Watershed management By Avandhika A 2022001030

What is a watershed ? A watershed is a geographical area that channels rainfall and snowmelt to creeks, streams, and rivers, eventually leading to larger bodies of water like lakes, seas, or oceans. It includes all the land where water flows toward a common water body.

WATERSHED MANAGEMENT Definition : Watershed management is the process of managing land and water resources in a watershed to ensure their sustainable use. Purpose : Maintain water quality, prevent soil erosion, support biodiversity, and ensure water availability for agriculture and human use.

Mangement practices Afforestation & Reforestation: Planting trees to retain soil and water. Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting and storing rainwater to recharge groundwater. Contour Plowing & Terracing: Reduces runoff and prevents soil erosion on slopes. Check Dams: Small dams to slow water flow and enhance groundwater recharge.

Importance of watershed management Water Conservation : Increases groundwater recharge and reduces surface runoff. Flood Control : Manages water flow to prevent flooding. Soil Conservation : Prevents soil erosion, essential for agriculture. Biodiversity : Supports diverse ecosystems. Sustainable Agriculture : Ensures water for farming and maintains soil health.

Challenges Deforestation: Reduces water retention and increases soil erosion.
Urbanization: Increases runoff and disrupts natural water cycles.
Pollution: Contaminates water bodies and harms ecosystems.
Climate Change: Unpredictable rainfall, droughts, and increased flooding.

Case studies Hivre Bazar (India): Community-driven watershed management leading to water conservation.
Loess Plateau (China): Reforestation and terracing transformed degraded land into productive farmland.
Chesapeake Bay Program (USA): Multi-state initiative to restore the health of the watershed through pollution reduction.
