Introduction and Prevalence of Incivility Incivility is a disrespectful behavior that violates social expectations Studies show it is highly prevalent in the united states 76 % of healthcare workers reported incivility at work Most common source of incivility was from staff members Patients and patient’s families followed in the reported cases list Negatively impacts healthcare workers Shows the importance of addressing the issue of incivility (wilder& Kennedy, 2020 )
Horizontal Violence as a form incivility Refer to hostile behaviors among colleagues who are at the same level Includes intimidation, belittling, gossiping and rumor spreading Creates a toxic working environment compromising patients care quality Contributing factors include; pressure and stress and lack of conflict resolution avenues Power dynamics leads to the problem because of dominance exertion(Ruplin & McCarthy, 2019).
Non verbal incivility They are disrespectful and hostile and don’t use words. An example is eye rolling or dismissing gestures when one asks a question. these characteristics create a negative effect on patient care It erodes respect and trust between colleagues and decreases productivity Clear behavior standard is needed to promote respect and inclusivity ( Vahidi et al, 2017).
Microaggression as a form of incivility Unintentional form of discrimination that is indirect and subtle Include making assumptions about the patient’s background Exclusion of a person from a conversion. Mostly affects nursing students during clinical rotations They make a person feel disrespected, ignored and disrespected Reduction of trust among healthcare providers (Ruplin & McCarthy, 2019).
Impacts of Incivility on the work environment Increased stress, burnout, anxiousness and disengaged Decreased teamwork and collaboration due to a hostile work environment Reduced trust and respect among colleagues due to a toxic environment Negative impact on patient care due to mistakes hence negative outcomes (Ruplin & McCarthy, 2019).
Strategy to Promote a Culture of Respect and Civility Provision of education and training on the respective communication Establishment of policies and expected behaviors in the workplace Supervisors and leaders in the setup should lead by example Fostering teamwork and collaboration culture Regular reminders on expected code of conduct ( Abate & Greenberg, 2023).
The strategy of Addressing Underlying Issues Underlying issues addressed by fostering psychological capital and proactive personality Address stress, workload, and job insecurity, which tend to elevate incivility Done through incentives like the promotion of positive psychological resources Leadership development programs will help in minimizing incivility resilience building skills and Stress management programs help employees cope with the effects of incivility (Arora&Dhiman,2020).
The strategy of Establishing a System of reporting Incivility Having an anonymous reporting system Designating a team responsible for complains Safe and confidential reporting system Provide education and training of the system Reported incidents follow-up and holding people accountable (Abate & Greenberg,2023)
Conclusion Incivility can take many forms and shapes, from verbal to nonverbal Not addressing the problem leads to decreased job satisfaction Leads to absenteeism due to absenteeism Negatively affect patient outcomes due to errors Damage the reputation of an organization Need to solve incivility
