What Our Grade 3 Class Did in Social Studies! Learning about Communities in Canada in the 1800s

Learning about the word ‘ Indigenous’ to start off our social studies unit! Check out the short video!

We read ‘The Giving Tree: A Retelling of a Traditional Métis Story’ to learn about Métis culture & their values. Virtual read-along!

We learned about the 12 Métis core values ! It’s shaped like a wheel to represent a ‘ Red River Cart’ wheel which was their primary mode of travel. Typically pulled by a cow or horse!

If you found a Giving Tree in this class, what would you hope to find? What would you leave in return? pencil /paper Sketchbook/pencil medicine/blanket and sweaters clothes/blankets food/warm fuzzy boots flowers/bread Colouring book/coloured pencils Our Classes answers!

The 12 Core Métis Values Honesty Mother Earth Patience Tolerance Respect Love Kindness Strength Sharing Balance Caring Courage We learn more in-depth about each core value to prepare us for our art project!

Honesty A Métis word was very important! Example I tell the truth even when I could get in trouble

Mother Earth The Métis people cared about nature and the environment! Example: I pick up trash when I see it on the ground

Patience It’s important to show patience even when it’s hard! Example: I wait my turn in class

Tolerance Accepting people for who they are, and treating others the way you want to be treated! Example: I listen to my classmates ideas

Respect Accepting someone for who they are, even when they are different from you or you don’t agree with them! Example: I show respect to myself by saying “I love myself”

Love Showing yourself and others you care and love them! Example: I show love by giving my friends and family hugs

Kindness Doing good deeds for others and for yourself! Example: I show kindness by telling someone they are a good friend

Strength Showing you are strong both physically and mentally! Example: I show that I’m strong by standing up to people who aren’t being kind

Sharing The Métis people shared everything with each other: stories, food, tools, knowledge! Example: I share my pencils with my classmates

Balance The Métis people learned the balance of give and take with their community! Example: I show balance by showing kindness to my friend when they show kindness to me

Caring Showing someone or something you care without expecting anything in return Example: I pick up things on the ground in my class, even though I didn’t put them there

Courage Standing up for what you know is right, even when others don’t stand with you! Example: I stand up the people who are not being kind to others

The Giving Tree Art Write your assigned value on the BLANK side of the lead “honesty” write about ONE of the values that you are assigned to on the lined side “I tell the truth even when I might get in trouble” Draw and colour your leaf on the blank side The leaves we create will go on our ‘Giving Tree’ in the class! Draw Write

Our Giving Tree! Your children worked SO hard at creating their own core value leaf & came up with excellent examples! Some even wanted to add more! We set up our Classroom Giving Tree outside of our door and made our own ‘Giving Tree’ basket in the classroom where we share pencils/paper/artwork that we created with other classmates. Check it out during parent/teacher night!
