General Network & Computer T roubleshooting S kills Computers and Networks
How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection problems in computers Wi-Fi issues are some of the most frustrating you can encounter. Given so much of modern computing relies on a web connection, being cut off from the internet can bring your productivity to a screeching halt. Trying the steps below can help you fix or narrow down the connection problem.
1- Make sure Wi‑Fi is on: Select the Start button or windows button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi to check. Next, select Show available networks, and if a network you expect to see appears in the list, select it, and then select Connect . 2 - Make sure the physical Wi‑Fi switch on your laptop is turned on. (An indicator light usually shows when it is on.) 3 - Make sure airplane mode is turned off: Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Airplane mode and turn off airplane mode if it is on. 4 – Make sure that the wireless router or Access Point is on. This helps create a new connection to your Internet service provider (ISP). Below are some of the problems encountered when using a wireless network and how to overcome them
1. Wi-Fi Is Connected but You Don’t Have Internet Sometimes, Windows will claim you are connected to the internet and that the connection is secure, but you will not be able to access the web. Normally, the issue is caused by either a faulty TCP/IP stack, IP address, or DNS client resolver cache. Firstly, try running Windows’s native Network Troubleshooting tool. You will find it in Settings > Update and security > Troubleshoot > Internet connections .
If that does not work, open Command Prompt and type the following commands. Press Enter after each command: netsh winsock reset ipconfig /release netsh int ip reset ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns
2. Windows 10 Will not Connect to Wi-Fi If you see a message that reads Windows 10 cannot connect to this network while attempting to establish a network connection, your network adapter is probably to blame. The best solution is to uninstall the network adapter’s driver and allow Windows to reinstall it automatically.
Follow the steps below to complete the process: Press Windows key + X and click on Device Manager . Right-click on the network adapter and choose Uninstall . If prompted, click on Delete the driver software for this device . Restart your machine and Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
3 . Windows 10 Wi-Fi Driver Issues We have already explained how to delete and reinstall your Wi-Fi driver earlier in the article, but there are a couple of other steps you can also try if you are having Wi-Fi driver issues on Windows 10. Namely, you can try to either update the driver or roll it back to a previous version.
To update your Wi-Fi driver, follow the steps below: Right-click on the Start Menu . Click on Device Manager . Expand the drop-down menu below Network Adapters by clicking on the arrow. Right-click on your adapter and select Properties . Click on the Driver tab. Choose either Update Driver or Roll Back Driver .
4 . No Wi-Fi Networks Found If your Windows machine cannot find your Wi-Fi network, make some basic troubleshooting checks before moving on. Is the router turned on? Are you within range of the network? If the answer to both those questions is yes, the next step is to try updating and/or reinstalling the network adapter’s driver. We have already shown you how to do it.
Lastly, you can try changing the region of your Wi-Fi adapter. It’s easy to do, just use the guide below: Press Windows key + R . Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter . Expand the Network Adapters section by clicking on the arrow. Right-click on the name of your network adapter.
Continued; Choose Properties . Click on the Advanced tab . Highlight Country and Region . Choose the entry according to your location. Note: Not all network adapters have access to the Country and Region property.
5 . Forget Wi-Fi Network on Windows 10 Sometimes, you need your machine to forget a Wi-Fi network. Perhaps you have a new router, or you are just having a clear out of old networks that you once connected to but no longer use.
Forgetting a Wi-Fi network on Windows 10 is easy: Open the Start Menu and click on Settings . Click on Network and Internet . Choose Wi-Fi from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Click on Manage known networks . Highlight the name of the network you want to forget. Click on Forget .
6 . Windows 10 Keeps Dropping the Wi-Fi Connection If you find Windows 10 repeatedly drops the Wi-Fi connection without warning (and you are sure there are no issues with the router), the problem could be caused by your network adapter’s power management settings. You need to revoke the permission, which allows Windows to turn off the adapter to save power. To do so, you will once again need to return to the Device Manager:
Below are the steps to follow Right-click on the Start Menu and choose Device Manager . Expand the list below Network Adapters . Right-click on your network adapter. Select Properties . Click on the Power Management tab. Unmark the checkbox next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power .
7. Verify network connection with Ping Once your wireless client has a valid IP address, use ping to verify network connectivity. Run a Command Prompt window from the wireless client's Start menu and use it to ping your AP or router's IP address with the Internet Control Message Protocol as shown in Figure 5. If pinging your AP or router repeatedly fails, skip to step 6 .
If pinging your AP or router is successful, then ping any other wired or wireless LAN client that you wish to share files or printers with. If that ping fails, then the destination may be using a firewall to block incoming messages. After disabling the destination's Windows firewall, ping again. If ping is now successful, then the firewall you disabled may also be blocking Windows network protocols. Reconfigure the firewall to permit the traffic you want to exchange between LAN clients. For example, re-enable the firewall and permit inbound file and printer sharing.
Ping test in Windows 10 Click the Search icon (magnifying glass) in the bottom left-hand corner and type " cmd " into the search bar. 2. Select the Command Prompt app - it will be at the top of the list of search results as the best match.
A black box with a flashing cursor will open; this is the Command Prompt. Type “ping” and then hit the Space bar on your keyboard. Type in the address you’d like to ping and then hit the Enter key on your keyboard. Wait for the ping results.
8. Ping : Transmit failed. General Failure message We can resolve it by following the steps provided below . Power Cycle the entire network : Command Prompt troubleshooting :
Use the following command prompt commands to solve the issue. i pconfig /release i pconfig /renew ipconfig / flushdns netsh int ip reset c:\ tcp.txt netsh winsock reset Type each commands on command prompt and press enter. After completing all commands, reboot your computer.
Troubleshooting Common Computer Problems Troubleshooting is the process of figuring out how to solve a computer problem. Even with the most updated software and hardware, occasionally computers can malfunction . In order to solve a problem, you must figure out which part of the system is malfunctioning. You will need to check each component of the computer, unless it is obvious where the problem is coming from. Isolating the problem will help you solve the problem quickly.
Continued; Knowing how to solve these problems with a shortcut perhaps using only a few keys on the keyboard can save time and effort. Backing up your important computer files to another source will ensure that if your problem cannot be corrected, you will still have a safe copy of your information
Basic Troubleshooting Steps Close open programs and windows you are not currently using. Make sure all of your cords are connected properly. Try to repeat the sequence of commands you performed before the problem occurred. See if this causes the same response by your computer. Press the F1 key to access the Help window. You can search for a solution to your problem once the Help
window appears. If there is an error message, record the full message for future reference. Restart your computer to see if it clears the problem. To restart your computer, open the start window and select the Restart button instead of the Log Off button. If restarting the computer does not clear the problem, shut down the computer and then start it back up again. If the issue is still not resolved, check the common technology issues below or call your system administrator.
1. Problem : Power button will not start computer Solution 1 : If your computer does not start , begin by checking the power cord to confirm that it is plugged securely into the back of the computer case and the power outlet. Solution 2 : If it is plugged into an outlet, make sure it is a working outlet . To check your outlet, you can plug in another electrical device , such as a lamp .
Solution 3 : If the computer is plugged in to a surge protector , verify that it is turned on. You may have to reset the surge protector by turning it off and then back on. You can also plug a lamp or other device into the surge protector to verify that it's working correctly . Solution 4 : If you are using a laptop , the battery may not be charged. Plug the AC adapter into the wall, then try to turn on the laptop. If it still doesn't start up, you may need to wait a few minutes and try again.
2. Problem : An application is running slowly Solution 1 : Close and reopen the application. Solution 2 : Update the application. To do this, click the Help menu and look for an option to check for Updates . If you don't find this option, another idea is to run an online search for application updates.
