Verghese Kurein (Founder of Amul Industry) Dr. Verghese Kurein, the real man behind the White Revolution. Verghese Kurein’s Amul experiment in Gujrat soon blossomed into the much larger Operation i.e. Operation Flood, Spread over 23 states,170 districts and 90,000 village cooperatives. It changed India from an importer to the world’s largest milk producer and exporter.

White Revolution(1970) Operation Flood was a rural development programme started by India's National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970. One of the largest of its kind, the programme objective was to create a nationwide milk grid. It resulted in making India one of the largest producers of milk and milk products, and hence is also called the White Revolution of India

Cont… The Operation Flood has been village milk producers' cooperatives, which procure milk and provide inputs and services, making modern management and technology available to members. Operation Flood's objectives included: Increase milk production ("a flood of milk") Increase in rural incomes Fair prices for consumers

Results of white Revolution Milk production in India increased from 17 million tons in 1950-51 to 84.6 million tons in 2001-02 and is expected to reach 112.5 million tons during 2010-11. White Revolutions increased the milksheds from 18 to 136; 290 urban markets expanded the outlets for milk. By the end of 1985, a self-sustaining system of 43,000 village cooperatives with 4,250,000 milk producers were covered.
