Carrying Capacity: YES!!! Narrow Street Heavy traffic Almost all energy is imported, including gasoline, natural gas and most electricity.Macao's economy is extremely dependent on mainland China。 Top 10 most densely populated countries in the world Macao is No.1 ! Very small space for living Many years no any improvement lots of old buildings Apart from land reclamation from the sea, there is no any new land available for development to improve residents' living conditions.
Drivers of Change Macao is the only region around China that is connected to China by land and where legal gambling can be conducted. The gambling-related tourism industry has brought huge number of tourist, and attracting a large number of foreign workers to work and settle in Macao. Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy in mainland China in 1979, ordinary Chinese have been allowed to travel, work and even settle in Macao. Between 1980 and 2000, the income level and living standards in mainland China were much lower than those in Macau. This huge difference triggered a huge wave of immigration from mainland China to Macau. So since 1980, Macao's population has begun a period of continuous growth. In 1999, the Macao Special Administrative Region was established and the Chinese government took back its jurisdiction over Macao. A large number of Chinese people who had close ties with the Chinese government and state-owned enterprises went to Macao to set up offices. Many of the permanent personnel brought their families to settle down. Although Macao's population growth rate had begun to decline slightly before that, starting in 2000, Macao's population entered a period of rapid growth again.
Environmental Impact More and more tall buildings, fewer and fewer trees. In order to build more bigger and luxurious hotel, casinos and roads connecting them, more and more green spaces and woods are being encroached upon. Fresh air became less and less. The tourism industry with gambling as the core attraction makes the noise pollution and light pollution of the whole city at night become an important part of the city's characteristics. Well sleep became more and more difficult. The high density of local residents and a large number of tourists coming and going all year round make it impossible for Macao to deal with the daily household, commercial and industrial waste independently.. The bad smell became easier and easier to smell.
Population Policy Macao must implement a very strict population policy to a void continued population growth. Narrow area: Including the additional land reclaimed from the sea in recent years, Macao's total land area is only 33.3 square kilometers until 2023 . Today, its population is approaching 700,000 , and population density ranking FIRST in the world. Lack of resources: There are no local energy and minerals. Revenue from coal and forest resources: 0% of GDP (2018 est.). All industrial raw materials such as gasoline, natural gas, coal, and steel are imported. There is no agriculture and food is completely dependent on imports. Single industrial structure: Tourism and service industries surrounding the gaming industry are the pillars of the current economy of Macao. There is a lack of high-tech industries that can generate high value-added and manufacturing industries that can absorb a large number of low-end labor forces. Public infrastructure is scarce and antiquated: Housing, transportation, health care, education, energy, etc., are in great need of improvement. Controlling the growth of the local population and especially the influx of immigrants is what the Macao government must adhere to for a long time.
