In this case people who are
mostly affected by drought tend to rely on the government and donors.
Donor in this case refers to the government of Kenya which provides relief food or any other food

The Millenium Drought
For many months now, most of California has been suffering through a drought. Policy makers and
residents of California have been strategizing for a plan to stop the drought. The biggest lesson that
Californians can learn from this is by looking into the past, specifically in Australia, where The
Millennium Drought occurred from 1997 to 2009. During the Millennium Drought in Australia, the
economy and the environment were hit the hardest. While small and large scale farmers were only
affected in a limited fashion, it was mid–sized farming operations that were most impacted.
Regardless of the struggles of the drought, Australia used a series of strategies that helped them to
reform water usage and help the country recover as a whole. Some of

Drought Is A Lack Of Precipitation Essay
Drought is a lack of precipitation over an extended period of time that results in a water shortage for
a particular area. Drought occurs in nearly every climate on earth but depending on the particular
areas annual rainfall can mean different amount of precipitation shortages. It effects both rural and
urban areas of the world as well. Drought is difficult to predict and the effects are underestimated
but with risk management the negative effects of drought can be prevented or reduced. Why plan for
a drought if we do not know if it will happen or not? Droughts are expensive and it costs more to fix
the repercussions than to prevent them. Droughts cost the United States an average of eight billion
dollars a year. Farmers suffer the most from drought; wells run dry, crops fail, and food for livestock
decreases. This keeps small farms from expanding and the costs spread to taxpayers and consumers
who are part of that food system. Urban water supplies decrease because of drought; big cities built
in the western United States such as Los Angeles and Phoenix were developed in rather rainy
seasons for that area so dry seasons were not taken into consideration. Growing populations in dry
areas create a problem because they depend on regular rainfall therefore drought planning is a must.
Understanding risk management is key when preparing for future droughts. How likely is it? What
can happen? What are the impacts? These are all questions that need to be answered in risk

California Drought : Is There Light At The End Of The Tunnel?
California drought: is there light at the end of the tunnel? "If you do not take care of nature, nature
will not take care of you". Those were the words of the late Nobel award winner Professor Wangari
Mathaai. Being a great lover of the environment, she foresaw the numerous effects that lack of
environmental conservation would result it and true to that the world is receiving a big blow from
Mother Nature. Global warming, droughts and famine, irregular climatic changes are among the
effects that have adversely affected the globe and if something is not done and fast, this could get
worse. California has for many years being battling with drought. Drought can be defined as a
prolonged period of rainfall below normal, extended depletion ... Show more content on

According to scientists, particularly stubborn "blocking ridge" over the northeastern Pacific;
commonly referred to as the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge, or "Triple R" – that prevented winter
storms from reaching California during the 2013 and 2014 rainy seasons, is the immediate cause of
the drought. Blocking ridges refer regions of high atmospheric pressure that disrupt typical wind
patterns in the atmosphere.3 Because winds respond to the spatial distribution of atmospheric
pressure, this persistent blocking ridge has led to California remaining dry over a long period of
time. Blocking ridges are not a rare phenomenon especially in the temperate latitudes but the
longevity and size of the Triple R is what is worrying. It dispersed in the 2013's summer months but
came back in fall even stronger. The condition went through to winter a period when California
receives most of its rainfall. The Triple R affects rainfall by diverting the jet stream (high speed air
currents) towards far north. Due to this, pacific storms bypass California as well as Washington and
Oregon resulting to snow and rain that would fall on the

A Discussion On The California Drought
Drought Research Paper In a discussion on the California drought, one controversial issue has been
that if the people in California should be worried about relocating somewhere else. One the one
hand, the drought not only affects the people, but animals, and crops too. On the other hand, some
hope that the government will intervene and try to do something to prevent this disaster from
escalating so people don't have to move out of the area. The government should intervene and help
find a solution to the problem so people, animals, and agricultural can continue to survive. My
brother, Edgar lives on the Garcia Ranch he is surrounded by mother nature. There is the smell of
dry dirt, and when the wind blows, you can smell the citrus groves, that can be seen everywhere.
The taste of the fresh fruit that has grown from the trees, it tastes better than the ones you buy at the
local store. Waking up at six o'clock in the morning from the rooster crowing at the top of their
lungs, lets my brother know that it's time to get up and do his chores. As, he walks out of his door,
he can see the sunset connecting to the horizon– the beauty of nature is at its finest. I love going to
visit him at his ranch because I get to enjoy the peace and quiet that I would not get in the city. Now
with the lack of water, what use to be a good place to come to now feels as this little piece of earth
goes thirsty. It is difficult for my brother because he is having trouble water getting water for
