Pneumonia is preventable and treatable, yet remains the leading cause of infectious death in children under 5 worldwide. © 2012 Pinky Patel, Courtesy of Photoshare November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Pneumonia is the #1 infectious killer of children under age 5 globally, killing an estimated 879,000 children in 2016. That’s more than 2,400 young lives per day. © 2009 Arie Basuki , Courtesy of Photoshare UNICEF. (2016). Estimates of child cause of death, acute respiratory infection. Data as of June 2018. Today, we celebrate our 10 th World Pneumonia Day. This year, pneumonia will claim the lives of over half a million fewer children than it did each year when we first recognized World Pneumonia Day. November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

People of any age, in any country, are at risk of contracting pneumonia, but the vast majority of all childhood deaths from pneumonia occur in poor countries. © 2016 Riccardo Gangale / VectorWorks , Courtesy of Photoshare November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

In the last three decades, millions of children’s lives have been saved thanks to access to vaccines, antibiotics, and oxygen. Each day, 1,000 fewer children died from pneumonia in 2016 than they did in 2009. © 2009 Center for Communication Programs, Courtesy of Photoshare November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Investing in pneumonia interventions can directly help us achieve multiple SDGs: SDG 3 – Good health and well-being, SDG 1 – No poverty, and SDG 10 – No inequalities. © 2014 C. Hanna-Truscott/Midwives for Haiti, Courtesy of Photoshare November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Girls in South Asia are 43% more likely to die from pneumonia than are boys. #StopPneumonia November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

For children who acquire pneumonia in developing countries, 70% of deaths could be prevented with appropriate antibiotic treatment that costs $0.40 for a course of treatment. November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Life-saving pneumonia vaccination and treatments exist; however, inequitable distribution keeps some groups disproportionately vulnerable. We must invest in interventions that prioritize the at-risk and underserved populations. November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Pneumococcal and Hib vaccines can prevent nearly a million deaths that would occur in the poorest 40% of the low- and middle- income country population. © 2006 Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs, Courtesy of Photoshare November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org

Researchers found that in low- and middle-income countries, administering the Hib and pneumococcal vaccines can prevent over 1.25 million cases of poverty over 15 years. Chang AY et.a.al 2018 Health Affairs November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org © Afshan Najafi

Globally, more than 50% of pneumonia deaths among children under 5 are linked to household air pollution. WHO. (2016). Household air pollution and health. Insufficient breastfeeding can leave children undernourished and at an increased risk of pneumonia. Breastfeeding can prevent about one third of all respiratory infections and over half of all hospitalizations from respiratory infections. WHO/UNICEF. (2013). Only with equitable access to comprehensive pneumonia prevention will we be able to end preventable child deaths. Learn more in our 2018 Pneumonia and Diarrhea Progress Report , found at: www.jhsph.edu /ivac/ November 12 www.StopPneumonia.org
