What is WHO ? WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends .
History of WHO WHO’s Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948 – a date we now celebrate every year as World Health Day.
Objectives of WHO Guidelines: To reduce the health, social and economic burden of communicable diseases To combat HIV/AIDS , malaria and tuberculosis To prevent and reduce disease, disability and premature death from chronic noncommunicable diseases , mental disorders and injuries. To reduce morbidity and mortality and improve health during key stages of lif e including pregnancy , childbirth , and adolescence improve sexual and reproductive health
To promote health and prevent or reduce risk factors for health conditions associated with use of tobacco , alcohol , drugs and other psychoactive substances and unsafe sex To improve nutrition , food safety and food security throughout the life-course and in support of public health and sustainable development To improve health services through better governance, financing, staffing and management, informed by reliable and accessible evidence and research To ensure improved access, quality and use of medical products and technologies
