PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVES ON ART
In Platos’s The Republic , paints a picture as imitators and art as mere imitation. In his description of the ideal republic, Plato advises against the inclusion of art as a subject in the curriculum and the banning of artists in the Republic . Art appreciation 12 ART AS AN IMITATION
In Plato’s metaphysics or view of reality, the things in this world are only copies of the original, the eternal, and the true entities that can be only found in the World of Forms . Art appreciation 13 ART AS AN IMITATION
For example, the chair that one sits on is not a real chair. It is an imperfect copy of the perfect “chair” in the World of Forms. Plato was convinced that artists merely reinforce the belief. Art appreciation 14 ART AS AN IMITATION
Plato was deeply suspicious of arts and artist for two reason: They appeal to the emotion rather to the rational faculty of men. They imitate rather than lead one to reality. Art appreciation 15 ART AS AN IMITATION
Art is just an imitation of imitation. A painting is just an imitation of nature, which is also just an imitation of reality in the World of Forms. Art appreciation 16 ART AS AN IMITATION
Aristotle agreed with Plato that art is a form of imitation. However, Aristotle considered art as an aid to philosophy in revealing the truth. Art appreciation 17 ART AS AN Representation
Plato thought that art is an imitation of another imitation, Aristotle conceived of art as representing possible version of reality. For Aristotle, all kinds of art do not aim to represent reality as it is. Provides a version of possibilities of reality. Art appreciation 18 ART AS AN Representation
In Aristolelian worldview, art serves two particular purposes: Art allows for the experience of pleasure (horrible experience can be made an object of humor) Art also has an ability to be instructive and teach its audience things about life (cognitive) Art appreciation 19 ART AS AN Representation
Immanuel Kant, in his Critique of Judgement considered the judgement of beauty, the cornerstone of art, as something that can be universal. Kant recognized that judgement of beauty is subjective. Art appreciation 20 ART AS A disinterested judgement
However, even subjective judgements are based on some universal criterion for the said judgement. Art appreciation 21 ART AS A disinterested judgement
“I like this painting” “This painting is beautiful. The first is clearly a judgement of taste (subjective), while the second is an aesthetic judgement (objective) Art appreciation 22 ART AS A disinterested judgement
“I like this painting” “This painting is beautiful. The first is clearly a judgement of taste (subjective), while the second is an aesthetic judgement (objective). Art appreciation 23 ART AS A disinterested judgement
Making an aesthetic judgement requires us to be disinterested. In other words, we should try to go beyond our individuals tastes and preferences so that we can appreciate art from a universal. Art appreciation 24 ART AS A disinterested judgement
According to Leo Tolstoy, art plays a huge role in communication to its audience’s emotions that the artist previously experienced. Art appreciation 25 Art as a communication of emotion
In the same that language communicates information to other people. Art communicates emotions. Art appreciation 26 Art as a communication of emotion
Art is given a unique opportunity to serve as a mechanism for social unity. Art is central to man’s existence because of feelings and emotions of people from past and present. Art appreciation 27 Art as a communication of emotion
LET’S WRAP IT! Art appreciation 28 Art remained relevant in our daily lives because most of it played some form of function for man. Art has been forefront of giving color to man’s existence. Also, the different functions are personal, social , and physical.
