Stress Speakers must stress certain syllables in the words otherwise they will be misunderstood . Stress is the emphasis that we give to a syllable or a sentence .

Stress Many languages have specific rules for stressing words , but in English there are NO consistent rules for stressing . Consequently you may have difficulty when stressing words . You must pay attention to native pronunciation .

Words generally unstreessed within the sentence FUNCTION WORDS: Function words are the unimportant words in a sentence . They don’t carry as much meaning as content words . We normally DO NOT stress function words . It includes the following parts of speech : Articles Prepositions Conjunctions Pronouns Helping verbs

Stressing words to clarify or change meaning Sometimes a speaker wants his / her sentence to convey a special meaning that it wouldn’t have in the written form . This can be done by stressing a specific word in order to call attention to it . The word that receives the stress depends on the personal motive of the speaker. I bought ten ties . (I wasn’t given the ties ; I bought them ) I bought ten ties . (I didn’t buy shirts ; I bought ties )

Stress in adjective / noun combinations When you speak , it’s important to use words that describe what you are talking about . Words that describe nouns ( people , places, or things ) are called adjectives . When you use adjective / noun combination , the noun normally receives greater stress.
