4/17/2020 4
Since 1890,s zinc oxide based cements are in use
extensively
The most biocompatible among cements
Have obtundant effect on the exposed dentin
Have low strength

Composition
Powder
Zno
Function: Primary reactive ingredient
Zinc acetate (1-5 %)
Function: Accelerator
Liquid
Eugenol
Function: primary reactive ingredient
Olive oil (5-15 %)
Function: To control viscosity

Composition
Powder
Zinc oxide 69% Principal ingredient
White rosin 29.3% To reduce the brittleness of the
set cement
Zinc stearate 01% Accelerator, Plasticisor
Zinc acetate 0.7% Accellarator, improves strength
Magnessium oxide is added in some product to
react with Eugenol in a similar passion as Zinc
oxide
4/17/2020 13

Liquid
Eugenol 85% React with zinc oxide
Olive oil 15% Plasticisor
4/17/2020 14

4/17/2020 15
Setting reaction
ZINC OXIDE + Water → ZINC HYDROXIDE
ZINC HYDROXIDE + EUGENOL → ZINC EUGENOLATE
+ Water

4/17/2020 16
The Chelate formed is an amorphous gel that
tends to crystallize imparting strength to the set
mass
Structure of set cement:
The set cement consists of particles of zinc oxide
embedded in a matrix of zinc eugenolate

4/17/2020 17
The reaction is reversible
The zinc eugenolateis easily hydrolized
Thus cement disintegrates rapidly when
exposed to
oral conditions
Heat and water accelerates the reaction

4/17/2020 18
Properties
Manipulative properties
The setting characteristic are to some extent ideal
An adequate working time
During which very little increase in viscosity occurs,
coupled with setting after placing into the cavity
Sets quickly in oral cavity (higher
temperature and humidity comparatively)

FACTORS AFFECTING SETTING TIME
Particle size:
Smaller zinc oxide particles set faster
Powder to liquid ratio
Higher the ratio, faster the set
Addition of accelerators (Alcohal,Glacial acetic acid and Water
makes the cement set faster)
Cooling the glass slab: Slows the reaction
Addition of Glycol and Glycerine: act as retarders
4/17/2020 19

Mechanical properties
Compressive strength –relatively weak cements
ranges from a low of 3 to 4 MPa up to 50-55 Mpa
Typically 20MPa is for un-reinforced
The ultimate compressive strength is lower than
Zinc phosphate cement
Tensile strength –ranges from 0.32 to 5.3MPa
4/17/2020 20

4/17/2020 21
Biological properties
pH during placement is 7
Can be used in deep cavities without
harming the dental pulp
Unconsumed Eugeolirritant under certain
conditions
Eugenol has an abtundanteffect
(CONT)

Free eugenol is bactericidal
Helps to minimize the effects of
bacterial ingress and production
of exotoxins
Causing pulpal damage as a
consequence of micro leakage
4/17/2020 22

4/17/2020 23
Solubility
Set cement is highest among the cements
(0.4% -wt)
Due to leaching of Eugenol
Leached eugenol replaced by water
Hydrolysis and disintegration of the cement
structure
Not suitable as permanent luting agent

4/17/2020 24
Effects on filling materials
Effect on resin based filling material
Interfere the polymerization process
Softening of the surface of the composite
Discoloration

Thermal properties
Excellent thermal insulating properties
Form an effective barrier under metallic
restoration
The thermal diffusivity is similar to that
of dentine
4/17/2020 25

Adhesion
Not adhesion to the enamel and
dentin
This is one reason why they are not
often used for final cementation of
crowns and bridges
4/17/2020 26

4/17/2020 27
Manipulation
Armamentarium:
Powder, Liquid
Mixing pad
Spatula (use stiff side , not flexible side)

4/17/2020 28

4/17/2020 29

4/17/2020 30
Manipulation
Shake the powder bottle for even
distribution of
Powder / liquid ratio 3 or 4 :1
Incorporate half of the powder into the
liquid and fold it in using the stiff side
of the mixing spatula and applying
heavy force to ensure an even mix
Add the remainder of the powder,
folding in

The final mixture should be Putty-like;
It should be tacky but malleable, and
stiff enough to be properly condensed
when placed.
Roll the mixed cement into a long roll
and cut it into small pieces using the
spatula
4/17/2020 31

4/17/2020 32
Manipulation of Paste / Paste system
Equal lengths of the accelerator and
base pastes are dispensed on a
mixing pad or glass slab
The pastes are colored differently
Mixing should continue until a uniform
color is achieved

4/17/2020 33
