Welding power sources & accessories of AC & DC PREPARED BY: MAHDI KARIM . ERBIL TECHNICAL ENGINEERING COLEGE lecturer: assist. Prof. Dr . Gailan Ismail hassan Welding technology
OBJECTIVES Identify current types. Classify welding power sources. Comparison between power sources. Limitations. 2
What is current? Almost all of the welding machines require electricity Electric current may be either: AC DC Current is the flow of electrical charge carriers,
Welding power sources: Welding machines range from small types to large industrial types. AC – maximum OCV* 80 V DC – maximum OCV 110 V Welding machines: There are various types of welding machines available to accommodate the wide range of welding processes OCV * Open circuit voltages
What is Transformer? Simple to use High duty cycle Inexpensive Indestructible Dangerous Not practical for heavy industrial use Not multiprocessing (only CC) Transformer is a device that transfer electric energy from AC circuit to one or more circuits. Welding transformer is used in AC machines to change alternating current from the power line into low voltage .
What is rectifier? Rectifier converts AC to DC Flow electric only in one direction High efficiency Multiprocessing (both CC/CV) Practical for industrial use Single phase and three phase output Safe Large and heavy Expensive Not as simple as transformer
What is inverter? An inverter welding machine converts alternate current to a lower usable voltage output. For instance, from 240V AC power supply to 20V DC power output. It has a very high frequency in the range of 20,000 HZ– 100,000 HZ Low power consumption. Small size and light weight Provide superior control of the electric arc. Comes with a cooling fan to safeguard the parts from heat. Multiprocessing (CC/CV) Expensive repair costs Less durable Low duty cycle
What is generator? Generator is what creates electricity, it could be AC generator or DC generator . Powerful Most durable Conduct electricity Multiprocessing (CC/CV) Heavy and big Extremely expensive to purchase Dangerous requires fuel hence costs more
Comparison between AC & DC welding machines [SMAW , TIG, SAW ] can perform on AC machines [SMAW , TIG, SAW ] can perform on DC machines
CC & CV Direct-current (DC) power supplies can be constant-voltage (CV) or constant-current (CC). Whereas AC-current power supplies can be only (CC).
Recommended Power Source Output Type by Arc Welding Process To utilize a simpler design and keep purchasing costs lower, welding power sources are generally designed to be used with just one or two types of welding processes. So a basic stick machine will have CC output only, as it is intended for stick welding only. A TIG machine will also have CC output only, as it is intended for TIG and stick welding only. Conversely, a basic MIG machine will have CV output only, as it is intended for MIG and flux core welding only
