Introduction Yusuf Meherally Center (YMC) was founded in the memory of Shri Yusuf Meherally , founder of National Militia and Bombay Youth League, who had played a leading role in peasant’s organization and trade unions. The organization had been inaugurated by Dr. Zakir Hussain, Vice-President of India in the year 1965.
This Centre is having projects spread in various states of India like : Maharashtra Gujarat Tamilnadu Madhya Pradesh Orissa Jammu & Kashmir Uttarakhand Bihar
Philosophy of Yusuf Meherally Development of India means Rural development . Right to work is our fundamental right everybody must have an opportunity to work according to capacity and wages according to necessity . Free and compulsory education for all especially for poor people . Availability of community health, medical aid and education to all equally.
Saltpan Workers Saltpan Workers About 10,000 Agariyas E mployed in this industry 80 % of them are landless labors They have been working here for generations They fall under the DE notified Tribe list and are called Agariyas
Activities Although the YMC undertakes a large number of rural development-related activities, health services continue to be its principal activity. Its health-related activities areas follows.
Sunday Clinic Shri Umakant Puthali , one of the founder-members of the YMC took an initiative in Launching Sunday Clinic-cum-Diagnostic Centre at Tara. He arranged weekly visits of the medical practitioners from Mumbai to the Sunday clinic at Tara.
Regular Dispensary The regular dispensary at Tara has been functioning without interruption for thirty-five years for all seven days a week. Today , the dispensary has a staff of 2 full-time resident doctors, 2 full-time trained nurses and 22 health workers . The dispensary provides health services to about fifty patients per day.
Need-Based Services YMC provide immediate medical services to the persons hit by road accidents They give special attention to the TB affected tribals in the area YMC charges nominal fees of five rupees to provide medical and health services
Cottage Hospita l L ocated at that section of the Mumbai-Goa national highway, which is highly accidental prone Setup 30 bed cottage hospital at T ara Provides free ambulance services to the patients Provides free meals to patients and to their relatives at very nominal fees
Mobile Clinic Poor tribals in and around Tara village could not afford to undertake travel Therefore YMC launched mobile clinic activity They charged 10 rupees of nominal fees for “on the spot” medical services
Eye check-up camps YMC sought the co operation of Lions Club in Mumbai to meet health problems YMC extended these Lions Clubs at Vileparle Dhobi Talaw Khar Cuffe Parade

Agriculture Agriculture department of the centre continued its paddy farming and vegetable cultivation operation Dabholkar’s experiment was continued by the centre in a 10 guntha plot
Micro-Washed Development YMC continued to promote Micro-Washed Development programme in the regions of 4 districts Thane Raigad Sindhudurg Ratnagiri
Vermiculture YMC has a Small Dairy Farm Milk produced was continued to be sold locally Cowdung and the urine are used in vermi -compost They has a unit for Earthworms and Bacteria which is useful for composting
Education Yusuf Meherally Highschool w as started by the centre at Tara in 1990 86.66 % passing percentage in SSC examination (2001)
Non-Formal Vocational Centre Non-Formal Vocational Centre for Adivasis started in 1995 Skills like Auto-repairing Electric wiring Maintenance
Women and Tribal Welfare The women welfare activities such as Organising and creating awareness about various women issues Relief to widows and abandoned women Formation of self help groups Arrange loan from the centre and a bank
Post Earthquake activities YMC started the Local Dispensary at Bhadreshwar because it was the need of hour and the people including surrounding 10 villages . For the empowerment of the women and income generation , they started activities of SHG's . Establishment of Non formal education and training programs.

Present activity Hostels Two hostels operational at Bhadreshwar , one each for boys and for the girls . UNICEF Project: New project of UNICEF has been started since March 2019, under this project work started in Mundra , Anjar , Gandhidham and Bachautaluka .
Under this project, t here are school for : Fishermen community Salt workers Children of the labors working in Industries. As of date, we have 11 new schools in this project, providing education to over 400 children.
