Health Defined According to WHO, Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO ILL-HEALTH

CELL DEATH Cell death is the event of a biological cell ceasing to carry out its functions. 5

6 HOW CELL DEATH OCCURS Every day, more than 50 billion cells die in our bodies. Cell death has 2 major kinds: 1. Programmed Cell Death The cell ceases to carry out its functions and dies to be replaced by new ones. This type of cell death is further categorized into: a. Apoptosis b. Autophagy 2. Necrosis : This cell death is due to factors such as disease and injury.

7 How Does Cell Death Impact Health? Many diseases are associated with abnormal cell death. Some examples of this are: Disease Type Impact of Cell Death Cancer Cancer cells often resist cell death, even after anti-cancer treatment. Autoimmunity e.g. Lupus, type 1 diabetes Immune cells that attack the body’s own tissues normally die. If this cell death does not occur it can cause diseases such as lupus or type 1 diabetes. Viral infection Viruses need to keep a cell alive in order to reproduce. Cell death can therefore prevent viral replication. Heart Attack Many cells, including those in the heart and brain, trigger their apoptosis machinery when they lose their blood supply.

WHAT IS AGING? Aging takes place in a cell , an organ , or the total organism with the passage of time. It is a process that goes on over the entire adult life span of any living thing. At the biological level, ageing results from the impact of the accumulation of a wide variety of molecular and cellular damage over time leading to a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity, a growing risk of disease and ultimately death. 8
