Theincreasingdemandforelectricalenergytosustainglobaldevelopmentrequiresconsistentheavyinvestmentinpower
supplygeneration.However,inadditiontocomplexmediumandlongtermplanning,theseinvestmentsrelyonnaturalresources,
whicharebecomingdepletedduetoconstantpressuresupontheenvironment.Thebeststrategy,therefore,tomaintainenergy
supplyintheshorttermistoavoidwastageandincreaseenergyefficiency.Electricmotorsplayamajorroleinthisstrategy;
sincearound40%ofglobalenergydemandisestimatedtoberelatedtoelectricmotorapplications.
Asaconsequenceofthisneedtoreduceenergyconsumptionandcarbondioxideemissions,manyGovernmentsworldwide
haveimposedlocalRegulations,alsoknownasMEPS(MinimumEnergyPerformanceStandards)tonumeroustypesof
equipment,includingelectricmotors.
WhilstthespecificrequirementsoftheseMEPSdifferslightlybetweencountries,theimplementationofregionalstandardssuchas
ABNT,IEC,MG-1,whichdefinetheefficiencylevelsandtestmethodstodeterminetheseefficiencies,allowastandardizationofthe
definition,measurementandpublicationformatforefficiencydataamongstmotormanufacturers,simplifyingthecorrectmotors’
selection.
