2. Penyakit autoimun muncul ketika sistem kekebalan tubuh seseorang menyerang jaringan dan organ tubuhnya sendiri . Respons kekebalan tubuh dapat dimediasi oleh antibodi atau limfosit dan makrofag yang teraktivasi . Penyakit-penyakit ini ditemukan pada 5% hingga 7% dari populasi , dan insiden penyakit ini sangat condong ke arah perempuan . Pada wanita berusia di atas 65 tahun , penyakit autoimun merupakan salah satu dari 10 penyebab utama kematian . INTRODUCTION

3. Etiologi penyakit autoimun pada wanita bersifat multifaktorial . Faktor-faktor tersebut meliputi genetik , lingkungan , dan hormonal . Individu yang mengekspresikan antigen leukosit manusia (HLA) tertentu berisiko tinggi terkena penyakit autoimun . Sebagai contoh , individu yang mengekspresikan HLA B8 dan DR3 memiliki peningkatan risiko terkena penyakit Graves. Karena timbulnya penyakit autoimun terjadi tak lama setelah pubertas dan tepat sebelum menopause, estrogen secara khusus dianggap sebagai salah satu pemicu penyakit autoimun . Berbagai macam penyakit autoimun yang berbeda dapat memengaruhi satu organ ( misalnya , tiroid ) atau beberapa organ ( misalnya , pada lupus eritematosus sistemik ). INTRODUCTION
