About This Presentation

These slides explain about Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN).

WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network)

Personal Area Network A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for data transmission among devices such as computers, telephones and personal digital assistants. PANs can be used for communication among the personal devices themselves, or for connecting to a higher level network and the Internet. Two types of PAN Wired PAN Wireless PAN

Wired PAN connection The data cable is used for Wired PAN. This is also a Personal Area Network because that connection is for the users personal use. PAN is used for personal use only . Example: Data transferring between mobile and PC through a data cable connection.

Wireless Personal Area Network A wireless personal area network (WPAN) is a personal area network A wireless personal area network (WPAN) is a personal, short distance area wireless network for interconnecting devices centered around an individual person's workspace. WPANs  address wireless networking and mobile computing devices such as PCs, PDAs, peripherals, cell phones and consumer electronics . Wireless PAN is based on the standard IEEE 802.15 .

IEEE 802 wireless network technology options

Wireless pan A wireless personal area network (WPAN) is carried over wireless network technologies such as : IrDA (Infrared Data Association) Wireless USB Bluetooth ZigBee UWB (Ultra Wide Band)

Types of wpan Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) are an emerging technology for future short-range indoor and outdoor multimedia and data centric applications. Two types of WPANs have been standardized by the IEEE 802.15 working group; namely: High data Rate WPANs ( HR-WPANs) Low data Rate WPANs (LR-WPANs )

Wireless technology Various types of wireless networks and technologies allow devices to speak (send data) to each other and to the web (TCP/IP Networks) without cables. There are a number of different wireless technologies out there that can be implemented in hardware products for the Internet of Things (IOT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) communication. For example, a laptop can be connected to the Internet wirelessly by creating a Bluetooth WPAN with a cell phone. The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Internet connectivity of the cell phone can be shared with the laptop, and all data packets to and from the laptop are sent over the Bluetooth-powered WPAN.

Features of wireless pan A WPAN could serve to interconnect all the ordinary computing and communicating devices that many people have on their desk or carry with them today. It could serve a more specialized purpose such as allowing the military team members to communicate during an operation . A key concept in WPAN technology is known as "plugging in". In the ideal scenario, when any two WPAN-equipped devices come into close proximity (within several meters of each other) or within a few kilometers of a central server, they can communicate.

Features of wireless pan Important feature is the ability of each device to lock out other devices selectively, preventing needless interference or unauthorized access to information.

Difficulties Short range Expensive Low data rate than wired PAN
