Causal organism : Phytoplasm
Classification Phylum: Tenericutes
Class: Mollicutes
Order: Acholeplasmatales
Family: Acholeplasmataceae Genus : Candidatus Species : phytoplasma
Symptoms Predominant symptoms of the disease are flaccidity, abnormal bending of the leaflets or ribbing of leaflets. Foliar Yellowing and marginal necrosis are other symptoms associated with this disease. main roots and rootlets start drying from tip in bearing palms. DIseased palms show extensive rotting of roots. Flowering is delayed and also yield is considerably reduced.
Etiology Phytoplasma are the cell wall-less prokaryotes that are pleomorphic with Diameter Less than 1micro Meter. they appear as a complex filamentous or spheroidal pleomorphic bodies. Obligate parasite of plant phloem tissue. Phytoplasmas cannot be cultured in vitro, and hence it is very difficult to identify them.
Life Cycle
Host of range Coconut Sugarcane Sandalwood
Damage infliction It causes upto 35% of yield loss That may extend to 80 % in Kerala and boundaries of Tamil Nadu.
Management Cut and remove disease advanced, uneconomical palms yielding less than 10 nuts per palm per year Inter cropping can be done to avoid this disease. Apply fertilizers at the rate of 1.3 kg urea, 2.00 kg super phosphate and 3.5 kg potash (MOP) / palm / year in the form of urea, rock phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Apply 50 kg FYM or green manure and 5 kg of neem cake / palm / year. Use resistant variety : Chowghat Green Dwarf (CGD) Use insecticides Acephate, imidacloprid or disulfoton @ 3 tablespoons in 1 Gallon of water Use endosulfan, malathion 10% EC For control of vector.
