HOLIDAYS
The Romanian winter holidays take place between the 6-th of
December and the 7-th ofJanuary – They are the Christian and secular
holidays:
- December 6 - St. Nicholas
- December 20 - St. Ignatius, pigs slaughter
- December 24 - Christmas Eve
- December 25 - Christmas
- December 27 - St. Stephen

SFÂNTUL NICOLAE
•5 to 6 December St. Nicholas
•On the evening of December the 5-th
children prepare their boots for Santa Claus
(Saint Nicholas) to bring them gifts.
•It is said that the saint travels with a donkey
loaded with two baskets: one filled with
candy and toys for good children and
another with rod for children who have not
been good.
•He comes down the chimney and gives
children sweets or rod.
•The next morning the children find the gifts
left by Santa Claus in their boots.
SFÂNTUL IGNAT
December the 20-th St. Ignatius:
On this day, Romanians slaughter
the pigs.
After scorching, cleaning and
cuting the pig, the family celebrates
the ‘pomana porcului’ a small feast
in which all those who took part in
cutting the pig enjoy the cooked
pork.
Romanians prepare various
dishes from pork such as:
liverwurst, sausages, bacon, jelly.

With 40 days before Christmas
The Advent begins during which the
related people do not eat meat or
dairy products.
Also during this period Romanian
women are cleaning the house and
the yard to properly welcome the
great celebration.
On the morning of December
the 24-th and up to noon,
groups of children between 5
and 14 years old go to
"Christmas Eve", a short
carol delivered to every house
which is the opening of a
series of carols.
In the evening, after leaving
the church (at 18), groups of
children go with the "Star", a
religious carol. The children
bear a star, lit from behind
with a candle and which has
at its center a reproduction of
Nativity.
The Carols are ritual texts sung for
Christmas and New Year.
There are secular and Christian carols.
On Christmas Eve the family decorates the
tree and receives the carolers.
The carolers receive from the host coils,
fruit (apples and walnuts), candy or money.
CRĂCIUNUL
•It's the birthday of Jesus Christ.
•In Romania Christmas is the name of the pastor in whose
manger Jesus was born.
•Everywhere the magic word revives hopes, brings joy and
light in homes.
•Christmas celebration lasts for three days.
•On the first day of Christmas you give gifts to your loved
ones and the family meet at the Christmas dinner serving
traditional dishes (stuffed cabbage, sausage, jelly,
pudding, liverwurst, cake).
SFÂNTUL ŞTEFAN
After the Christmas other holidays and
customs arrive that bring pleasure and
joy in every heart and in every house:
Capra, Sorcova, Pluguşorul.
On December the 27-th St. Stephen's
religious celebration takes place.
Those who bear the name Stephen or
Stephanie celebrate their birthday.
PLUGUL ŞI PLUGUŞORUL
•New Year's Eve (31 December) groups of lads and
recently married men go to ‘PLOW’
•Plow – an old agricultural habit that has become a
common greeting for rich crops in the new year
tha has just begun. This practice illustrates one of
the main occupations of the Romanian people -
agriculture.
•Pluguşorul on the New Year's Eve is done by
groups of children that go from house to house to
wish good fortune and health.
SORCOVA
It is usually dedicated to the New Year.
The mark consists in a ritual stick or a green
branch which is adorned.
The custom is practiced by children
and hosts are addressed wishes
health, wealth and prosperity.
CAPRA
•‘Capra’ was considered by
Romanians the animal that shows
signs that the weather will be good
or bad.
•The game "goat" became a ritual
meant to bring a fruitful year, flocks
of animals and a successful
harvest. Nowadays, the game
remained an opportunity to show
off some beautiful ornaments, rugs,
towels, etc..
REVELIONUL
On the night of December the
31-st Romanians celebrate
the coming of a new year.
They throw parties and
dinners.
On January the 1-st it occurs
the religious feast of St. Basil.
Those who are called Basil or
Vasilena, Vasilica celebrate
their birthday.
BOBOTEAZA
•January the 5-th - Eve of Epiphany
(The Baptism of Christ)
•Priests go from house to house and sprinkle
holy water on the house and in the house.
•January the 6-th – in the Orthodox calendar:
The Baptism of the Lord, when Priests
bless the water (the holy water), and with it
are sanctified all the waters of the earth.
With this water the cattle are sprinkled, the
sick, the houses and the new born to bring
health and good fortune
SFÂNTUL ION
On January the 7-th
Romanians celebrate the
Orthodox religious feast of St.
John.
It was he who baptized people
in ancient Galilee,
announcing the coming of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
Those who bear the name of
John and Joan celebrate their
birthday on this day.
•One of the most important events housed by the city
Sighet is: “The Winter Traditions Festival- MARMATIA "
•It takes place every year on December the 27-th.
•This festival is done continuously for 42 years, first
edition took place in 1968.

The Feast Dragobete is
considered the Romanian
equivalent of Valentine's Day
