Uses of Zentel Tablets

Zentel is used to treat certain infections
caused by worms such as pork tapeworm
and dog tapeworm. Zentel (Albendazole
Tablets) is effective against threadworm or
pinworm, roundworm, whipworm, tapeworm
and hookworm among others. Zentel is
thought to destroy these worms by causing
them to starve. The eggs, larvae and adult
worms are all affected.

Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) have to be
stored at controlled room temperature in
a cool and dry place .i.e. from 20°C to
25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions
permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to
86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines
away from children and pets.

➢ Hydatid Disease: Patients with a weight of 60
kg or more have to be administered a dosage
of 400 mg twice daily, with meals. Patients with
a weight of less than 60 kg have to be
administered a dosage of 15 mg/kg/day given
in divided doses twice daily with meals
(maximum total daily dose 800 mg)
➢The duration of treatment is 28-day cycle
followed by a 14-day Zentel-free interval, for a
total of 3 cycles

➢Neurocysticercosis: Patients with a weight of 60 kg or
greater have to be administered a dosage of 400 mg of
Albendazole tablets twice daily, with meals for a period
of 8 to 30 days.
➢Patients having a weight of less than 60 kg have to
be administered a dosage of 15 mg/kg/day given in
divided doses twice daily with meals (maximum total
daily dose 800 mg) for a period of 8 to 30 days.

Rare fatalities associated with the use of
Albendazole have been reported due to
granulocytopenia or pancytopenia. Zentel
(Albendazole Tablets) has been shown to
cause bone marrow suppression, aplastic
anaemia and agranulocytosis in patients with
and without underlying hepatic dysfunction.
In all patients, blood counts should be
monitored at the beginning of each 28-day
cycle of therapy, and every 2 weeks while on
therapy with Albendazole.

Albendazole should not be used in pregnant women
except in clinical circumstances where no alternative
management is appropriate. Patients must not
become pregnant for at least 1 month following
stopping Albendazole therapy.
Patients being treated for neurocysticercosis must
receive appropriate steroid and anticonvulsant
therapy as required. Oral or intravenous
corticosteroids should be considered to prevent
cerebral hypertensive episodes during the first week
of anti-cysticeral therapy.
Cysticercosis may, in rare cases, involve the retina.
Before starting treatment for neurocysticercosis, the
patient should be examined for the presence of
retinal lesions.

Contraindications
Zentel is contraindicated in patients with a
hypersensitivity to Albendazole, other
benzimidazole derivatives (such as
Mebendazole), or any other component of this
medication.
Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) are
contraindicated during pregnancy or in women
believed to be pregnant. Women of
childbearing age must be strongly advised to
take effective precautions against conception
during and within one month of completion of
treatment with Albendazole Tablets.

➢Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) side effects with
a frequency of 1% or more can include
Abnormal Liver Function Tests, Abdominal Pain,
Nausea/Vomiting, Headache, Dizziness/Vertigo,
Raised Intracranial Pressure, Meningeal Signs,
Reversible Alopecia and Fever. These
symptoms were normally mild and resolved
without treatment.

Significant toxicity and mortality were
shown in animal studies. In the animals,
symptoms were observed in a dose-
response relationship and included
diarrhoea, vomiting, tachycardia and
respiratory distress.
One case of overdosage has been
reported with Albendazole in a patient who
took at least 16 grams over 12 hours. No
untoward effects were reported.

In case of Zentel overdosage,
symptomatic therapy (e.g. gastric lavage
and activated charcoal) and general
supportive measures are recommended.

Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) has been
classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy
Category C.
There are no adequate and well-controlled
studies of Albendazole administration in
pregnant women. Albendazole should be
used during pregnancy only if the potential
benefit justifies the potential risk to the
foetus.
