Understanding Components of Communication

Understanding Components of Communication In order to understand the components of communication, it is pertinent to define Communication. Communication is a process of exchanging information, ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions through Verbal, Non Verbal Communication. The Verbal and Non Verbal Communication includes, speech, writing, body language and behavior.

Components of Communication The Components of Communication are as following: Context Sender/Encoder Message Medium Receiver/Decoder Feedback

1. Context Context Communication do not commence until unless there is no context. Context is the circumstances surrounding a message, in other words it is the situation by which the sender feels/compels to send a message. The easiest way to find out the context of a message is to ask yourself why you are communicating ? what is the purpose of communication when you are doing with someone. For example you are book seller, a university advertises a tender regarding books for their library. You will obviously write a formal proposal to the university. The circumstances which lead you to write a proposal is the context of your communication with university. Let us consider another example, Imagine your are hungry, you pick up a phone and dial pizza hut and order a pizza. you are establishing communication with Pizza hut for a reason that you are hungry. The context of communication with Pizza hut via Phone is your hunger.

Sender/Encoder Sender/Encoder Sender is the person, a machine or anything who/which transmit or send message. The sender can also be encoder, which means to put a message into coded form. During World War II, countries would encode messages so that if they were intercepted, their enemies could not understand them. There are various reasons why information might need to be written in code: spies and secret agents need to encode message so that only people who know the code can decipher their meanings.

Message Message A message is a body which holds information, idea, thought, emotions, signal, sign, expression. It is conveyed from sender to receiver. Generally message is transmitted/sent orally or in written, a message can also be sent via a look or a gesture. In today’s world , people tend to use email, cell phones to send a message. But in olden days, pre-internet people would send messages via post. In business or in official procedure, the messages are delivered in formal communication for example letters, memos, minutes, report , email etc , while in normal routine, chit chat, friendly talk, write casual letter to friend and so on takes place. The difference in between the said two types of communication is style, in business we follow formal, fixed style while in normal routine it is upto us which style we like to follow.

Medium Medium The word medium is derived from latin adjective Medius which means middle. In communication via medium the messages travels from sender to receiver. For example when we talk face to face with each other, the air is the medium, in which our message travels from sender to receiver. It is because our vocal box beats air and the receiver’s ears has some fluid which is sensitive to the beats of air, receives the transmitted message. Likewise if we write a letter we use paper as a medium because it is the paper which takes the message to the receiver. In cell phone the electromagnetic waves transmits our messages.

Receiver/decoder Receiver/decoder A receiver is a person, machine or anything that receives the message. If the message is in coded form, a person or machine which decodes message is the decoder. Generally decoders are machines or spies, secret agents.

Feedback Feedback The Feedback is the response/reaction of receiver to the message delivered. It is a nother words answer, reply or reaction to the message delivered. The Feedback follow the same cycle of components of communication, in similar fashion senders sends message but receiver becomes sender while sender becomes receiver thus establishing two way communication.
