LAYERS OF
TECTONIC
PLATES
Presented by: Row 5

PLATE TECTONICS
The theory of plate
tectonics revolutionized
the earth sciences by
explaining how the
movement of geologic
plates causes mountain
building, volcanoes, and
earthquakes.
Plate tectonics is a scientific
theory that explains how major
landforms are created as a result
of Earth’s subterranean
movements. The theory, which
solidified in the 1960s,
transformed the earth sciences
by explaining many phenomena,
including mountain building events.

THE EARTH IS MADE UP 3 LAYERS:
Outer core
Mantle
Crust
Inner core

The CRUST
This is where we live!
Continental crust
Oceanic
crust
Continental crust
thick(10-70 km)
Dense (sinks under
continental crust)
buoyant (less dense than
oceanic crust)
mostly old
Oceanic crust
The outermost layer of Earth's
lithosphere that is found under the
oceans and formed at spreading
centers on oceanic ridges, which
occur at divergent plate boundaries

MANTLE
The interior of the Earth is mostly made up
of the MANTLE
The MANTLE seperates the Crust and Core
Roughly 2,900 km deep
mantle exerts both the mechanical and
thermal forces that drive plate tectonics
and plays a significant role in the formation
of the crust
Lower mantle
Called ASTHENOSPHERE
weaker and smaller
Mantle

The upper mantle of Earth is a
very thick layer of rock inside
the planet, which begins just
beneath the crust and ends at
the top of the lower mantle at
670 km.
UPPER MANTLE
Upper
mantle
Lower
mantle

Part of the upper mantle located
bellow the crust
asthenosphere, zone of Earth's
mantle lying beneath the lithosphere
and believed to be much hotter and
more fluid than the lithosphere. The
asthenosphere extends from about
100 km (60 miles) to about 700 km
(450 miles) below Earth's surface.
ASTHENOSPHERE

LITHOSPHERE
The lithosphere is the
outermost layer of the Earth
It is made up of the crust and
upper mantle
It "floats" on top of the
asthenosphere
It is divided into continental
and oceanic lithosphere.It is
made up of the cooled rocks
and minerals on Earth.

Outer Core
The third layer of the Earth
It is the only liquid layer, and is mainly
made up of the metals iron and nickel,
as well as small amounts of other
substances.
The outer core is responsible for Earth's
magnetic field.
INNER CORE
The inner core is believed to be
composed of an iron–nickel alloy with
some other elements.
The temperature at the inner core's
surface is estimated to be
approximately 5,700 K (5,430 °C; 9,800
°F), which is about the temperature at
the surface of the Sun.
