Introduction

Mode of transmission D eep bite or scratch by an infected animal. Dogs are the main host & transmitter of rabies in India. Bats are the source of most human rabies deaths in America , Canada, Australia & Europe. Human deaths following exposure to foxes, jackals and other wild carnivore host species are very rare.

Transmission can also occur when infectious material ( saliva) comes into contact with human mucosa or fresh skin wounds. Human-to-human transmission by bite is theoretically possible but has never been confirmed. Rarely, rabies may be contracted by inhalation of virus containing aerosol or via transplantation of an infected organ. Ingestion of raw meat from animals infected with rabies is not a source of human infection. Mode of transmission…………Con.

Symptoms of rabies Rabies progresses in  five distinct stages:- I ncubation Period Prodrome stage A cute neurologic period C oma & D eath Incubation Period: Incubation is the time before symptoms appear. It usually lasts for  2- 3 months   & varies from 1 week- 1 year, depending on where the virus entered the body & the number of viral particles involved. C loser the bite is to the brain, sooner the effects are likely to appear.

Prodromal stage: During prodromal stage, early, flu-like symptoms occur, Fever  of 100.4°F (38°C) or above Headache Anxiety F eeling generally unwell Sore throat and a cough N ausea and vomiting D iscomfort at the site of the bite Symptoms of rabies……….Con

Acute neurologic period - During this stage, neurologic symptoms develop:- C onfusion and aggression, P artial paralysis I nvoluntary muscle twitching, R igid neck muscles, C onvulsions H yperventilation and difficulty breathing, H ypersalivation F rothing at the mouth, F ear of water Hallucinations ,  nightmares and  insomnia, Fear of light Toward the end of this phase, breathing becomes rapid & inconsistent. Patient passes on the stage of coma & finally die. To-date, on record only 03 people, who have been stricken with rabies & have survived. Symptoms of rabies……….Con

Laboratory Diagnosis Rabies can be confirmed in patients early in the illness by antigen detectio n using immunofluorescence of skin biopsy & by virus isolation from saliva & other secretions.
