O. HENRY
initial name John Sidney Porter
Greensboro, North Carolina, United States,
September 11, 1862
Author of short stories from the United
States whose stories praised the prosaic,
notably the lives of common people in New
York City.
His stories usually ended unexpectedly, a
strategy that came to be identified with
him and cost him respect once it had lost
favour.
To demonstrate the impact of chance on
character, he employed dark or sarcastic
humour.
AMERICAN AUTHOR

40-year-old single baker owner Martha Meacham runs her own
company. A man with a German accent often buys two stale loaves
of bread from the store. She finds him attractive and deduces from
the paint stains on his fingers that he must be an artist. She
displays an artwork she owns in the bakery one day with the
intention of proving her theory.
Sure enough, the man notices the painting when he returns the
following time to buy his stale bread. After discussing it with her, he
then critiques the viewpoint. After understanding she was correct to
believe he was an artist seeking assistance for his pursuits, Martha
begins to think about getting married to him.

SUMMARY

She sees the man getting thinner and weaker, and she assumes
he must be straining to support himself through his artistic
activities. She secretly opened the two new loaves and smuggled
copious amounts of butter into both of them to make the man
obese one day while he was distracted by a fire engine going by
outside.
She imagines the man's reaction when he opens the bread and
learns of her generosity. A little while later, however, the
bakery's entrance opens, and the artist enters with a young man
who is smoking a pipe in hand. Before storming off, the artist
yells at her, calling her a "meddlesome [i.e., meddling] old cat," a
"Tausendonfer" (German for "millipede," i.e., a pest), and more.

Main Characters
Mr Blumberger
&
Miss Martha

Character sketch of Mr. Blumberger
Architectural draughtsman Mr.
Blumberger is. For the new city hall,
he is now creating a fresh plan.
He shows signs of being sober because
he treats the woman at the bakery
business with such kindness,
gentleness, and respect.
Mr. Blumberger is portrayed as a
broken man who is very basic.

Character sketch of Miss Martha
A small bakery is run by Miss Martha. She is single,
middle-aged, and looking for love.
Miss Martha, who was forty years old, had two false
teeth, a credit balance of $2,000, and a good heart.
When he consistently attends the workplace two or
three times each week, Miss Martha begins to think
about a man with a German accent as a possibility.
Miss Martha begins to consider getting married to him
so she may support him in his artistic endeavours.
Miss Martha was a genuine pleasure to be around and
made an effort to help. She used the image to further
her theory because she was a very inquisitive person.

Analysis of the Story
The story revolves around a noble gesture that goes awry
and, in the process, ends with what the female protagonist
thought was a promising courtship, but instead had a
tenebrous effect on herself. This friction was, of course,
created involuntarily because of Miss Martha's obfuscated
view on the male protagonist's work.
