EARNING A LIVING Earning a living refers to the many ways through which a wage or salary may be earned.

Question? State some ways that persons earn a living (legal ways)

WAGE A wage is a payment to a worker for work done in a particular time period e.g weekly or fortnightly.

SALARY A salary is a pre-arranged amount given by an employer at regular intervals such as weekly or monthly.

EMPLOYER An employer is a person or an organisation who employs someone to do a particular job.

EMPLOYEE Employees are people who work for a company.

EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY Employers have a responsibility to workers, such as ensuring safe working conditions and a responsibility to the government to operate lawfully.

WORK ETHICS Work ethics refer to rules and standards of conduct that are acceptable in the workplace. Ethical conduct are the moral principles that people live by e.g It is unacceptable to steal from someone.

Acceptable standards of conduct in the workplace Honesty and Integrity- Workers are required to be truthful and not falsify information. Respect- Workers are expected to refrain from abuse of company vehicles, telephones, copier, fax machines and company materials. Team Work and Co-operation Properly Attired Reliable

CASE STUDY At the Top Pop soft drink factory, workers were reported by supervisors for playing internet games during working hours, and using the company phone for their personal use. Four company workers were seen a at a beach with the company vehicle, playing music loudly and making a nuisance of themselves. The workers were summoned to see their managers, where they admitted not acting correctly. They were all demoted for breaking company rules and also made to work extra hours.

Questions What examples of work ethics have been broken in the case study? Why do you think it is important to observe proper work ethics while at work? Suggest three (3) ways a company can encourage workers to conduct themselves ethically. What do you think is the meaning of the word integrity? Explain how a worker can demonstrate reliability.
