Slide Content

Know your instrument- Analytical w eighing balance & Needle cutter Presenter : Dr. Keerthi Rajan M (JR3) Moderator : Dr. Shakeel Ahmad (SR) Peer support : Dr. Shubham Biswas (JR3) Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, UP, India- 226003 Email: [email protected]

Contents Introduction Principle Parts Standard Operating Procedure Uses Precautions Needle Cutter 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 2

Specific learning objectives At the end of this teaching learning session, audience will be able to Explain the working principle, parts and standard operating procedure of analytical weighing balance Enumerate the precautions and uses of the instrument Explain how to use a needle cutter 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 3

Introduction Used to measure weight of a substance Analytical weighing balance is a highly accurate laboratory balance designed to determine an object’s mass precisely It yields readability to four decimal places ( upto 0.0001 gm/ 0.01mg) Range - 0.0001 gm to 220 gm 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 4

Principle 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 5 Electromagnetic Force(EM) Restoration

07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 6 Principle Unknown weight placed on weighing pan displaces it Weighing pan is connected to EM coil Current passes through coil generating a counteracting EM force Intensity of force generated is directly proportional to unknown weight Current used to generate the restoring force Translated into a displayed number that is shown to the user

Tare Display On/Off Cal Draft shields Balance Pan Antidraft Ring 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 7 Door handle M ode Parts Level indicator

Parts Power button (on/off button) - to power on and off the machine Balance plate (Pan) - container/paper to hold the sample ‘Re -Zero’ / ‘Tare’ button - to rebalance & bring it back to neutral/zero Mode button - measurement conversion system can be changed Draft shields - to offer protection from outside factors (air, dust) Display panel - displays results, errors, information 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 8

Pre-requisites Make sure table is free from any vibrations Ensure surface is free from dust or moisture Before using ensure the balance is calibrated Check whether all the doors are closed If some fluctuations seen - press Tare button 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 9 How calibration is done?

Standard operating procedure Set up and warm up Clean the weighing pan Check the balance is on and calibrated before using Press power button - Machine will come out of standby mode Place the weighing container/paper 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 10

Tare the balance Keep the substance and w eigh it Wait for 5-10 secs, r ecord the Measurement Remove the Sample Clean the Balance Turn Off the Balance 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 11

Factors affecting readings Temperature Vibrations Chemical reaction Air currents Calibration Magnets Finger prints 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 12

Applications Scientific Research : Precise measurement of chemicals & substances Pharmaceuticals : Precise measurement of drug ingredients Chemical Laboratories : Accurate weighing of reagents & samples Research : Detailed analysis requiring precise weight measurements Environmental Testing : Measuring small quantities of pollutants 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 13

Precautions The balance should be kept calibrated The standard weights should not be touched with hands The weighing process should be done in environment free of vibrations, under controlled humidity & temperature Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and place the balance away from excessive air drafts 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 14

NEEDLE CUTTER Used to ensure the safe disposal of used needles and prevent injuries or contamination by using a manual needle cutter 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 16

Handle Inner movable cylinder Needle Collector 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 17 Outer fixed cylinder Hole into which the needle is inserted

Standard operating procedure Place the manual needle cutter on a stable surface Ensure that needle cutter and disposal container are within easy reach After using syringe, carefully hold it with the needle still attached Insert the needle into the designated slot or aperture on the needle cutter Apply gentle pressure downwards on the lever to cut the needle 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 18

Summary Electronic analytical balance is highly accurate, to determine an object’s mass precisely with range - 0.0001 gm to 220 gm Principle is electromagnetic force restoration, used to measure weight for research purposes Needle cutter is used for safe disposal of used needles 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 20

Specific learning objectives achieved By the end of this teaching learning session, we were able to Explain the working principle, parts and standard operating procedure of analytical weighing balance Enumerate the precautions and uses of the instrument Explain how to use a needle cutter 07-03-2025 Dr. Keerthi Rajan M 21
