What is a state Agency? A state agency is a public agency supported or funded by the state in order to carry out functions related to various Government departments. In the case of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media there are many state agencies including: Sport Ireland Tourism Ireland Office of Public Works The Heritage Council The Arts Council Office of Public Works

Tourism Ireland is responsible for marketing the island of Ireland overseas as a leading holiday destination. They 'deliver world-class marketing programmes in over 20 markets across the world and reach a global audience of over 600 million each year.'  Priority Markets: Great Britain United States Germany  France It is estimated that this (marketing) exposure is worth an estimated €350/£291 million in equivalent advertising value. Helps to influence tourism product development here on the island of Ireland by sharing our insights on global tourism trends and the changing needs of overseas consumers with the Tourist Boards and with other tourism industry partners. Current Global Campaign – Fill Your Heart With Ireland / Home of Halloween Tourism Ireland’s Board of Directors is appointed by the North South Ministerial Council and represents tourism industry interests on the island of Ireland (Tourism Ireland, 2022).

Emerging Markets: The British-Irish Visa Scheme has opened up new opportunities from China and India, making it easier for visitors from those countries to come to the island of Ireland; the scheme allows Chinese and Indian nationals to visit both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, using a single visa. Tourism Northern Ireland - Tourism Northern Ireland (Tourism NI) is responsible for the development of tourism and the marketing of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination to domestic tourists, from within Northern Ireland, and to visitors from the Republic of Ireland. The strategic aims of Tourism NI are to develop tourism in NI via:  Tourism enterprise  The development of world-class products, experiences and events; and  The promotion of Northern Ireland as a must-see destination to markets which offer the greatest potential for growth.

Tourism NI work closely with Tourism Ireland in developing strategies and campaigns to increase and develop tourism in Northern Ireland. This includes both domestic, all-Ireland and International Travel. The Office of Public Works The OPW's responsibilities relate to three main areas: Estate Portfolio Management Heritage Services Flood Risk Management

OPW The OPW manages 780 heritage sites, including national monuments, historic parks, gardens and buildings. The Office of Public Works (OPW) was born out of the 'Board of  Works' which was founded in 1831. As well as having public funds, the OPW also operated as a lending agency. It had the power to give loans to establish, extend or improve any existing or proposed public works, provided the project was considered feasible. During the Great Famine the OPW was place in charge of running relief works by means of Treasury loans. From the late 1850s, it was given responsibility for looking after police barracks, coastguard stations, national schools, post offices, customs buildings, the royal universities and lunatic asylums. OPW Heritage services provided by the OPW are delivered via: The National Monuments Service  NMS The National Historic Properties Service NHP  / Estate Management State Art Collection – Art & OPW Visitors Support Unit / Visitor Service Unit - ( Guides ) Built Heritage:     In 2016, 6.6 million visitors came to these sites to enjoy them, their      interpretive displays and the pamphlets and newsletters provided. Many more millions of visitors enjoy unmanned sites.

National Parks and Wildlife Service - "The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is fully integrated in the Heritage Division of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage." NPWS  /  Website

The Responsibilities of the NPWS: Protections of Habitats – Designation of SAC / SPA / NHA'S Licensing – Regarding Wildlife Areas Education Regarding Natural Heritage Maintain and Monitor species and habitats Maintain and Develop Irelands National Parks National Biodiversity Plan Implementation / Maps Work with other bodies concerning that impact on natural heritage

The NPWS are also responsible for Irelands now 8 National Parks: Boyne Valley National Park Wicklow National Park Kerry Seas National Park Killarney National Park The Burren National Park Connemara National Park Wild Nephin National Park Glenveigh National Park
