INTRODUCTION WHO which stands for World Health Organization is a specialized agency of United Nations. WHO was established on 7 th April 1948. The headquarters of WHO is located in Geneva, Switzerland. WHO serves as the directing and coordinating authority for International health matters and public health. April 7 th is observed as World Health Day.

Brief history of WHO On 23 rd June 1851, International Sanitary Conferences was held by the French Government in concern with the spread of cholera, plague and yellow fever. The conference resulted in failure but established the way for WHO. After the 1 st World War, the League of Nations established the Health Organization of the League of Nations. After 2 nd World War, the United Nations Absorbed all the other Health Organizations to form WHO.

Formation of WHO

Functions of WHO Prevention and control of specific diseases. Development of comprehensive health services. Family health. Environmental health. Health statistics. Bio-medical research. Health literature and information. Co-operation with other organizations.

Governance of WHO The governance of WHO takes place through 3 components- 1. The World Health Assembly 2. The Executive Board 3. The Secretariat

The World Health Assembly The WHA currently has 194 members In addition, 7 agencies have OBSERVER STATUS, such as- - The Vatican - Palestinian Authority - Order of Malta - Int. Committee of Red Cross - Int. Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - Inter-Parliamentary Union - Taiwan, Department of Health of the Republic of China

The health assembly appoints the Director-General. The current director general of WHO is Dr. Tedros Adhanom , an Ethiopian nationalist.

Main functions of the assembly are: To determine international health policy and program. To review the work of past years. To approve the Budget. To elect member State to designate a person to serve for 3 years on executive board. Supervises the financial policies of the organization and approves the proposed program budget.

The Executive Board It is composed of 34 persons of technically qualified in the field of health. Each of them are designated by the elected Member States by the WHA. Member States are elected for three-year term.

The current Chairman of executive board is Dr. Assad Hafeez

The Secretariat The secretariat is headed by the Director-General who is the chief technical and administrative officer of the organization. There are 5 Assistant Director-Generals under the supervision of DG each of whom are responsible for the work assigned by the DG. The primary function of this sector is to provide the Member States with the technical and managerial support for their national health development programs.

Who Secretariat is composed of 14 different divisions: Epidemiological surveillance and health situation and trend assessment Communicable disease Vector biology and control Environmental health Public information and education for health Diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative technology Mental health Strengthening of health services Family health Non communicable disease Health manpower development Information system support Personal and general services Budget and finance

Brief notes on DG of WHO Name: Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Born on March 3 rd ,1965 Ethiopian politician, academic and public-health authority He served in the Government of Ethiopia as Minister of Health from 2005 to 2012 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2016 Tedros was elected as DG of WHO by WHA on 23 rd May,2017 He took office for 5-year term on 1 July 2017

Home to a quarter of the world population, WHO SEARO provides leadership on health matters, articulates evidence-based policy options, provides technical support to countries and monitors health trends. WHO SEARO Headquarters is located in New Delhi, India.

Member countries of SEARO: There are 11 countries under SEARO- Bangladesh Bhutan DPR Korea India Indonesia Maldives Myanmar Nepal Sri Lanka Thailand and Timor-Leste

Brief notes on Regional Director of SEARO Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh is the regional director of WHO South-East Asia region. Currently, she is serving her second 5-year term in office following unanimous re-election. She is an Indian national and the first woman to hold the post. Prior to her service as regional director of WHO SEARO, she was a civil servant in India.
