What is Rom-com ? A rom-com is a romantic comedy, Romantic comedy films are films with light-hearted, humorous plotlines, centered on romantic ideals such as that true love is able to surmount most obstacles.
Analysis of advertisement methods When analysing Rom-Coms its evident that the main characters are always a feature of advertisement methods e.g. film posters, this method of advertisement tends to mean the characters should be well known acters that will trigger a audience or fan base. Methods of advertisement such as commercials are also a huge part of raising awareness of a new film, this form of advertisement can capture a audience of millions of people, this means that the most gripping or comedic elements of the film should be arranged in to a montage that allows people to get a insight into the film. The overall design of the posters/billboards/dvd cover should be aesthetically pleasing, this means that with as little image as possible should give a insight into the film e.g. the dvd cover for pretty little woman shows the woman's dominance over the main male character through the image showing she is able to tie him down.
Top three most popular Rom-coms 1. Pretty woman 2. When Harry met Sally 3. Sleepless in Seattle. Originally “Pretty Woman” was to be a dark warning tale about prostitution in Los Angeles. Pretty Woman was seen as romantic comedy, It was widely successful at the box office, and it became one of the highest money-makers of 1990 with a large budget. Today it is one of the most financially successful entries in the romantic comedy genre, with an estimated gross income of $463.4 million. It is considered by many critics to be the most successful movie in the genre. “Pretty Woman” remained number one at the box office for 4 weeks and on the top ten for 16 weeks. “Sleepless in Seattle” was at the time the most successful old-style romantic comedy of all-time with $126 million in ticket sales. Twenty years later, "Sleepless in Seattle" is still well known, this is because of Ephron's sharp dialogue and the characteristic goodness and charm projected by both Hanks and Ryan.
What makes a Rom-com a Rom-com ? Romantic comedies or rom-coms are a mixture of to genres that have some funny, happy and maybe sad elements. And they all start the same. A boy and a girl will meet as if it was bound to be. They have fun, go out and some time later some sort of problem occurs that will ruin the relationship, for instance love, sex and other drugs she pushes him away because she doesn't want him to suffer from her because she has a disease. Then everything goes sour, they girls falls back but the boys will try to prove his love to her anyway possible. After a few failed attempts the girl will either realise she is wrong and go back to him or someone will tell her to go get him back before its to late. She calls him or meets him in person where there are a few tears but mostly happiness and then ends.
Boy Girl They both meet They have fun and spend time with each other. A problem occurs and things turn sour One of them decides they don’t want to be together but the other one still does. (normally the women chooses to leave) The person still in love will try to prove that he still loves her. She will keep sending him back but he will keep on trying to prove his love She starts to listen to him, her feelings come back and she wants him back He goes to her again and she takes him back so things go back to normal
When analysing Rom-Coms I found out that over all of the covers there is always the main characters, they are always smiling ad mostly being bullied by the woman. For example the 3 Rom-coms I was comparing were, The Proposal, 50 First dates and Pretty woman. Pretty woman and the Proposal both have the cover of which the woman is bullying the man whereas in 50 first dates the main characters are sat together with no harassment involved, only to later find out why she’s not strangling him yet. The 3 Rom-Coms I chose to analyse were all directed by different people but yet again, while The Proposal and Pretty woman have basic white and boring backgrounds, 50 first dates is different because it has a completely different design due to it having atmosphere, The guy is sitting down with what seems to be a guitar while there are sitting on a picnic blanket and by the sea together Ryan's analysis
