English Literature Paper 2 Section C Unseen poetry:  Students will answer one question on one unseen poem and one question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem. LI – To evaluate and answer a GCSE exam question based on the unseen poem using PETAL . P, E and L T (Zoom) and A 24 marks @12 marks for each AO, recommend to spend 30 minutes on Q.1

Questions to ask in Unseen Poetry   What are the main ideas of the poem?   What is the tone of the poem? (mood)   How does the poet feel?   How does the poet make you (the reader) feel?   What words and phrases from the poem are relevant to the question ?  Do they include any language or structural devices? Form and structure, Meaning, Images, Language, Effect on the reader LI – To evaluate and answer a GCSE exam question based on the unseen poem using PETAL .

The key words are the focus of the question: the specific themes or ideas the examiners want you to focus on For the above question, the key words of the question are  “ideas about living a happy and contented life”  This is the theme the examiners want you to explore in your essay Do not be tempted to write a question on any other theme: this will affect your overall mark badly, as you won’t be directly answering the question! In the example above, the theme is  living a happy and contented life,  so make sure you plan and write an essay about this 3.   Read and analyse the unseen poem You should  only now  start reading and analysing the printed poem Your reading and analysis will now be focused on the terms of the question, and the theme you have identified ( living a happy and contented life ) This will change the way you approach the given poem, and make your reading more efficient 4. Consider your given poem in terms of this key idea or theme Use your definition of the key terms of the question to frame your thinking about the given poem Where do we see examples of  living a happy and contented life  in the given poem? Who is presented as  living a happy and contented life ?  How is  living a happy and contented life  presented by the poet? What is the poet’s overarching message about  living a happy and contented life ? LI – To evaluate and answer a GCSE exam question based on the unseen poem using PETAL .

Your plan should include all aspects of your response, covering all of the assessment objectives, but mainly focusing on AO1: Your overall argument, or  thesis  (AO1) Your  topic sentences  for all your paragraphs (AO1) The quotations you will be using and analysing from the given poem (AO1) A sense of why the poet has made the choices they have (AO2) Therefore, a plan may look like the following: Topic sentence Evidence from unseen poem Macrae explores ideas about being contented within your own self through her use of metaphor “while inside his heart was fat with sun” Macrae uses a first name, almost as an afterthought, which brings a sense of familiarity to the reader “Harry didn’t care for things” Macrae ends the poem with one word which helps to reinforce what she perceives as the true value of life “diamonds”

Model PETAL paragraph The poet suggests that living in contentment as a powerful feeling that can overcome life's obstacles. Harry had undergone great hardship and suffering. However, due to the power of happiness and contentment, his past blemishes and flaws are irrelevant as he is able to overcome them. For example, the metaphor "his heart was fat with sun" connotes light that he is content and fundamentally happy to his core. This would suggest that happiness has the power to dispel any hurdles and challenges. The poet presents happiness as auspicious and conducive to good things. For instance, Harry clears a "thin silver path" . The adjective "silver" implies something shiny and precious that suggests hope and a bright future. "Silver" is a valuable element and possible reference to money, indicating that Harry's contented lifestyle has brought him metaphorical wealth. This positive imagery contrasts with the "Black Mountain" which could figuratively represent life's struggles. In addition, the word "path" implies ease and direction, suggesting that life is easy and carefree when one is happy, as opposed to an arduous hike. This allows the read to think that things are set out ahead of him and all he needs to do is "clear" a "path" that will lead him to further happiness.  Point  Evidence   Technique (ZOOM)   Analysis  Link LI – To evaluate and answer a GCSE exam question based on the unseen poem using PETAL .

Model PETAL paragraph (contd.) The structure of the poem shows that the poet has used simple free verse . The irregular line length signifies the unpredictable nature of his existence and further emphasizes how he is free from the strict codes and structures of what one thinks are the important indicators of happiness in one's life. Moreover, the use of enjambment in the lines "his friends' tears fell like a thousand diamonds" suggest the uncontrolled deep mourning of Harry's passing . Despite having not much wealth, Harry was treasured by his friends due to him being a good person and also highlights how Harry "didn't care for things that other people prize" as leading a happy and contented life.   LI – To evaluate and answer a GCSE exam question based on the unseen poem using PETAL . Point  Evidence   Technique (ZOOM)   Analysis  Link

Plenary Which line(s) in the poem 'The Richest Poor Man in the Valley" encapsulates the theme of "being contented in life brings happiness" in the poem best? Do you agree that being contented in life brings happiness? If not, explain why not in about thirty words in your exercise book.
