A. Dictionary Definitions Semantic is used to describe things that deal with the meanings of words and sentences (Cambridge University press & assessment). Semantic is the study of meaning that relating to meaning in language or of relating to semantics (Merriam Webster).

1. Definition of Semantics Semantics is the study of the relationships between linguistic forms and entities in the world; that is, how words literally connect to things. Semantics involves : D econstruction of words S ignals S entence structure

2. Definition of Meaning Semantics is the study of meaning, but what do we mean by “meaning”? Meaning has been given different definitions in the past. Meaning equals connotation. The meaning is simply the set of associations that a word evokes, and it is the meaning of a word defined by the images that its users connect to it.

3. Sense Relations F ew of the ways in which words can be semantically related ( Betti , 2021b: 5): Synonymy – Begin and start, Big and large, Youth and adolescent Antonymy – Big and small, Come and go, Up and down Polysemy – Bright (shining) and bright (intelligent). Mouse (animal) and mouse (computer hardware) Homophony – Bat (flying mammal) and bat (sports equipment). Pen (writing instrument) and pen (small cage)

B. Meaning and Truth Compositional semantics: formulating semantic rules that build the meaning of a sentence based on the meaning of the words and how they combine. I f you know the meaning of a sentence, you can determine under what conditions it is true or false– You don’t need to know whether or not a sentence is true or false to understand it, so knowing the meaning of a sentence means knowing under what circumstances it would be true or false Most sentences are true or false depending on the situation. But some sentences are always true (tautologies, And some are always false (contradictions)

C. Meaning and language use There are two important terms that we associate with semantics : connotation and denotation Connotation refers to all the possible meanings we associate with a word beyond the dictionary definition. Denotation refers to the literal meaning of the word. For example, the word 'blue' is a color (denotation) but can also be associated with feelings of sadness (connotation).

E. Meaning and preference Preference semantics (PS) is a set of formal procedures for representing the meaning structure of natural language, with a view to embodying that structure within a system that can be said to understand, rather than within what I would call the ‘derivational paradigm’, of transformational grammar (TG) and generative semantics (GS), which seeks to determine the wellformedness , or otherwise, of sentences.
