POVERTY Economic Conditions of India A Case Study for PT 3

Poverty  is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. T he national poverty line (in Rs per capita per month) for the year 2011-12 was calculated Rs 816 for rural areas and Rs 1000 for urban areas.

The high population growth rate  is one of the major reasons of poverty in India. This further leads to a high level of illiteracy, poor health care facilities and lack of access to financial resources. The economy of India is not at the same pace as the ever growing population. The higher the population, more the jobs required for each person. T he number of poor living below the poverty line in India according to the 2011 census is 29.5% of the population (363 million).

India is one of the fastest developing economies in the world but also a home to a large number of poverty stricken population. The Reasons for Poverty in India (mainly rural) are: Geographical factors Personal factors Biological factors Economic factors

INTEGRATED RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (IRDP) The major objective of the Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) is to raise families of identified target group below the poverty line by creating sustainable opportunities for self-employment in the rural sector.

SWARNAJAYANTI GRAM SWAROZGAR YOJNA It was started in 1980 with an objective of all round development of rural poor. Self employment was emphasized through IRDP ( Integrated Rural Development Programme) .

PRADHANMANTRI GRAMODAYA YOJANA (PMGY)   It was started in 2000 and its main focus was village level development especially in five areas including primary health, primary education, housing, rural roads and drinking water and nutrition.

NATIONAL FAMILY BENEFIT SCHEME (NFBS) The National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) was introduced by the government throughout the country in August 1995 with the aim to provide immediate aid to those Below Poverty Line families whose lone wage earner expires due to natural or accidental cause.

In the years 2020 - 2021, the onset of the Novel Coronavirus 2019 and its subsequent variants raised further uncertainty regarding the health of the Indian economy. Although this time, the lockdown was not imposed at the national level in the manner it was imposed last year, yet the impact in terms of loss of life and livelihood is severe. The Pandemic has also caused a stir in the business sector of the rural area thus making the people more inclined towards employment crises. The country’s GDP rate has also fallen down to a proximity of 8%.
