GRADE 11- HUMSS

Rules: * Prepare your writing materials * Raise your hand when you want to answer * Pay attention to our discussion and participate in our activity

Add your first bullet point here Add your second bullet point here Add your third bullet point here What do you call the solid materials that compose most of the Earth? ROCKS

Add your first bullet point here Add your second bullet point here Add your third bullet point here What are the three types of rocks? Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic rock

Add your first bullet point here Add your second bullet point here Add your third bullet point here They are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten (melted) rock. IGNEOUS ROCKS

Add your first bullet point here Add your second bullet point here Add your third bullet point here This type of rock is formed when rocks are subjected to high heat, high pressure, hot mineral-rich fluids or, more commonly, some combination of these factors. METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Add your first bullet point here Add your second bullet point here Add your third bullet point here It includes sandstone, limestone, and shale. SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

ACTIVITY: MATERIALS: a. Two pieces of paper b. Scissor Match Procedure: 1. Tear one paper using scissor, observe, and record your answer. 2. Burn the other paper (with teacher supervision), observe, and record your answer. 3. Based on your observation, differentiate the changes after tearing and burning.

ACTIVITY:

ACTIVITY:

Title Layout Subtitle WEATHERING

OBJECTIVES: a. compare and contrast the two types of weathering: b. identify the agents of weathering and, c. explain how weathering affects the rocks.

WEATHERING -process of breaking down rocks into small particles. -an important process that helps shape the earth’s surface. -the breaking of rocks results in different landforms.

Coron Palawan, Rock Formation Benagil , Batanes

Miniloc Island Palawan The Wave, Arizona Skullrock , USA

TWO TYPES OF WEATHERING MECHANICAL WEATHERING - physica l - breakdown of rocks into pieces without any change in composition

Factors: Pressure- collision of rocks creates extreme pressure which weathers rocks . Temperature- most materials expand when they are heated, and contract when they are cooled.

Factors: Frost Wedging- Splitting or breaking up of rocks by the pressure of frozen water broken rocks Abrasion- is the rubbing, scouring, or scraping of rocks through friction

Factors: Organic Activity- The roots grow causing penetration into the crack, expand, and in the long run, break the rock.

Factors: Burrowing Animals- animals that burrow underground like rabbit and ants can also cause weathering by loosening and breaking apart rocks.

TWO TYPES OF WEATHERING 2. CHEMICAL WEATHERING - there is a change in the composition of rocks due to chemical reactions.

FACTORS: Dissolution- rocks, when in water react with acids in the water and dissolve. The clue is the presence of small holes to rocks.

When Halite (Rock Salt) and Calcite (Calcium carbonate) dissolved in water, it results to the formation of Stalactites and stalagmites in caves.

FACTORS: Hydrolysis- when rocks sit in water for extended periods of time they begin to break down and have a clay-like texture.

FACTORS: Oxidation- breaking down of rocks by oxygen in/and water . - Rusting is an example of this reaction.

QUESTIONS: What happened when you rub the rock samples? How does vinegar and water affect the rocks? What type of weathering is activity A? Activity B? How can you say so ? D. Based on the said activity, how does weathering affects the rocks?

Evaluation Direction: In a ¼ sheet of paper, identify the following agents of weathering and write your answers on the space provided before each number. _____________1.It is the rubbing, scouring, or scraping of rocks through friction. _____________2. When rocks sit in water for extended periods of time they begin to break down and have a clay-like texture. ____________3. Splitting or breaking up of rocks by the pressure of frozen water broken rocks. ____________4. Most materials expand when they are heated, and contract when they are cooled .

____________ 5. Rocks, when in water react with acids in the water and dissolve. The clue is the presence of small holes to rocks . ____________ 6. Plants break up rocks with their growing roots or plant acids help dissolve rocks. ____________7. What type of weathering agent activities such as digging, quarrying and cultivating land? ____________8. It is the breaking down of rocks by oxygen in/and water. ____________9. Animals that burrow underground causes weathering by loosening and breaking apart rocks is an example of what weathering agent? ____________10. What type of weathering causes stalactites and stalagmites in caves?

ASSIGNMENT: Based on the discussion, complete the concept map using the words below and write it in your notebook. Hydrolysis Organic Activity Chemical Frost Wedging Burrowing Dissolution Abrasion Pressure Physical Weathering Temperature Oxidation Wind Human Activities Water
