Tools and Materials in Embroidery Lesson 1

What is Embroidery ?

The term embroidery is an English word derived from the old French embroiders meaning edge and border .

EMBROIDERY

Development of Philippine Embroidery

Embroidery was introduced into the Orient by the Netherlanders in the 15th century. It was bought by the Spaniards into the Philippines.

Embroidery in the Philippines has made a wonderful growth, and it rivals the best work done in Switzerland, a country noted for its exquisite embroidery.

The Spanish nuns in the convents were the first to make articles with embroidery work during their leisure time. Since then, it became so popular that women started to enjoy it, creating designs of their own.

In the beginning embroideries were done by hand . But since the advent of technology and the invention of the sewing machine , people are now engaged in the machine embroidery.

Today, because of the fast growth of the industry, elegance of designs and fineness of workmanship, Filipinos export articles with embroidery work.

Embroidery Tools and Materials

Embroidery work is best achieved if correct tools and materials are used. MATERIALS OR SUPPLIES - are those that are consumed in finishing a project. TOOLS - refer to small or handy devices/instruments used in sewing.

Embroidery scissor - for trimming scallops, clipping threads, and cutting large eyelets.

Embroidery hoop - It is use to keep the fabric stretched while embroidery stitches are applied on the design. INNER HOOP

Embroidery needle – A short piece of steel. FINE POINT EYE

S izes 1-10 Sharp-pointed Large eyes for easy threading T hey are used for most standard embroidery stitchery. Crewel

S izes 13-26 Sharp-pointed Large eyes for easy threading Thicker and longer Chenille

S izes 13-26 Blunt point Large eyes for easy threading Thicker and longer Tapestry

Thimbles - made from metal or plastic . sizes 6 (small) to 12 (large)

j Needle threader – is use for easier threading especially by those sewers with poor eyesight.

Tape measure - use for measuring more than one-foot distance or materials.

Pin cushion - a place for pins and needles.

Gauge- use to measure short distance.

4 DAY 3

Pounce - is fine powder used in transferring design by pricking method.

Pounce

Tracing paper - used for tracing designs. Tracing wheel - used to transfer markings from sewing patterns onto fabric.

Sewing Box - use to keep together the embroidery tools and materials.

Bag - to keep work clean and fresh, have a bag made from washable material to hold your work when not busy on it .

Water color brush - use for transferring the design using pricking and pouncing methods.

Fabric - sometimes referred to as cloth , are of great variety and they differ in material, weight, weave, design, and color.

Three types of Fabric

1. Common weave Includes most tightly woven fabrics with a relatively smooth surface like linen, wool and cotton.

2. Even weave Intended for hardanger embroidery since the number of threads per square inch is same for both warp and weft.

3. Basket weave C ommonly used by beginners.

COMMON EVEN BASKET

Thread - is available in various types. They differ in terms of Texture F iber content Number of strands C olors .

They can be bought in skeins, balls or spools.

Lesson 2 EMBROIDERY STITCHES

What is Embroidery Stitch ?

A method for stitching designs onto fabric using a needle and thread. Embroidery Stitch

EMBROIDERY STITCHES RUNNING STITCH BACK STITCH HERRING BONE STITCH SPLIT STITCH BLANKET STITCH STEM STITCH CHAIN STITCH LAZY DAISY STITCH CROSS STITCH FRENCH KNOT STITCH

THREE EMBROIDERY STITCHES RUNNING STITCH BACK STITCH HERRINGBONE STITCH

1. Running Stitch – is one of the basic stitches in hand embroidery, so it is rather easy to do.

A B C D E F G H I J

1. RUNNING STITCH 1. Bring the needle up at the starting point of your line (point A) and then bring your needle down in a distance from where you started (point B). This way you made a straight stitch (A-B). STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 2. To continue the line, bring the needle up through the fabric again at a distance from the previous stitch and make a new one (C-D) following the steps before. 3. As you keep going you will get a line of straight stitches. You might want to keep them same size and placed in the same distance from each other, to make the look of the line more consistent.

2. Back Stitch – is made by taking the thread backward.

A B C D E F G H

2. BACK STITCH 1 2 3 4 Step 1. Bring the thread through A and take it in through B. This creates one stitch. Step 2. Bring the thread through C and take it in through B. This way, we are creating a stitch by taking the thread backward. Step 3. Bring the thread through D and take it in through C. Continue this pattern to finish the design. Step 4. A finished line of Back Stitch will look like this.

3. Herringbone Stitch – is made of crosses that are not cut exactly in the middle, but in quarters.

A E B C D F G I H K J M L

3. HERRINGBONE STITCH Step 1. Bring the needle out through the first stitch line at A. Now, take the needle in through, which lies diagonally across A on the second stitch line. Then, take the needle back out through, which lies near B. Step 2. Now, the same procedure will be worked on the first stitch line. Take the needle diagonally across to D and bring the needle back out through E. Step 3. Continue to make such crosses on both stitch lines alternately. Make sure the diagonal stitches are parallel to each other to bring out the best look. Step 4. A finished sequence of herringbone stitch would like this.

Do you have any questions? Do you have any questions?

ACTIVITY Direction: Identify the name of stitch describe on the statement below. _____________ 1. It is made by taking the thread backward than the conventional forward motion, and thus the name. ______________ 2. It is made of crosses that are not cut exactly in the middle, but in quarters. ______________ 3. It is the basic and easiest stitch.

Does knowing these three embroidery stitches(running, back, and herringbone) will help you in your daily life? How?

TRUE OR FALSE Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct, otherwise write FALSE. _______1. Herringbone stitch is made of crosses that are not cut exactly in the middle. _______2. Back stitch is the easiest stitch. _______3. Back stitch is made by taking the thread backward. _______4. Running stitch is one of the basic stitches. _______5.
